Abstract

A bone stabilization device which permits a user to drill one or more holes at a desired location and trajectory for insertion of a fastener. The stabilization device may comprise a bone plate, a locking plate, an intermedullary rod, and/or an artificial vertebrae. The stabilization device may comprise a portion of penetrable material, such as polyetheretherketone or other inert material.

Claims

1. A stabilization device comprising at least a portion of penetrable material operable to permit a user to create a hole for insertion of a fastener, while maintaining a sterile environment.

2. The stabilization device of claim 1, wherein said penetrable material is inert and shavings of said penetrable material produced during creation of said hole are not harmful to a patient.

3. The stabilization device of claim 2, wherein said penetrable material is a plastic.

4. The stabilization device of claim 3, wherein said plastic is polyetheretherketone.

5. The stabilization device of claim 1, wherein said stabilization device is selected from a group consisting of a bone plate, a locking plate, an intermedullary rod, and an artificial vertebrae.

6. The stabilization device of claim 1, wherein said fastener is selected from a group consisting of a cap, a bone screw, a lagscrew, a lagwire, a pin, and a wire.

7. The stabilization device of claim 1, wherein said stabilization device further comprises a portion of conventional material selected from a group consisting of titanium, stainless steel, and titanium alloy.

8. The stabilization device of claim 7, wherein said portion of penetrable material is located at the center of said stabilization device and said portion of conventional material is located around the periphery of said stabilization device.

9. The stabilization device of claim 7, wherein said portion of conventional material is located at the center of said stabilization device, and said portion of penetrable material is located around the periphery of said stabilization device

10. The stabilization device of claim 9, wherein said portion of conventional material comprises a substantially rod-like shape.

11. A method for installing a stabilization device comprising the steps of:

positioning said stabilization device at a desired position, wherein said desired position is at least one of on, adjacent to, or within a bone, and wherein said stabilization device comprises at least a portion of penetrable material;

selecting at least one entry point location and an angle of entry for a fastener;

drilling a hole in said stabilization device at said desired location and at said desired angle of entry, while maintaining a sterile environment; and

inserting said fastener into said hole to couple said stabilization device to a bone.

12. The method for installing a stabilization device according to claim 11, wherein said stabilization device comprises at least one pre-existing hole.

13. The method for installing a stabilization device according to claim 12, further comprising the step of securing said stabilization device to a bone by inserting a fastener into said pre-existing hole.

14. The method for installing a stabilization device according to claim 11, wherein said penetrable material is a plastic.

15. The method for installing a stabilization device according to claim 14, wherein said plastic is polyetheretherketone.

16. The method for installing a stabilization device according to claim 11, wherein said stabilization device is selected from a group consisting of a bone plate, a locking plate, an intermedullary rod, and an artificial vertebrae.

17. The method for installing a stabilization device according to claim 11, wherein said fastener is selected from a group consisting of a cap, a bone screw, a lagscrew, a lagwire, a pin, and a wire.

18. The method for installing a stabilization device according to claim 11, wherein said stabilization device further comprises a portion of conventional material selected from a group consisting of titanium, stainless steel, and titanium alloy.

19. The method for installing a stabilization device according to claim 11, further comprising the step of selecting a second entry point location and a second angle of entry for a second fastener.

20. The method for installing a stabilization device according to claim 19, further comprising the step of creating a second hole in said stabilization device at said second desired location and at said second desired angle of entry.

21. The method for installing a stabilization device according to claim 19, further comprising the step of inserting a second fastener into said second hole to couple said stabilization device to a bone.

22. The method for installing a stabilization device according to claim 20, wherein said second hole comprises an angle of entry different from said first hole.
