Abstract

A tool for use during surgery includes a housing including a distal end and a proximal end, a motor disposed within the housing, and an output shaft having a proximal end connected to the motor and a distal end extending from the distal end of the housing. The tool further includes a battery pack contained within the housing, and a passage extending from the distal end to the proximal end of the housing through the output shaft and the battery pack, wherein the passage is defined by an interior surface of the output shaft and a channel through the battery.

Claims

1. A tool for use during surgery comprising:

a housing comprising a distal end and a proximal end,

a motor disposed within the housing;

an output shaft having a proximal end connected to the motor and a distal end;

a battery pack contained within the housing; and

a passage extending from the distal end to the proximal end of the housing through the output shaft and the battery pack, wherein the passage is defined by an interior surface of the output shaft and a channel through the battery.

2. The tool of claim 1, further comprising a sealed compartment, wherein the motor is disposed within the sealed compartment.

3. The tool of claim 1, wherein the passage has a generally circular cross-sectional contour including a diameter of at least about 1 mm.

4. The tool of claim 1, wherein the passage has a length of at least about 10 cm.

5. The tool of claim 1, wherein the passage further comprises an electrically insulating liner extending for a portion of the passage.

6. The tool of claim 1, further comprising a ratcheting mechanism connected to the output shaft.

The tool of claim 6, further comprising a switch connected to the housing and electrically connected to the motor, wherein the switch comprises a forward position and a reverse position, wherein the forward position is configured to actuate the motor in a forward direction and the reverse position is configured to actuate the motor in a reverse direction that is a direction opposite of the forward direction.

8. The tool of claim 7, further comprising an anti-backdrive mechanism connected to the output shaft and the housing.

9. The tool of claim 8, wherein the ratchet mechanism is decoupled from the output shaft in the reverse position.

10. The tool of claim 1, wherein the battery pack comprises multiple power cells.

36. The tool of claim 1, further comprising:

a trigger operable with a hand of an operator; and

a failsafe switch connected to the housing,

wherein the failsafe switch is simultaneously operable with the trigger with the hand of the operator, and wherein the failsafe switch prevents operation of the motor without the hand of the operator.

37. The tool of claim 36, wherein the failsafe switch is disposed on the surface of the trigger and configured to detect the presence of a user'"'"'s finger operating the trigger.

38. The tool of claim 37, wherein the failsafe switch includes a capacitive member configured to detect the presence of a user at the surface of the failsafe switch.

39. The tool of claim 36, wherein the failsafe switch and the trigger are distinct.

40. The article of claim 39, wherein the trigger is decoupled from the motor and the motor is in an off position when the failsafe switch is disengaged.

41. A surgical tool for implanting devices within the body comprising:

an autoclavable housing comprising a distal end, a proximal end, and a handle extending from the housing between the distal end and the proximal end at an angle to a longitudinal axis of the housing, wherein the housing comprising a sealed portion containing a motor;

an output shaft extending along the longitudinal axis of the housing and connected to the motor; and

a ratcheting mechanism connected to the output shaft.

42. The tool of claim 41, wherein the sealed portion comprises a first gasket abutting a portion of the housing and a second gasket abutting a second portion of the housing.

43. A surgical tool for implanting devices within the body comprising:

a housing comprising a distal end, a proximal end opposite of the distal end, and a housing length defined as the distance between the proximal end and the distal end;

a motor;

an output shaft having a proximal end and a distal end opposite the proximal end, wherein the proximal end is connected to the motor;

a chuck having a distal end and a proximal end opposite the distal end connected to the distal end of the output shaft; and

a handle connected to the housing and extending at an angle from the housing between the distal end and the proximal end, the handle having a front surface including a trigger and a back surface opposite the front surface, wherein a cradle distance defined as a distance between the back surface and the proximal end of the chuck is not greater than about 50% of the housing length.

44. The tool of claim 43, wherein the cradle distance is within a range between about 30% and about 45% of the length of the housing.

45. The tool of claim 43, wherein the handle is closer to the distal end of the housing than the proximal end of the housing.

46. A tool for use during surgery comprising:

a housing comprising a distal end and a proximal end and a motor disposed within the housing;

a battery pack contained within the housing;

a passage extending from the distal end to the proximal end of the housing through the output shaft and the battery pack, wherein the passage is defined by an interior surface of the output shaft and a channel through the battery; and

a navigation-enabling member connected to the housing.

47. The tool of claim 46, wherein the navigation-enabling member comprises a passive component.

48. The tool of claim 46, wherein the navigation-enabling member comprises an active component.

49. The tool of claim 48, wherein the active component comprises a radiation emitting component.

50. The tool of claim 46, wherein the navigation-enabling member is rotatable between a first position and a second position around a central axis defined by a longitudinal axis of the housing.

51. The tool of claim 50, wherein the navigation-enabling member is further translated laterally in a direction parallel to the central axis of the housing between the first position and the second position.

52. The tool of claim 46, wherein the navigation-enabling member comprises a base connected to the housing and fixed in position relative to the housing and a moveable portion configured to engage the base and comprising one of an active component and a passive component.

53. The tool of claim 52, wherein the base comprises a track and the moveable portion is engaged within the track and configured to be moved between a first position and a second position along a path defined by the track.

54. A tool for use during surgery comprising:

a housing comprising a distal end and a proximal end and a motor disposed within the housing;

a battery pack contained within the housing;

a passage extending from the distal end to the proximal end of the housing through the output shaft and the battery pack, wherein the passage is defined by an interior surface of the output shaft and a channel through the battery; and

a neural integrity monitoring (NIM) member connected to the housing.

55. The tool of claim 54, further comprising a handle extending from the housing at a substantially orthogonal angle as defined between a longitudinal axis of the handle relative to a longitudinal axis of the housing.

56. The tool of claim 54, wherein the housing comprises a port selectable between an open position and a closed position, wherein in the open position the port is configured to engage the coupling.

57. The tool of claim 54, wherein the NIM member comprises an active assembly connected to the housing.

58. The tool of claim 57, further comprising a bit having a proximal end connected to the distal end of the output shaft and a distal end, wherein the bit comprises an electrically conductive portion electrically connected to the active assembly and configured to transmit electrical signals.

59. The tool of claim 58, wherein the active assembly comprises a brush having an electrically conductive bristle electrically connected to the conductive portion of the bit.

60. The tool of claim 58, wherein the active assembly comprises a snap-fit coupling configured to electrically connect to the conductive portion of the bit.

61. The tool of claim 57, wherein the active assembly is disposed within the passage.

62. The tool of claim 57, wherein the active assembly comprises a port configured to connect to an electrically conductive portion of a bit.

63. The tool of claim 57, wherein the active assembly transmits a wireless signal to a remote monitoring system.
