Abstract

There is provided a method for enabling a user equipment (UE) to transition between a non-discontinuous reception (Non-DRX) level and at least one discontinuous reception (DRX) level. The UE in a DRX level wakes up periodically to monitor a scheduling channel. The method includes receiving a DRX indicator in a Non-DRX level with continuously monitoring the scheduling channel and transitioning from the Non-DRX level to a DRX level indicated by the DRX indicator. The UE can transition between multiple DRX levels by an explicit command/signaling.

Claims

1. A method of transitioning a reception level to monitor a scheduling channel in a wireless communication system, carried in a user equipment (UE), comprising:

monitoring a scheduling channel in a first discontinuous reception (DRX) level;

starting a first timer when the scheduling channel indicates a transmission or reception of data by a base station;

monitoring the scheduling channel continuously while the first timer is running; and

transitioning to the first DRX level or a second DRX level when the first timer is expired.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein transitioning to the first DRX level or the second DRX level when the DRX indicator is received is configured by a Radio Resource Control (RRC) message.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

starting a second timer when transitioning to the second DRX level.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

transitioning to the first DRX level when the second timer is expired.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein a DRX period of the first DRX level is different from a DRX period of the second DRX level.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the DRX period of the first DRX level and the DRX period of the second DRX level are configured by a RRC message.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein the DRX period of the first DRX level is longer than the DRX period of the second DRX level.

8. A user equipment (UE) comprising a processor configured to:

monitor a scheduling channel in a first DRX level;

start a first timer when the scheduling channel indicates a transmission or reception of data by a base station;

monitor the scheduling channel continuously while the first timer is running; and

transition to the first DRX level or a second DRX level when the first timer is expired.

9. The UE of claim 8, wherein transitioning to the first DRX level or the second DRX level when the DRX indicator is received is configured by a Radio Resource Control (RRC) message.

10. The UE of claim 8, wherein the processor is further configured to:

start a second timer when transitioning to the second DRX level.

11. The UE of claim 10, wherein the processor is further configured to:

transition to the first DRX level when the second timer is expired.

12. The UE of claim 8, wherein a DRX period of the first DRX level is different from a DRX period of the second DRX level.

13. The UE of claim 12, wherein the DRX period of the first DRX level and the DRX period of the second DRX level are configured by a RRC message.

14. The UE of claim 12, wherein the DRX period of the first DRX level is longer than the DRX period of the second DRX level.
