Abstract

A wireless headset can incorporate a wireless communication controller that not only provides a video link to a host device, but also provides for control and management of a host device and other more devices. In this context, a host device may be any appropriate device that sources audio, video, text, and other information, such as a cell phone, personal computer, laptop, media player, and/or the like.

Claims

1. A wireless video display device comprising:

memory;

a user input device;

a display device;

a wireless communications interface configured to receive content from an external host computing device and transmit control signals generated by the user input device to the external host computing device; and

a communication controller configured to generate a graphical interface to the external host computing device via the display device using the content provided by the external host computing device and to provide control of the external host computing device according to the control signals generated by the user input device transmitted via the wireless communications interface.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the communication controller is further configured to support Windows SideShow.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein the memory stores a virtual network client application for viewing a user display provided by the external host computing device.

4. The device of claim 1 wherein the wireless communications interface is a Bluetooth physical layer with a Bluetooth proxy to implement a packet switching gateway.

6. The device of claim 1 wherein the wireless communications interface is WiFi, WiMax Cellular, Satellite or other wireless network physical layer with an appropriate proxy to implement a packet switching gateway.

7. The device of claim 1 wherein the memory stores a virtual network client application for viewing a user display provided by the external host computing device, the wireless communications interface is a Bluetooth physical layer with a Bluetooth proxy, and virtual network client address assignment and Bluetooth device discovery are coordinated.

The device of claim 1 wherein the memory stores a device driver for each different type of external host computing device with which the wireless communications interface may communicate to transform the content received from each external host computing device to a generic format that may be utilized by the communication controller to display the content in an expected format regardless of which type of external host computing device provides the content.

9. The device of claim 8 wherein the device driver is configured to receive a markup language specification to instruct the communication controller to display content at the monocular display device.

10. The device of claim 1 wherein the communication controller is further configured to provide a graphical interface to multiple external host computing devices.

11. The device of claim 10 wherein the communication controller is further configured to provide graphical interfaces to and control of external host computing devices as typically experienced by a user of each respective external host computing device.

5. The device of claim 5 wherein the packet switching gateway supports multiple Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) connections for multiple applications over a single Bluetooth socket.

12. An method comprising:

receiving over a wireless communications interface content from an external host computing device;

generating a graphical interface to the external host computing device using the content provided by the external host computing device via a display device; and

controlling the external host computing device via the wireless communications interface according to control signals generated by a user input device.

13. The method of claim 12 further comprising supporting Windows SideShow over the wireless connection.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein the graphical user interface is a user display provided by the external host computing device via a virtual network client application.

15. The method of claim 12 wherein the wireless communications interface includes a Bluetooth physical layer with a Bluetooth proxy to implement a packet switching gateway.

16. The method of claim 15 further comprising supporting multiple Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) connections for multiple applications over a single Bluetooth socket via the packet switching gateway.

17. The method of claim 12 wherein the wireless communications interface is WiFi, WiMax, Cellular, Satellite or other wireless network physical layer with an appropriate proxy to implement a packet switching gateway.

The method of claim 12 wherein the graphical user interface is a user display provided by the external host computing device via a virtual network client application and the wireless communications interface includes a Bluetooth physical layer with a Bluetooth proxy, the method further comprising coordinating virtual network client address assignment and Bluetooth device discovery.

19. The method of claim 12 further comprising:

transforming the content received from each external host computing device with which the wireless communications interface may communicate to a generic format; and

utilizing the generic format to display the content by the communication controller in an expected format regardless of which type of external host computing device provides the content.

20. The method of claim 19 further comprising receiving a markup language specification to instruct the communication controller to display content.

21. The method of claim 12 further comprising providing a graphical interface to multiple external host computing devices.

22. The method of claim 21 further comprising providing graphical interfaces to and control of external host computing devices as typically experienced by a user of each respective host computing device.

23. An apparatus comprising:

means for receiving over a wireless communications interface content from an external host computing device; and

means for generating a graphical interface to the external host computing device using the content provided by the external host computing device via a display device supported on a support structure configured to support the display device to the head of a user; and

means for controlling the external host computing device via the wireless communications interface according to control signals generated by a user input device.

24. A system comprising:

an external host computing device; and

a wireless video headset device including memory, a user input device, a display device, a support structure configured to support the display device to the head of a user, a wireless communications interface configured to receive content from the external host computing device and transmit control signals generated by the user input device to the external host computing device, and a communication controller configured to generate a graphical interface to the external host computing device via the monocular display device using the content provided by the external host computing device and to provide control of the external host computing device according to the control signals generated by the user input device transmitted via the wireless communications interface.
