Abstract

A sound wave generator that includes a carbon nanotube structure. The carbon nanotube structure produces sound by means of the thermoacoustic effect.

Claims

1. An apparatus, the apparatus comprising:

a signal device;

a medium;

a sound wave generator, the sound wave generator comprises a carbon nanotube structure; and

the signal device transmits signals to the carbon nanotube structure;

wherein the carbon nanotube structure has a heat capacity per unit area less than 2×

4</sup> J/cm²·

K;

the carbon nanotube structure converts the signals into heat; and

, the heat is transferred to the medium causing a thermoacoustic effect.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the heat capacity per unit area of the carbon nanotube structure is less than or equal to 1.7×

10<sup>−

6</sup> J/cm²·

K.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the frequency response range of the sound wave generator ranges from about 1 Hz to about 100 KHz.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein total harmonic distortion of the sound wave generator is less than 3% in a frequency response range from about 500 Hz to 40 KHz.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the sound pressure level of the sound generated by the sound wave generator is greater than 50 dB.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the carbon nanotube structure has a substantially planar structure, and a thickness of the carbon nanotube structure ranges from about 0.5 nanometers to about 1 millimeter.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the carbon nanotube structure comprises a plurality of carbon nanotubes, and the carbon nanotubes are combined by van der Waals attractive force therebetween.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the carbon nanotubes are orderly arranged in the carbon nanotube structure.

9. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the carbon nanotubes are disorderly arranged in the carbon nanotube structure.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising at least two electrodes, the at least two electrodes are electrically connected to the carbon nanotube structure.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the at least two electrodes are electrically connected the signal device.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein any two adjacent electrodes are electrically connected to different terminals of the signal device.

13. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the at least two electrodes have a shape selected from a group consisting of lamella, rod, film, wire and block.

14. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein a material of the at least two electrodes is selected from a group consisting of metals, conductive adhesives, carbon nanotubes, and indium tin oxides.

15. The apparatus of claim 10, further comprising a conductive adhesive layer located between each electrode and the carbon nanotube structure.

16. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the signal device is selected from a group consisting of electrical signal device, electromagnetic wave signal device and combinations thereof.

17. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the signals from the signal device are selected from a group consisting of electromagnetic waves, pulsating direct current, alternating electrical current and combinations thereof.

18. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein there is a variation in the signals, and the variation of the signals is selected from the group consisting of digital signals, changes in intensity, changes in duration, changes in cycle, and combinations thereof.

19. An apparatus, the apparatus comprising:

a signal device; and

a sound wave generator, the sound wave generator comprises of a carbon nanotube structure;

wherein the carbon nanotube structure is in communication with the signal device and produces sound waves in response to signals from the signal device.

20. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein the sound wave generator heats a medium adjacent to the carbon nanotube structure to produce the sound waves.

21. An apparatus, the apparatus comprising:

a sound wave generator, the sound wave generator comprises a carbon nanotube structure;

the sound wave generator produces sound waves by a thermoacoustic effect.

22. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the carbon nanotube structure produces heat in response to receiving a signal and heats a medium so that the sound waves are produced in the medium.

23. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising a signal and the signal comprises a variation, wherein the variation is selected from the group consisting of digital signals, changes in intensity, changes in duration, changes in cycle, and combinations thereof.

24. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising a signal, wherein the signal is selected from a group consisting of electromagnetic waves, alternating electrical current, pulsating direct current and combinations thereof.

25. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the carbon nanotube structure has a heat capacity per unit area less than 2×

26. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising at least two electrodes.

27. A sound producing system, the sound producing system comprises of:

a signal device;

a carbon nanotube structure; and

a medium in contact with the carbon nanotube structure;

wherein the carbon nanotube structure is capable of receiving a signal from the signal device;

the carbon nanotube structure converts the signal to heat and transfers the heat to the medium; and

the medium creates sound waves by thermal expansion.

28. The sound producing system of claim 27, wherein the carbon nanotube structure comprises a plurality of carbon nanotubes, and the carbon nanotubes are combined by van der Waals attractive force therebetween.

30. The sound producing system of claim 27, wherein the carbon nanotube structure has a heat capacity per unit area less than 2×

29. The sound producing system 27, wherein the signal comprises of a variation, and the variation is selected from the group consisting of digital signal, changes in intensity, changes in duration, changes in cycle, and combinations thereof.

31. A sound producing apparatus, the sound producing apparatus comprising:

a carbon nanotube structure;

wherein the carbon nanotube structure produces sound waves in a medium by causing a thermoacoustic effect.

32. The sound producing apparatus of claim 31, wherein the carbon nanotube structure comprises of carbon nanotubes and has a heat capacity per unit area that is less than or equal to 2×

33. A sound producing apparatus, the sound producing apparatus comprising:

a sound wave generator, the sound wave generator comprising a carbon nanotube structure;

wherein the carbon nanotube structure produces sound waves without any significant vibration.

34. The sound producing apparatus of claim 33, wherein the carbon nanotube structure produces sound waves by a thermoacoustic effect.

35. The sound producing apparatus of claim 33, wherein the carbon nanotube structure has a heat capacity per unit area less than 2×

36. A sound producing apparatus, the sound producing apparatus comprising:

a carbon nanotube structure that is porous, wherein the carbon nanotube structure produces sound waves.

37. The sound producing apparatus of claim 36, wherein the carbon nanotube structure produces sound waves by heating a medium.

38. A sound producing apparatus, the sound producing apparatus comprising:

a sound wave generator;

the sound wave generator comprises of a carbon nanotube structure and produces sound while moving, flexing, folding or a combination thereof;

wherein the moving, flexing, folding or a combination thereof, is completely independent of the sound produced.

39. The sound producing apparatus of claim 38, wherein the carbon nanotube structure produces sound by heating a medium while moving, flexing, folding or a combination thereof.

40. A sound producing device, the sound producing device comprising:

a sound wave generator;

the sound wave generator comprises of a carbon nanotube structure, the carbon nanotube structure comprises of one or more drawn carbon films;

the carbon nanotube structure is capable of producing sound while being stretched along a direction or returned to the carbon nanotube structure'"'"'s original non-stretched size;

wherein the stretching or returning to the carbon nanotube structure'"'"'s original non-stretched size is completely independent of and has minimal effect on the sound produced.

41. The sound producing device of claim 40, wherein the carbon nanotube structure can be stretched between up to 300% of the carbon nanotube structure'"'"'s original non-stretched size.

42. An apparatus, the apparatus comprising:

a sound wave generator capable of producing sound waves, the sound wave generator comprises a carbon nanotube structure;

wherein the carbon nanotube structure produces sound waves by repeated heating of a medium.

43. The apparatus of claim 42, further comprising a signal device that sends a signal to the sound wave generator, wherein there is a variation in the signal, and the variation of the signal is selected from the group consisting of digital signal, changes in intensity, changes in duration, changes in cycle, and combinations thereof.

44. An apparatus, the apparatus comprising:

a sound wave generator, the sound wave generator comprises a carbon nanotube structure;

wherein the carbon nanotube structure has transparency in the range of about 70% to about 95% and produces sound waves by a thermoacoustic effect.

45. An apparatus, the apparatus comprising:

a sound wave generator, the sound wave generator comprises a carbon nanotube structure;

wherein the carbon nanotube structure is porous and initiates the production of sound waves.

46. A sound producing apparatus, the sound producing apparatus comprising:

a carbon nanotube structure, wherein the carbon nanotube structure produces of sound waves that are audible to humans.
