Abstract
In a display system, a color gamut of the displayed images is extended by adding one or more primary colors lying outside a tristimulus color space triangle to a Red, Green, Blue (RGB) system, modulating light emitted by both light sources lying inside the tristimulus color space triangle and light sources lying outside the tristimulus color space triangle, and adding a non-tristimulus vertex to construct an extended-gamut polygon. The display system adds one or more primary colors to the RGB system, which lie outside the tristimulus color space triangle but within a CIE (International Commission on Illumination) color space.

15. A method for extending a color gamut comprising:
-
adding one or more primary colors lying outside a tristimulus color space triangle to a Red, Green, Blue (RGB) system; modulating light emitted by both light sources lying inside said tristimulus color space triangle and light sources lying outside said tristimulus color space triangle; and adding a non-tristimulus vertex to construct an extended-gamut polygon. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23)

24. A method for extending a color gamut comprising:
-
adding one or more primary colors lying outside a tristimulus color space triangle to a Red, Green, Blue (RGB) system; driving both light sources of primary colors lying inside said tristimulus color space triangle and light sources of said one or more primary colors lying outside said tristimulus color space triangle to provide light to a plurality of pixels; modulating light emitted by both light sources lying inside said tristimulus color space triangle and light sources lying outside said tristimulus color space triangle; and adding a non-tristimulus vertex to construct an extended-gamut polygon. - View Dependent Claims (25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32)

33. A display comprising:
-
a plurality of pixels on said display; and a plurality of drive lamps for driving light sources to provide light to said plurality of pixels, wherein said plurality of drive lamps are driven to cause each of said plurality of pixels to generate a color palette including primary colors lying inside a tristimulus color space triangle and one or more primary colors lying outside said tristimulus color space triangle, wherein said color palette is expanded by modulating light emitted by both light sources lying inside said tristimulus color space triangle and light sources lying outside said tristimulus color space triangle, wherein a non-tristimulus vertex is added to construct an extended-gamut polygon. - View Dependent Claims (34)
