Abstract

Described here are patches, systems, and methods for measuring glucose. In general, the patches comprise a microfluidic collection layer and a detector, and the systems comprise a patch and a measurement device. Some methods for measuring glucose comprise cleaning the skin surface, collecting sweat from the skin surface using a microfluidic collection device, and measuring the collected glucose. Other methods comprise cleaning the skin surface, collecting sweat in a patch comprising a microfludic collection layer, and measuring glucose collected in the patch. Still other methods comprise cleaning the skin surface, collecting a first sweat sample from the skin surface in a patch comprising a microfludic collection layer and a detector layer, transferring the first sweat sample from the collection layer to the detector layer, measuring glucose in the first sweat sample, and repeating the collection, transferring, and measuring steps at least once.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

cleaning a skin surface with a glucose solvent; and

collecting sweat from the skin surface using a microfluidic collection device.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising measuring the concentration of glucose in the collected sweat.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein measuring the concentration of glucose in the collected sweat comprises measuring a nanogram quantity of glucose.

4. The method of claim 2, further comprising repeating the steps of collecting the sweat and measuring the concentration of glucose in the collected sweat.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the method comprises collecting less than about 20 μ

l of sweat.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the method comprises collecting less than about 10 μ

l of sweat.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the method comprises collecting less than about 5 μ

l of sweat.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the method comprises collecting less than about 1 μ

l of sweat.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the method comprises collecting less than about 0.5 μ

l of sweat.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the microfluidic collection device comprises a fixed volume reservoir, and wherein the method comprises collecting a predetermined volume of sweat in the fixed volume reservoir.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising using electrical conductance to determine when the fixed volume reservoir is filled with sweat.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the microfluidic collection device comprises a detector comprising at least two electrodes, and wherein the method further comprises activating the at least two electrodes with a measurement device to detect glucose in the collected sweat.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the microfluidic collection device comprises a patch.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the microfluidic collection device comprises a plurality of microfluidic channels, and wherein the method comprises collecting the sweat into the plurality of microfluidic channels.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the microfluidic channels are open to the skin surface.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein the microfluidic collection device comprises a single microfluidic channel, and wherein the method comprises collecting the sweat into the single microfluidic channel.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the single microfluidic channel is open to the skin surface.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein the microfluidic collection device comprises a patch comprising a sweat-permeable membrane.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the sweat-permeable membrane is configured to act as a barrier to epidermal contaminants and glucose brought to a skin surface via diffusion when the patch is in contact with the skin surface.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein the sweat-permeable membrane comprises a material that is generally occlusive, but that allows sweat to pass therethrough.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein the microfluidic collection device comprises a microfluidic collection layer containing a buffer, and wherein the method comprises collecting sweat in the microfluidic collection layer.

22. The method of claim 1, wherein the microfluidic collection device comprises a microfluidic collection layer, and wherein the method further comprising pumping a buffer into the microfluidic collection layer.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein pumping the buffer into the microfluidic collection layer is performed after collecting the sweat.

24. The method of claim 1, wherein cleaning the skin surface with the glucose solvent comprises wiping the skin surface with a wipe containing the glucose solvent.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the wipe further comprises a marker, and wherein the concentration of glucose in the collected sweat is measured using a measurement device that indicates whether the marker is present on the skin surface.

26. The method of claim 1, wherein the glucose solvent comprises a polar solvent.

27. The method of claim 1, wherein the glucose solvent comprises a mixture of distilled water and alcohol.

28. The method of claim 1, further comprising inducing sweat prior to collecting the sweat.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein inducing sweat comprises administering pilocarpine.

30. The method of claim 29, further comprising administering a penetration enhancer.

31. The method of claim 29, further comprising driving the pilocarpine into the skin with iontophoresis.
