Abstract

The present invention is a method (10) for manufacturing a three-dimensional object. The method (10) includes receiving (14) digital information of the three-dimensional object over a communication line and building (30) the three-dimensional object based at least in part on the received digital information, where at least part of the three-dimensional object is built by rapid manufacturing, and where the three-dimensional object comprises an exterior surface. The method also includes vapor smoothing (32) at least a portion of the exterior surface of the three-dimensional object.

Claims

1. A method for manufacturing a three-dimensional object, the method comprising:

receiving digital information of the three-dimensional object over a communication line;

building the three-dimensional object based at least in part on the received digital information, wherein at least part of the three-dimensional object is built by rapid manufacturing, and wherein the three-dimensional object comprises an exterior surface; and

vapor smoothing at least a portion of the exterior surface of the three-dimensional object.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing a price quote over the communication line, wherein the price quote is based at least in part on the digital information.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the price quote is automatically generated when the digital information is received.

4. The method of claim 2, further comprising receiving an acceptance of the price quote over the communication line.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the digital information is received from a customer, and wherein the method further comprises providing the three-dimensional object to the customer.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the providing the three-dimensional object to the customer comprises shipping the three-dimensional object to the customer.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the digital information is selected from the group consisting of a digital representation of the three-dimensional object, build material information, surface smoothness information of the three-dimensional object, and combinations thereof.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the digital information comprises surface smoothness information of the three-dimensional object.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the rapid manufacturing is selected from a group consisting of fused deposition modeling, ink jetting, selective laser sintering, stereolithography, and combinations thereof.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the three-dimensional object is substantially built by rapid manufacturing.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the vapor smoothing incorporates a vapor selected from the group consisting of methylene chloride, n-Propyl bromide, perchloroethylene, trichloroethylene, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, water, alcohols, and combinations thereof.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein substantially all of the exterior surface of the three-dimensional object is vapor smoothed.

13. A method of conducting business with a customer for manufacturing a three-dimensional object, the method comprising:

receiving digital information of the three-dimensional object from the customer over a communication line;

providing a price quote to the customer over the communication line, wherein the price quote is based at least in part on the received digital information;

building the three-dimensional object based at least in part on the received digital information, wherein at least part of the three-dimensional object is built by rapid manufacturing, and wherein the three-dimensional object comprises an exterior surface and

vapor smoothing at least a portion of the exterior surface of the three-dimensional object; and

providing the smoothed three-dimensional object to the customer.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the price quote is automatically provided to the customer when the digital information is received.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the providing the smoothed three-dimensional object to the customer comprises shipping the smoothed three-dimensional object to the customer.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the digital information is selected from the group consisting of a digital representation of the three-dimensional object, build material information, surface smoothness information of the three-dimensional object, and combinations thereof.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein the rapid manufacturing is selected from a group consisting of fused deposition modeling, ink jetting, selective laser sintering, stereolithography, and combinations thereof.

18. The method of claim 13, wherein the vapor smoothing incorporates a vapor selected from the group consisting of methylene chloride, n-Propyl bromide, perchloroethylene, trichloroethylene, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, water, alcohols, and combinations thereof.

19. A method of manufacturing a three-dimensional object, the method comprising:

receiving digital information over a communication line, wherein the digital information comprises;

a digital representation of the three-dimensional object; and

surface smoothness information of the three-dimensional object;

building the three-dimensional object based at least in part on the digital representation, wherein at least part of the three-dimensional object is built by rapid manufacturing, and wherein the three-dimensional object comprises an exterior surface; and

vapor smoothing the exterior surface of the three-dimensional object based at least in part on the surface smoothness information.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising providing a price quote over the communication line, wherein the price quote is based at least in part on the digital information.

21. The method of claim 20, further comprising receiving an acceptance of the price quote over the communication line.

22. The method of claim 19, wherein the digital information is received from a customer, and wherein the method further comprises providing the three-dimensional object to the customer.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the providing the three-dimensional object to the customer comprises shipping the three-dimensional object to the customer.

24. The method of claim 19, wherein the rapid manufacturing is selected from a group consisting of fused deposition modeling, ink jetting, selective laser sintering, stereolithography, and combinations thereof.

25. The method of claim 19, wherein the vapor smoothing incorporates a vapor selected from the group consisting of methylene chloride, n-Propyl bromide, perchloroethylene, trichloroethylene, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, water, alcohols, and combinations thereof.

26. The method of claim 19, wherein substantially all of the exterior surface of the three-dimensional object is vapor smoothed.
