Method And Apparatus For Mapping A Structure
First Claim
1. A system for mapping data and positioning an instrument in a three dimensional volume, comprising:
- a first drive patch and a second drive patch;
a driving unit interconnected with the first and the second drive patches operable to generate a voltage between the first and the second drive patches;
an instrument having an inflatable member and an electrode positioned adjacent the inflatable member, wherein the electrode is operable to both move relative to the first drive patch and the second drive patch and sense the voltage generated by the driving unit;
a processor operable to execute instructions to determine a relative position of the electrode as the electrode is moved relative to the first drive patch and the second drive patch; and
a display device operable to display an icon representing a virtual representation of the position.

Abstract
An area of a patient can be mapped with a system operable to identify a plurality of locations and save a plurality of locations of a mapping instrument. The mapping instrument can include one or more electrodes that can sense a voltage that can be correlated to a three dimensional location of the electrode at the time of the sensing or measurement. Therefore, a map of an area or volume can be determined based upon the sensing of the plurality of points without the use of an imaging device. An implantable medical device can then be navigated relative to the mapping data.
