Abstract

A portable subscriber access unit includes a wireless transceiver and a processor. The processor controls the transceiver, determines a mobility state of the access unit, and determines a data packet content type. The transceiver transmits the mobility state, receives service rights based on the mobility state, and transmits the data packet on a condition that the content type is allowed by the service rights.

Claims

1. A method for affecting the transmission of content over a wireless communication link, comprising:

determining, at a subscriber access unit, a mobility state of the subscriber access unit;

transmitting the mobility state;

receiving service rights based on the mobility state;

determining a content type of a data packet; and

transmitting the packet on a condition that the content type is allowed by the service rights.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the service rights are determined by a pricing plan.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising displaying, at the subscriber access unit, a representation of the allowed content type to a user.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising transmitting a request for data packets having the content type.

5. The communication method of claim 1, wherein the content type is represented by any one of:

a service port number, a message protocol, and a file type.

6. A portable subscriber access unit, comprising:

a wireless transceiver; and

a processor;

the processor configured to;

control the wireless transceiver;

determine a mobility state of the subscriber access unit; and

determine a content type of a data packet;

the wireless transceiver configured to;

transmit the mobility state;

receive service rights based on the mobility state; and

transmit the packet on a condition that the content type is allowed by the service rights.

7. The subscriber access unit of claim 6, wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to receive service rights determined by a pricing plan.

8. The subscriber access unit of claim 6, further comprising a display configured to display a representation of the allowed content type to a user.

9. The subscriber access unit of claim 6, wherein the processor is configured to issue a request for data packets having the content type.

10. The subscriber access unit of claim 6, wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to transmit a request for data packets having the content type.

11. The subscriber access unit of claim 6, wherein the processor is configured to determine the content type on a condition that the content type is represented by at least one of:

a service port number, a message protocol, and a file type.

12. A method of delivering content to a portable wireless transceiver, comprising:

establishing a wireless communication link with the portable wireless transceiver;

detecting a mobility state of the portable wireless transceiver;

receiving a request for content having a content type to be transmitted over the communication link;

looking up a pricing plan associated with the portable wireless transceiver; and

regulating the transmission of the content over the communication link based on the detected mobility state, the pricing plan, and the content type.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the communication link includes a Code Division Multiple Access based protocol.

14. The method of claim 12, further comprising selecting the mobility state from at least three mobility states.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the mobility states include a stationary state, a pedestrian state, and a mobile state.

16. The method of claim 12, further comprising displaying, on the portable wireless transceiver, a representation of the deliverable content types to a user.

17. The method of claim 12, wherein the regulating comprises assigning at least one additional traffic channel to the wireless communication link.

18. The method of claim 12, wherein the regulating comprises changing a power in the wireless communication link.
