Abstract

A wireless broadcast system that collects content for distribution over a wireless communication network. Multiple independent content streams can be coarsely interleaved by collecting multiple small segments of content of each stream and rearranging them into larger segments, that are interleaved into an aggregate content stream that is broadcast as an identical signal from multiple transmitters. The broadcast signal can also include information about the interleaved content, such as information identifying the occurrence of a later interleaved instance of the same independent content stream in the aggregate content stream, that can be used by a receiver to activate and deactivate portions of a receiver to conserve power.

Claims

1. A method of managing a wireless broadcast communication link, the method comprising:

configuring a receiver to receive an orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signal over the wireless communication link;

receiving a broadcast OFDM signal over the wireless communication link from a transmitter in a selected wireless broadcast network;

analyzing the received broadcast OFDM signal to identify desired portions of the OFDM signal; and

entering an active state of the receiver during the desired portions of the OFDM signal and entering a deactivation state of the receiver during other portions of the OFDM signal.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising scanning the wireless communication link with the receiver during the deactivation state for other wireless broadcast networks to identify adjacent wireless broadcast networks.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising transitioning to receive a broadcast OFDM signal from an adjacent wireless broadcast network when the quality of the received broadcast OFDM signal from the selected wireless broadcast network falls below a predetermined level.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the received broadcast OFDM signal comprises multiple instances of the same broadcast OFDM signal that were transmitted from multiple different transmitters in the selected wireless broadcast network.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the wireless broadcast network is a single frequency network.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the broadcast OFDM signal comprises an aggregate content stream of interleaved content from a plurality of individual content streams.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the broadcast OFDM signal further comprises interleaving information that identifies an occurrence of a later interleaving instance of a same one of the individual content streams in the aggregate content stream.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the later interleaving instance is the next instance of the same individual content stream.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein entering the active state and entering the deactivation state are in response to the interleaving information.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein, in the configuring step, the receiver is repeatedly configured to a different frequency until a broadcast OFDM signal is received over the wireless communication link.

11. A receiver comprising:

a receiver configured to receive an orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signal over a wireless communication link from a transmitter in a selected wireless broadcast network, the OFDM signal comprising a broadcast stream of interleaved content; and

a processor adapted to analyze the received OFDM signal to identify desired portions of the broadcast stream, to enter an active state of the receiver while the desired portions of the broadcast stream are received and to enter a deactivation state of the receiver during other portions of the broadcast stream.

12. The receiver of claim 11, wherein the processor is further adapted to scan the wireless communication link with the receiver during the deactivation state for other wireless broadcast networks to identify adjacent wireless broadcast networks.

13. The receiver of claim 11, further comprising transitioning to receive an OFDM signal from an adjacent wireless broadcast network when the quality of the OFDM signal from the selected wireless broadcast network falls below a predetermined level.

14. The receiver of claim 11, wherein the received OFDM signal comprises multiple instances of the same OFDM signal that were transmitted from multiple different transmitters in the selected wireless broadcast network.

15. The receiver of claim 11, wherein the selected wireless broadcast network is a single frequency network.

16. The receiver of claim 11, wherein the received OFDM signal comprises an aggregate content stream of interleaved content from a plurality of individual content streams.

17. The receiver of claim 16, wherein the OFDM signal further comprises interleaving information that identifies an occurrence of a later interleaving instance of a same one of the individual content streams in the aggregate content stream and wherein the receiver enters the active state and enters the deactivation state in response to the interleaving information.

18. A method of managing a wireless communication link, the method comprising:

entering an initialization state in which a receiver is configured to search for and receive an orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) broadcast signal over the wireless communication link that is transmitted from a selected wireless broadcast network;

transitioning to a persistent state and in which the receiver is synchronized to the OFDM broadcast signal received from the selected wireless broadcast network, individual content streams are identified in the OFDM broadcast signal, and at least one individual content stream is selected; and

transitioning to a time slice state in which an active state of the receiver is entered during time portions of the OFDM broadcast signal that contain the at least one selected individual content stream and a deactivation state of the receiver is entered during other remaining time portions of the OFDM broadcast signal.

The method of claim 18, further comprising transitioning from the time slice state to a scanning state during the deactivation state of the receiver and scanning the wireless communication link with the receiver for other wireless broadcast networks to identify adjacent wireless broadcast networks.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising transitioning back to the time slice state from the scanning state at the start of the next active state of the receiver.

