Abstract

Organic light emitting devices are disclosed which are comprised of a heterostructure for producing electroluminescence wherein the heterostructure is comprised of an emissive layer containing a phosphorescent dopant compound. For example, the phosphorescent dopant compound may be comprised of platinum octaethylporphine (PtOEP), which is a compound having the chemical structure with the formula:

Claims

1. An organic light emitting device comprising:

an anode, a hole transporting layer, an emissive layer, an electron transporting layer and a cathode, wherein;

the emissive layer is the electron transporting layer, the emissive layer is the hole transporting layer, or the emissive layer is a separate charge-carrying layer between the electron transporting layer and the hole transporting layer;

the emissive layer comprises a charge-carrying material and a phosphorescent material;

the phosphorescent material is present in the emissive layer at a lower concentration than the charge-carrying material; and

wherein the phosphorescent material emits phosphorescent radiation from a triplet molecular excited state when a voltage is applied across the device.

2. The organic light emitting device of claim 1, wherein the emissive layer is the hole transporting layer.

3. The organic light emitting device of claim 1, wherein the emissive layer is the electron transporting layer.

4. The organic light emitting device of claim 1, wherein the emissive layer is a separate charge-carrying layer between the electron transporting layer and the hole transporting layer.

5. The organic light emitting device of claim 1, wherein the phosphorescent material has a phosphorescent lifetime of no longer than 10 microseconds.

6. The organic light emitting device of claim 1, wherein the phosphorescent material emits phosphorescent radiation from a triplet molecular excited state when a voltage is applied across the device at room temperature.

7. The organic light emitting device of claim 6, wherein the phosphorescent material is capable of a photoluminescent quantum yield greater than 50% in the solid state.

8. The organic light emitting device of claim 1, wherein the device further comprises a hole injecting enhancement layer between the anode and the hole transporting layer.

9. The organic light emitting device of claim 1, wherein the device further comprises an electron injecting interface layer between the cathode and the electron transporting layer.

10. The organic light emitting device of claim 1, wherein the phosphorescent material has the chemical structure of formula I:

wherein X is C;

R₈, R₉, and R₁₀ are each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl and substituted aryl;

R₉ and R₁₀ may be combined together to form a fused ring;

M₁ is Pt;

a is 1;

b is 0; and

c is 1.

11. The organic light emitting device of claim 10, wherein the phosphorescent material has the chemical structure:

wherein Et is an ethyl group.

12. The organic light emitting device of claim 1, wherein the device is incorporated into an optoelectronic device.

13. The organic light emitting device of claim 12, wherein the optoelectronic device is incorporated into one of a vehicle, a computer, a television, a printer, a large area wall, a theater or stadium screen, a billboard, or a sign.

14. The organic light emitting device of claim 3, wherein the device is incorporated into an optoelectronic device.

15. The organic light emitting device of claim 14, wherein the optoelectronic device is incorporated into one of a vehicle, a computer, a television, a printer, a large area wall, a theater or stadium screen, a billboard, or a sign.

16. The organic light emitting device of claim 5, wherein the device is incorporated into an optoelectronic device.

17. The organic light emitting device of claim 16, wherein the optoelectronic device is incorporated into one of a vehicle, a computer, a television, a printer, a large area wall, a theater or stadium screen, a billboard, or a sign.

18. The organic light emitting device of claim 7, wherein the device is incorporated into an optoelectronic device.

19. The organic light emitting device of claim 18, wherein the optoelectronic device is incorporated into one of a vehicle, a computer, a television, a printer, a large area wall, a theater or stadium screen, a billboard, or a sign.
