Abstract

A cooling member for a variable speed drive. The variable speed drive has a component that generates heat during operation of the drive and a base. The base has a surface that receives the component, a channel formed in the surface of the base and a passageway formed in the base and receiving fluid therethrough. Fluid flowing through the passageway provides cooling to the component and the base is manufactured from an injection molding process.

Claims

1. A variable speed drive comprising:

a component of the drive that generates heat during operation of the drive;

a cooling member comprising a base, the base having a surface configured to receive the component and further comprising;

a tub formed in the surface of the base;

a passageway formed in the base and configured to receive fluid therethrough; and

wherein a portion of the fluid flowing through the passageway is diverted to the tub, wherein the fluid provides cooling to the component and wherein the base is manufactured from an injection molding process.

2. The variable speed drive of claim 1, comprising a channel formed in the surface of the base, the channel configured to receive a seal to prevent leaking of fluid.

3. The variable speed drive of claim 1, comprising an inlet passageway and an outlet passageway, wherein fluid enters the base through the inlet passageway and exits the base through the outlet passageway.

4. The variable speed drive of claim 3, comprising a tub inlet and a tub outlet, wherein a portion of fluid in inlet passageway is diverted through the tub inlet and flows across the tub and wherein the fluid is discharged to the outlet passageway through the tub outlet.

5. The variable speed drive of claim 1, wherein the cross sectional area of the passageway is sized to satisfy the predetermined fluid flow and fluid pressure drop requirements.

6. The variable speed drive of claim 1, wherein the base is a non-metal material.

7. A cooling member for a variable speed drive comprising:

a base having a surface configured to receive a component, the base further comprising;

a tub formed in the surface of the base;

a passageway formed in the base and configured to receive fluid therethrough; and

wherein a portion of the fluid flowing through the passageway is diverted to the tub, wherein the fluid provides cooling to a component and wherein the base is manufactured from an injection molding process.

8. The cooling member of claim 7, comprising a channel formed in the surface of the base, the channel configured to receive a seal to prevent leaking of fluid.

9. The cooling member of claim 7, comprising an inlet passageway and an outlet passageway, wherein fluid enters the base through the inlet passageway and exits the base through the outlet passageway.

10. The cooling member of claim 9, comprising a tub inlet and a tub outlet, wherein a portion of fluid in inlet passageway is diverted through the tub inlet and flows across the tub and wherein the fluid is discharged to the outlet passageway through the tub outlet.

11. The cooling member of claim 7, wherein the cross sectional area of the passageway is sized to satisfy the predetermined fluid flow and fluid pressure drop requirements.

12. The cooling member of claim 7, wherein the base is a non-metal material.

13. A variable speed drive comprising:

at least two components of the drive that generate heat during operation of the drive;

at least two bases having a surface configured to receive the at least two components, each base of the the at least two bases further comprising;

a tub formed in the surface of the base;

a passageway formed in the base and configured to receive fluid therethrough; and

wherein a portion of the fluid flowing through the passageway is diverted to the tub, wherein the fluid provides cooling to a component, wherein the at least two bases are manufactured from an injection molding process and

wherein at least two bases are connected to form a continuous passageway therethrough.

14. The variable speed drive of claim 13, comprising a channel formed in the surface of the base, the channel configured to receive a seal to prevent leaking of fluid.

15. The variable speed drive of claim 13, comprising an inlet passageway and an outlet passageway, wherein fluid enters the base through the inlet passageway and exits the base through the outlet passageway.

16. The variable speed drive of claim 15, comprising a tub inlet and a tub outlet, wherein a portion of fluid in inlet passageway is diverted through the tub inlet and flows across the tub and wherein the fluid is discharged to the outlet passageway through the tub outlet.

17. The variable speed drive of claim 13, wherein the cross sectional area of the passageway is sized to satisfy the predetermined fluid flow and fluid pressure drop requirements.

18. The variable speed drive of claim 13, wherein the base is a non-metal material.

19. The variable speed drive of claim 13, wherein each base of the at least two bases comprises a through-hole for receiving a fastener and wherein the fastener provides a secure connection between the at least two bases.

20. The variable speed drive of claim 13, wherein each base of the at least two bases comprises a fastener tab and a fastener receptacle, the fastener receptacle configured to receive a fastener tab of an adjacent base, and wherein when a fastener tab is secured in a fastener receptacle a secure connection is made with the adjacent base.