21. The method of claim 18, further comprising transitioning to a handover state and receiving an OFDM broadcast signal from an adjacent wireless broadcast network when the quality of the received OFDM broadcast signal from the selected wireless broadcast network falls below a predetermined level.

22. The method of claim 18, wherein the received OFDM broadcast signal comprises multiple instances of the same OFDM broadcast signal that were transmitted from multiple different transmitters in the selected wireless broadcast network.

23. The method of claim 18, wherein the selected wireless broadcast network comprises a single frequency network.

24. The method of claim 18, wherein, in the initialization state, the receiver is configured to search for and receive an OFDM broadcast signal by repeatedly configuring the receiver to a next frequency of a predetermined frequency list until an OFDM broadcast signal is received by the receiver.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the predetermined frequency list is a recently used list (RUL) of frequencies that were previously used by the receiver within a predetermined amount of time.

26. The method of claim 24, wherein the predetermined frequency list is a highest likelihood list (HLL) of frequencies each of which has a probability of carrying an OFDM broadcast signal which is above a predetermined probability threshold.

27. The method of claim 24, wherein the predetermined frequency list is a preferred roaming list (PRL) of frequencies which is based on the location of the receiver.

28. The method of claim 24, wherein in the initialization state, in the event that the receiver does not receive an OFDM broadcast signal within a first predetermined time period, the receiver enters a power-save state for a second predetermined period of time.

29. The method of claim 24, wherein, in the initialization state, a wireless broadcast network is selected if the received OFDM signal includes a network identification code that matches a predetermined identification code.

30. The method of claim 19, wherein, in the scanning state, the receiver is configured to search for and receive an OFDM broadcast signal by repeatedly configuring the receiver to a next frequency of a predetermined frequency list until an OFDM broadcast signal is received by the receiver.

31. The method of claim 30, wherein the predetermined frequency list is a preferred roaming list (PRL) of frequencies which is based on the location of the receiver.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein the predetermined frequency list is based on information received in the OFDM broadcast signal from the selected wireless broadcast network.

33. The method of claim 30, wherein each frequency on which an OFDM broadcast signal is received is stored in a found networks list (FNL) of frequencies, along with information associated with a wireless broadcast network that transmitted the received OFDM broadcast signal on that frequency.

34. The method of claim 33, further comprising transitioning to a handover state when the quality of the received OFDM broadcast signal from the selected wireless broadcast network falls below a predetermined level, wherein in the handover state the receiver is configured to search for and receive an OFDM broadcast signal by repeatedly configuring the receiver to a next frequency of the found networks list (FNL) until an OFDM broadcast signal is received by the receiver.

35. A method of managing a wireless broadcast communication link, the method comprising:

receiving with a receiver a broadcast signal that includes a plurality of content streams that are coarsely interleaved such that a selected one of the content streams is received as a series of bursts of the selected content steam, each burst being followed by a time interval of the broadcast signal that does not include the selected content stream;

extracting timing information from a burst of the selected content stream indicating a time that a subsequent burst of the selected content stream will occur; and

entering an active state of the receiver when the timing information indicates that a burst of the selected content stream occurs and entering a deactivation state of the receiver when the timing information indicates that a burst of the selected content stream does not occur.

36. The method of claim 35, wherein the timing information comprises an indication of a time period from a burst of the selected content stream to a next burst of the selected content stream.

37. A method of broadcasting data, the method comprising:

receiving a plurality of content streams;

interleaving the plurality of individual content streams such that the plurality of individual content streams are formatted into an aggregate content stream as a series of interleaved bursts, each burst containing a portion of one of the individual content streams; and

including timing information in each burst that indicates a time that a subsequent burst of the same individual content stream is scheduled to occur.

38. One or more computer readable media storing computer executable instructions that, when executed perform a method comprising:

entering an initialization state in which a receiver is configured to search for and receive an orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) broadcast signal that is transmitted over a wireless communication link from a selected wireless broadcast network;

transitioning to a persistent state and in which the receiver is synchronized to the OFDM broadcast signal received from the selected wireless broadcast network, individual content streams are identified in the OFDM broadcast signal, and at least one individual content stream is selected; and

transitioning to a time slice state in which an active state of the receiver is entered during time portions of the OFDM broadcast signal that contain the at least one selected individual content stream and a deactivation state of the receiver is entered during other remaining time portions of the OFDM broadcast signal.
