Abstract

A method includes inserting a bone fixation device into a patient'"'"'s body. The bone fixation device includes a first member and a second member movably coupled to the first member. A passageway is defined within a bone tissue after the bone fixation device is inserted and while the bone fixation device is disposed within the patient'"'"'s body. At least a portion of the first member of the bone fixation device is disposed within the bone tissue along the passageway. The second member of the bone fixation device is moved relative to the first member of the bone fixation device.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

inserting a bone fixation device into a patient'"'"'s body, the bone fixation device including a first member and a second member movably coupled to the first member;

defining a passageway within a bone tissue, after the inserting and while the bone fixation device is disposed within the patient'"'"'s body;

disposing at least a portion of the first member of the bone fixation device within the bone tissue along the passageway; and

moving the second member of the bone fixation device relative to the first member of the bone fixation device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the inserting is performed using an insertion tool; and

at least one of the defining, the disposing or the moving is performed using the insertion tool.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

coupling the bone fixation device to a distal end portion of an insertion tool, before the inserting and while the distal end portion of the insertion tool is outside of the patient'"'"'s body, such that distal movement of the bone fixation device along its longitudinal axis relative to the distal end portion of the insertion tool is limited.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the defining includes advancing a guide wire into the bone tissue, the method further comprising:

removing the guide wire from the passageway before the disposing.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the inserting is performed percutaneously through an incision; and

at least one of the defining, the disposing or the moving is performed percutaneously through the incision.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the inserting includes inserting a distal end portion of an insertion tool into the patient'"'"'s body, the bone fixation device being coupled to the distal end portion of the insertion tool during the inserting;

the defining includes advancing a first shaft of the insertion tool into the bone tissue;

the disposing includes rotating a second shaft of the insertion tool such that at least the first member of the bone fixation device is threadedly disposed within the passageway, the second shaft different from the first shaft; and

the moving includes rotating a third shaft of the insertion tool relative to the second shaft of the insertion tool such that at least the second member of the bone fixation device rotates relative to the first member of the bone fixation device, the third shaft being different from the first shaft and the second shaft.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the defining includes advancing a first shaft of an insertion tool into the bone tissue; and

the disposing includes rotating a second shaft of the insertion tool such that at least the first member of the bone fixation device rotatably advances into the passageway, the second shaft different from the first shaft, the insertion tool being disposed within the patient'"'"'s body between the defining and the disposing.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the moving includes rotating the second member of the bone fixation device relative to the first member of the bone fixation device.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the bone tissue includes a facet joint;

the first member of the bone fixation device is a bone screw; and

the second member of the bone fixation device is a nut threadedly coupled to the bone screw.

10. A method, comprising:

coupling a bone fixation device to a distal end portion of an insertion tool such that distal movement of the bone fixation device along its longitudinal axis relative to the insertion tool is limited, the bone fixation device including a first member and a second member movably coupled to the first member;

advancing at least a portion of the first member of the bone fixation device into a bone tissue within a patient'"'"'s body using the insertion tool; and

moving the second member of the bone fixation device relative to the first member of the bone fixation device after the advancing, the moving performed using the insertion tool.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the coupling includes disposing a proximal end portion of the bone fixation device within a recess defined by the distal end portion of the insertion tool such that a retention member of the insertion tool is removably disposed within a groove defined by the proximal end portion of the bone fixation device.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the coupling includes any one of magnetically coupling, adhesively coupling and mechanically coupling.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein the coupling includes coupling the bone fixation device to the distal end portion of an insertion tool such that rotation of the second member of the bone fixation device relative to the insertion tool is limited.

14. The method of claim 10, wherein the coupling includes threadedly coupling the insertion tool to the first member of the bone fixation device.

15. The method of claim 10, wherein the coupling includes threadedly coupling a shaft of the insertion tool within a recess defined by the first member of the bone fixation device.

16. The method of claim 10, wherein;

the advancing includes rotating a first shaft of the insertion tool such that at least the first member of the bone fixation device is threaded into the bone tissue; and

the moving includes rotating a second shaft of the insertion tool such that at least the second member of the bone fixation device rotates, the second shaft different from the first shaft.

17. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

defining a passageway within the bone tissue, the defining performed using the insertion tool after the coupling and before the advancing.

18. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

decoupling the bone fixation device from the distal end portion of the insertion tool after the moving.

19. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

decoupling the bone fixation device from the distal end portion of the insertion tool after the moving, the decoupling performed by rotating a shaft of the insertion tool within a recess defined by the first member of the bone fixation device.

20. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

actuating a portion of the insertion tool such that the bone fixation device is decoupled from the distal end portion of the insertion tool, the actuating performed after the moving.

21. The method of claim 10, wherein:

the bone tissue includes a facet joint;

the first member of the bone fixation device is a bone screw; and

the second member of the bone fixation device is a nut threadedly coupled to the bone screw.

22. A kit, comprising:

a bone fixation device including a bone screw and a nut threadedly coupled to the bone screw; and

an insertion tool configured to define a passageway within a bone tissue within a patient'"'"'s body and insert at least a portion of the bone fixation device into the passageway of the bone tissue, the insertion tool including

a first shaft having a distal end portion removably coupled to the nut, the first shaft configured to rotate the nut about the bone screw,

a second shaft having a portion movably disposed within the first shaft, the second shaft having a distal end portion engaged with the bone screw, the second shaft configured to rotate the bone screw, and

a third shaft having a portion movably disposed within the second shaft, the third shaft configured to define the passageway within the bone tissue.

23. The kit of claim 22, wherein a portion of the insertion tool and the bone fixation device are configured to be inserted percutaneously into the patient'"'"'s body.

24. The kit of claim 22, wherein the insertion tool is configured to define the passageway and insert the portion of the bone fixation device into the passageway without being removed from the patient'"'"'s body.

25. The kit of claim 22, wherein the insertion tool is configured to define the passageway, insert the portion of the bone fixation device into the passageway, and rotate the nut about the bone screw without being removed from the patient'"'"'s body.

26. The kit of claim 22, wherein the insertion tool further includes a sheath removably disposed about the bone fixation device and the distal end portion of the first shaft.

27. The kit of claim 22, wherein the insertion tool includes a fourth shaft movably disposed within the second shaft and about the third shaft, the fourth shaft configured to be removably coupled to the bone screw.
