Abstract

Microstructured optical films, assemblies of films including at least one microstructured optical film, and (e.g. illuminated) display devices including a single microstructured optical film or assembly.

Claims

1. An optical film comprised of a light transmissible polymeric material having a microstructured surface wherein the film is a reflective polarizing film having a single sheet relative gain of at least 2.46.

2. The optical film of claim 1 wherein the microstructured surface comprises a pattern of substantially parallel prisms coupled to a reflective polarizing base layer having a pass axis wherein the prisms are orthogonal to the pass axis of the reflective polarizing film.

3. An assembly comprising the microstructured optical film of claim 1 proximate a second optical film.

4. The assembly of claim 2 wherein the second optical film is a turning film, a polarizing film, a diffuser film, or combination thereof.

10. A device comprising:

(a) a lighting device having a light-emitting surface; and

(b) the optical film of claim 1 disposed proximate the light-emitting surface.

11. The device according to claim 10, wherein the lighting device is a back-lit display device.

12. The device according to claim 10, wherein the lighting device is a back-lit liquid crystal display device.

13. The device according to claim 10, wherein the device is a handheld device, a computer display or a television.

14. The device of claim 10 wherein the device comprises an absorbing polarizer having a pass axis proximate a microstructured optical film comprising a pattern of substantially parallel prisms and the prisms are substantially orthogonal to the pass axis of the absorbing polarizer.

20. A device comprising:

(a) a lighting device having a light-emitting surface;

(b) a reflector behind the light guide; and

the optical film of claim 1 disposed in front of the light-emitting surface.

21. The device of claim 20 wherein the light-emitting surface is an edge-lit light guide.

22. The device of claim 20 wherein the light guide is wedge shaped.

23. The device of claim 20 wherein the reflector is a multi-layer polymeric specular reflector.

5. An assembly comprising a microstructured reflective polarizing film proximate a microstructured substantially non-polarizing optical film and the relative gain of the first and second film is at least 3.33.

6. An assembly of optical films comprising a first optical film having a microstructured surface comprised of a light transmissible polymeric material comprising at least 10 wt-% inorganic nanoparticles wherein the first film is proximate a second optical film.

7. The assembly of claim 6 wherein the second film is selected from a substantially non-polarizing optical film, a microstructured reflective polarizing, an unstructured reflective polarizing film, an absorbing polarizer, a turning film, a diffuser film, and combinations thereof.

15. A device comprising:

(a) a lighting device having a light-emitting surface; and

(b) the assembly of optical films of claim 6 disposed proximate the light-emitting surface.

16. The device according to claim 15, wherein the lighting device is a backlit display device.

17. The device according to claim 15, wherein the lighting device is a backlit liquid crystal display device.

18. The device according to claim 15, wherein the device is a handheld device, a computer display or a television.

19. The device of claim 15 wherein the device comprises an absorbing polarizer having a pass axis proximate a microstructured optical film comprising a pattern of substantially parallel prisms and the prisms are substantially orthogonal to the pass axis of the absorbing polarizer.

8. An optical film comprised of a light transmissible polymeric material having a microstructured surface wherein the film comprises the reaction product of a polymerizable composition comprising one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers and at least 10 wt-% inorganic nanoparticles wherein the polymerizable composition has an absorbance of less than 2.5 for a wavelength of 450 nm and an absorbance of less than 1 for wavelength ranging from about 575 nm to 800 nm.

9. An optical film comprised of a light transmissible polymeric material having a microstructured surface wherein the film comprises the reaction product of a polymerizable composition having a refractive index of at least 1.61 and an absorbance of less than 2.5 for a wavelength of 450 nm and an absorbance of less than 1 for wavelength ranging from about 575 nm to 800 nm.
