Abstract

Various embodiments are directed to a sheath for covering one or more components of an extra-articular implantable mechanical energy absorbing system. The sheath is generally an elongated structure having an inner space extending the length thereof. In use, the sheath can exclude the energy absorbing system from surrounding tissue and facilitate creating a capsule for its operation. Materials and dimensions are selected to achieve these purposes. The ends of the sheath include various attachment mechanisms for securing the sheath to one or more components of an extra-articular implantable mechanical energy absorbing system.

Claims

1. A method involving a sheath for an extra-articular implantable mechanical energy absorbing system, comprising:

implanting the extra-articular implantable mechanical energy absorbing system enclosed by a sheath within an interventional site; and

configuring the sheath to protect tissue within the interventional site from articulating movement of the extra-articular implantable mechanical energy absorbing system and to exclude moving portions of the extra-articular implantable mechanical energy absorbing system from tissue within the interventional site.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the sheath forms a capsule about the extra-articular implantable mechanical energy absorbing system providing a space for accessing the system should adjustments or removal be necessary.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein less than an entirety of the particular implantable mechanical energy absorbing system is enclosed by the sheath.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the sheath conforms to accommodate movement of the extra-articular implantable mechanical energy absorbing system.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the sheath is sized to accommodate movement of the extra-articular implantable mechanical energy absorbing system with comforming or changing shape.

6. A sheath for an extra-articular implantable mechanical energy absorbing system, the sheath comprising:

an elongated body having an inner diameter and an outer diameter, the elongated body having a first end and a second end;

a first attachment structure, the first attachment structure attaching the first end to a first component of the extra-articular implantable mechanical energy absorbing system; and

a second attachment structure, the second attachment structure attaching the second end to a second component of the extra-articular implantable mechanical energy absorbing system

8. The sheath of claim 6, wherein the body is formed from ePTFE.

9. The sheath of claim 6, further comprising an internal support member fixed to the elongate body, wherein the internal support member has a generally helical shape spanning the length of the elongated body.

10. The sheath of claim 6, further comprising a cushioning layer coupled to the elongated body.

11. The sheath of claim 6, wherein the elongated body has a variable wall thickness.

12. The sheath of claim 6, further comprising a second sheath positioned over the elongated body, wherein the second sheath is coupled to the first component at a first end and the second component at a second end of the second sheath.

13. The sheath of claim 6, wherein the first and second components are base components that are fixable to a bone.

14. The sheath of claim 6, wherein the first and second components are mounts coupled to first and second components, respectively.

15. The sheath of claim 6, wherein the first and second attachment structure includes a molded end piece integral with the elongated body.

16. The sheath of claim 6, wherein the first and second component are a ball and socket respectively.

17. The sheath of claim 6, wherein the first and second components are an arbor and piston.

18. The sheath of claim 6, wherein the sheath forms a unit configured near but which is not attached to the extra-articular implantable mechanical energy absorbing systems.

19. The sheath of claim 6, wherein the first and second attachment structure further comprises:

a ring embedded in the first and second ends of the sheath, wherein the embedded ring is sized to fit over the ends of the first and second components; and

an expandable ring positioned over the first and second ends of the sheath, wherein the expandable ring is positioned adjacent to the embedded ring.

20. The sheath of claim 6, wherein the first and second attachment structure further comprises a wire loop embedded within the first and second ends of the sheath, wherein a first end and second ends of the wire loop exit a leading edge of the sheath, and wherein the first and second ends of the wire loop are hook-shaped.

21. The sheath of claim 6, wherein the first and second attachment structure further comprises a wire loop embedded within the first and second ends of the sheath, wherein a leading edge of the sheath includes a plurality of regions that expose the wire loop.

22. The sheath of claim 6, wherein the first and second attachment structure further comprises a clip fixed to the first and second ends of the sheath, wherein the clip is shaped to engage a corresponding surface on the first and second components.

23. The sheath of claim 6, wherein the first and second attachment structure further comprises a plurality of hooks extending from the ends of the sheath, wherein the plurality of hooks engage an opening or surface of the first and second components.

24. The sheath of claim 6, wherein the first and second attachment structure further comprises a purse-string suture provided at the first and second ends of the sheath.

25. The sheath of claim 6, wherein the first and second attachment structure further comprises a purse-string suture provided at the first and second ends of the sheath and the means of tightening and securing the purse-string suture comprises a pre-tied, sliding, locking knot.

7. wherein the sheath protects and excludes tissue surrounding the extra-articular implantable mechanical energy absorbing system from movement of the system by forming a capsule.

26. A sheath for an extra-articular implantable system, comprising:

a body, the body including a first portion displaced from a second portion, the first and second portions being configured to be attached to the extra-articular implantable system;

wherein the body is configured to provide a space to accommodate articulation of components forming the extra-articular implantable system.

27. The sheath of claim 26, further comprising an attachment structure formed from a sintered form of the selected material.

28. The sheath of claim 26, further comprising an attachment structure including a through hole sized to receive a fastening member.

29. The sheath of claim 26, further comprising an attachment structure integral with the sheath.

30. The sheath of claim 26, further comprising the tubular body including a first terminal end and a second terminal end, and wherein at least one of the terminal ends defines a profile which is slanted with respect to a longitudinal axis extending through the body.

31. The sheath of claim 26, wherein the body is formed from ePTFE.

32. The sheath of claim 26, wherein the body is impregnated or coated with a substance promoting tissue ingrowth or is a material promoting ingrowth.

33. The sheath of claim 26, wherein the body is impregnated or coated with a substance inhibiting tissue ingrowth or is a material inhibiting ingrowth.

34. The sheath of claim 26, wherein there is a space of greater than 1 mm between the sheath and the extra-articular implantable mechanical energy absorbing system.

35. The sheath of claim 26, wherein the body is formed from one or more of PTFE, PEEK, silicone, and a thermo-plastic polymer.

36. The sheath of claim 26, wherein the body is formed from a plurality of different materials.
