Abstract

A method of commanding a vehicle to perform a task. The method includes the steps of establishing a first wireless connection between a first wireless device and a vehicle communications system creating a data transfer network between the first wireless device and the vehicle communications system, transmitting a command from the first wireless device to the vehicle communications system via the data transfer network, receiving the command at the vehicle communications system, and instructing, by the vehicle communications system, an appropriate vehicle system to perform a task based upon the command.

Claims

1. A method of commanding a vehicle to perform a task, the method comprising the steps of:

establishing a first wireless connection between a first wireless device and a vehicle communications system creating a data transfer network between the first wireless device and the vehicle communications system;

transmitting a command from the first wireless device to the vehicle communications system via the data transfer network;

receiving the command at the vehicle communications system; and

instructing, by the vehicle communications system, an appropriate vehicle system to perform a task based upon the command.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the command is input into the first wireless device by a user of the first wireless device.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

displaying a menu of possible commands on a display of the first wireless device, and

wherein the transmitted command comprises a user selected command from the menu.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein a second wireless device is connected to the first wireless device via a second wireless connection.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the second wireless connection is a cellular network connection.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising the step of initially transmitting a command from the second wireless device to the first wireless device.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the vehicle communications system is electrically connected to at least one or more vehicle electrical systems in the vehicle.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the task includes at least one of starting the vehicle, unlocking the vehicle, locking the vehicle, opening a window, closing a window, operating a horn, turning on an alarm, and turning off an alarm.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the first wireless connection is a personal area network connection.

10. The method of claim 8, wherein the first wireless device is a personal area network enabled wireless device.

11. A method of commanding a vehicle to perform a task, the method comprising the steps of:

establishing a first wireless connection between a first wireless device and a vehicle communications system creating a data transfer network between the first wireless device and the vehicle communications system;

establishing a second wireless connection between a second wireless device and the first wireless device;

transmitting a command from the second wireless device to the first wireless device;

transmitting the command from the first wireless device to the vehicle communications system via the data transfer network;

receiving the command at the vehicle communications system; and

instructing, by the vehicle communications system, an appropriate vehicle system to perform a task based upon the command.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the command is input into the second wireless device by a user of the second wireless device.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the user selects the command form a list of commands stored in the second wireless device.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the second wireless connection is a cellular network connection.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein the first wireless connection is a personal area network connection.

17. The method of claim 11, wherein the task includes at least one of starting the vehicle, unlocking the vehicle, locking the vehicle, opening a window, closing a window, operating a horn, turning on an alarm, and turning off an alarm.

16. The method of claim 16, wherein the first wireless device is a personal area network enabled wireless device.
