Abstract

A waste management system includes a waste transport device, a waste collection device, and an insertion device. The waste transport device includes a collection member with a distal end opening having a first cross-sectional area and a proximal end opening having a second cross-sectional area less than the first cross-sectional area, and a retention cuff disposed about an outer surface of the collection member. The insertion device is positioned about the collection member and retention cuff to retain the collection member and retention cuff in a collapsed configuration.

Claims

1. A waste management system, comprising:

a waste transport device, including;

a collection member with a distal end opening having a first cross-sectional area and a proximal end opening having a second cross-sectional area less than the first cross-sectional area; and

a retention cuff disposed about an outer surface of the collection member;

a waste collection device; and

an insertion device positioned about the collection member and retention cuff, the insertion device retaining the collection member and retention cuff in a collapsed configuration.

2. The system according to claim 1, wherein the insertion device includes an outer sleeve coaxially disposed about an inner sleeve, the outer sleeve including a closed distal end configured to open when a pressure is applied to an inner surface thereof.

3. The system according to claim 2, wherein the inner sleeve and outer sleeve have first and second proximal flanges, each flange including a c-ring, each c-ring separated by a v-cut feeding into a split section configured to separate the sleeve therealong.

4. The system according to claim 2, wherein the outer sleeve includes a tapered head positioned over the collection member and retention cuff.

5. The system according to claim 2, wherein at least one of the inner sleeve and outer sleeve includes a rip strip.

6. The system according to claim 1, wherein the insertion device includes a sleeve having an outer portion folded over an inner portion, the outer portion including first and second flanges separated by a v-cut.

7. The system according to claim 6, wherein the inner portion includes a cuff having a length configured to prevent migration of the inner portion during proximal movement of the outer portion.

8. The system according to claim 6, further comprising an adhesive disposed between the inner portion and the waste transport device.

9. The system according to claim 1, wherein the insertion device includes a plunger disposed about the waste transport device and a scissor device having an upper arm and a lower arm pivotally coupled together.

10. The system according to claim 9, wherein the upper arm and lower arm include respective handles spaced apart in an insertion position.

11. The system according to claim 9, further comprising a sleeve disposed about the upper arm and lower arm.

12. The system according to claim 1, wherein the insertion device includes an upper sleeve attached to a lower sleeve by one or more tear away seams, the upper sleeve made of a material different than a material of the lower sleeve.

13. The system according to claim 12, wherein the lower sleeve includes a handle at the proximal end thereof.

14. The system according to claim 12, wherein the upper sleeve includes a splittable distal tip section.

15. The system according to claim 12, wherein the insertion device includes a spacer indicating a suitable insertion depth.

16. A method of managing the fecal material of a patient, comprising:

providing an insertion device;

inserting a distal section of a waste transport device in a collapsed configuration into a patient'"'"'s rectum using the insertion device, the distal section in an expanded configuration defining a distal end opening having a first cross-sectional area and a proximal end opening having a second cross-sectional area less than the first cross-sectional area, the distal section including an inflatable retention cuff;

removing the insertion device from the waste transport device; and

inflating the retention cuff to a first inflated configuration.

17. The method according to claim 16, wherein the insertion device includes an outer sleeve coaxially disposed about an inner sleeve, the removing step including pressing the waste transport device distal section through a distal end of the outer sleeve.

The method according to claim 16, wherein the insertion device includes a sleeve having an outer portion folded over an inner portion, the outer portion including first and second flanges separated by a v-cut, the removing step including pulling the outer portion in a proximal direction to uncover the distal section of the waste transport device.

19. The method according to claim 16, wherein the insertion device includes a speculum member and a plunger, the plunger retaining the distal section of the waste transport device in the collapsed configuration, the removing step including squeezing opposing handles of the speculum member together and separating the plunger from the waste transport device.

20. The method according to claim 16, wherein the insertion device includes an upper sleeve attached to a lower sleeve by one or more tear away seams, the upper sleeve made of a material different than a material of the lower sleeve, the removing step including shearing back the upper sleeve.
