Abstract

Mechanisms are provided for replacing default advertisement streams in a media stream with replacement advertisement streams. User profile information is obtained for a particular user and/or device. A default advertisement stream is identified and replaced with advertisement streams selected using the user profile information. Timestamp information and sequence number information is maintained to allow uninterrupted delivery of the modified media stream while customizing media streams for particular users.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

providing a media stream including a plurality of packets to a device;

obtaining user profile information associated with the device;

replacing a default advertisement stream in the media stream with a replacement advertisement stream obtaining using the user profile information;

maintaining sequence number information for the media stream and replacing sequence number information for packets following the replacement advertisement stream.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the replacement advertisement stream includes a first number of packets.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the default advertisement stream includes a second number of packets different from the first number.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the replacement advertisement stream is selected based at least partially on a bit rate match with the removal sequence.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the default advertisement stream is identified using a marker flag.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein the replacement advertisement stream is selected based at least partially on a timestamp information match with the default advertisement stream.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the media stream is a Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) stream.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the content server is connected over a network to a controller operable to establish a session with the device using a Real-Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP).

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of packets hold I-frames, P-frames, and B-frames.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the content server includes the replacement advertisement stream without decoding payload data in the plurality of packets.

11. A system, comprising:

an interface operable to provide a media stream including a plurality of packets to a device;

a processor operable to obtain user profile information associated with the device, replace a default advertisement stream in the media stream with a replacement advertisement stream obtaining using the user profile information, maintain sequence number information for the media stream, and replace sequence number information for packets following the replacement advertisement stream.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the replacement advertisement stream includes a first number of packets.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the default advertisement stream includes a second number of packets different from the first number.

14. The system of claim 11, wherein the replacement advertisement stream is selected based at least partially on a bit rate match with the removal sequence.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the default advertisement stream is identified using a marker flag.

16. The system of claim 14, wherein the replacement advertisement stream is selected based at least partially on a timestamp information match with the default advertisement stream.

17. The system of claim 11, wherein the media stream is a Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) stream.

18. The system of claim 11, wherein the content server is connected over a network to a controller operable to establish a session with the device using a Real-Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP).

19. The system of claim 11, wherein the plurality of packets hold I-frames, P-frames, and B-frames.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the content server includes the replacement advertisement stream without decoding payload data in the plurality of packets.

21. An apparatus, comprising:

means for providing a media stream including a plurality of packets to a device;

means for obtaining user profile information associated with the device;

means for replacing a default advertisement stream in the media stream with a replacement advertisement stream obtaining using the user profile information;

means for maintaining sequence number information for the media stream and replacing sequence number information for packets following the replacement advertisement stream.
