Abstract

Systems and methods of performing a simplified data transfer are provided. For example, a method of simplified data transfer may involve downloading an index of files accessed or modified on a home computer onto a handheld device from an online data storage server, displaying on the handheld device a user selectable list of files based on the index of files, issuing a request for a file selected by a user from the list of files from the handheld device to the data storage server, and receiving the file selected by the user onto the handheld device from the data storage server.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

downloading an index of files accessed or modified on a second electronic device onto a first electronic device from the second electronic device or from a data storage server on a network;

displaying on the first electronic device a user selectable list of files based on the index of files;

issuing a request for a file selected by a user from the list of files from the first electronic device to the second electronic device or to the data storage server; and

receiving the file selected by the user onto the first electronic device from the second electronic device or from the data storage server.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein downloading the index of files comprises downloading pointers to files accessed or modified on the second electronic device within a predetermined amount of time.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein downloading the index of files comprises downloading pointers to one or more image files viewed on the second electronic device.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein downloading the index of files comprises downloading pointers to one or more music files viewed on the second electronic device.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein downloading the index of files comprises downloading pointers to one or more web pages viewed on a web browser on the second electronic device.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein downloading the index of files comprises downloading pointers to one or more documents viewed on the second electronic device.

7. A method comprising:

downloading an index of files accessed or modified on a second electronic device onto a first electronic device from a data storage server on a network when an application is launched on the first electronic device;

displaying on the first electronic device a user selectable list of files based on the index of files;

issuing a request for a file selected by a user from the list of files from the first electronic device to the data storage server; and

receiving the file selected by the user onto the first electronic device from the data storage server.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein downloading the index of files comprises downloading pointers to files located on the data storage server.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein downloading the pointers to files located on the data storage server comprises downloading pointers to files previously uploaded to the data storage server by the second electronic device.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein downloading the index of files comprises downloading pointers to files accessed or modified on the second electronic device within a predetermined amount of time.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the predetermined amount of time is five days.

12. The method of claim 7, wherein downloading the index of files from the data storage server on the network comprises downloading the index of files from a data storage server on the Internet.

13. The method of claim 7, wherein downloading the index of files comprises downloading pointers to one or more image files viewed on the second electronic device.

14. The method of claim 7, wherein downloading the index of files comprises downloading pointers to one or more music files viewed on the second electronic device.

15. The method of claim 7, wherein downloading the index of files comprises downloading pointers to one or more web pages viewed on a web browser on the second electronic device.

16. The method of claim 7, wherein downloading the index of files comprises downloading pointers to one or more documents viewed on the second electronic device.

17. The method of claim 7, wherein the first electronic device is a handheld computer or portable phone.

18. The method of claim 7, wherein the second electronic device is a computer.

19. The method of claim 7, wherein displaying the list of files comprises displaying a list of document files, a list of web pages, a list of image files, and a list of audio files.

20. An electronic device comprising:

a processor configured to run a data transfer application;

a memory device operably coupled to the processor and configured to store an index of files accessed or modified on a source electronic device for retrieval via the data transfer application;

an electronic display configured to display a user selectable list of the index of files;

an input/output interface configured to register a selection of a file by a user from the user selectable list;

a network interface configured to download the index of files from a data storage server when the simplified data transfer application is launched, to request the file selected by the user from the data storage server, and to receive the file selected by the user from the data storage server.

21. The device of claim 20, wherein the network interface is configured to download the index of files, wherein the index of files comprises pointers to files uploaded to the data storage server by the source electronic device.

22. The device of claim 21, wherein the network interface is configured to download the index of files, wherein the index of files comprises pointers to files uploaded to the data storage server by the source electronic device within a predetermined period of time.

23. The device of claim 22, wherein the network interface is configured to download the index of files, wherein the index of files comprises pointers to files uploaded to the data storage server by the source electronic device within the last five days.

24. The device of claim 20, wherein the network interface comprises a local area network interface, a personal area network interface, a wide area network interface, an infrared interface, or any combination thereof.

25. The device of claim 20, wherein the network interface is configured to download the index of files, wherein the index of files comprises pointers to one or more image files viewed on the source electronic device.

26. The device of claim 20, wherein the network interface is configured to download the index of files, wherein the index of files comprises pointers to one or more music files viewed on the source electronic device.

27. The device of claim 20, wherein the network interface is configured to download the index of files, wherein the index of files comprises pointers to one or more web pages viewed on a web browser on the source electronic device.

28. The device of claim 20, wherein the network interface is configured to download the index of files, wherein the index of files comprises pointers to one or more documents viewed on the source electronic device.

29. The device of claim 20, wherein the network interface is configured to download the index of files, wherein the index of files comprises pointers to one or more files viewed on the source electronic device, wherein the source electronic device is a computer.

30. The device of claim 20, wherein the electronic device is a portable phone or a handheld computer.

31. A method comprising:

providing online data storage of files modified or accessed on a source electronic device and uploaded by the source electronic device;

transferring an index of the stored files to a destination electronic device when an application is launched on the destination electronic device;

receiving a request from the destination electronic device for at least one of the stored files; and

transferring the at least one of the stored files to the destination device.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein providing the online data storage of files modified or accessed on the source electronic device comprises providing online data storage of files uploaded by the source electronic device within a predetermined period of time.

33. A method comprising:

caching all files of a predetermined type that are accessed or modified on a source device to a data storage server, wherein the data storage server is configured to provide an index of the files to a destination device and to provide the destination device with at least one of the files upon request.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein caching all files of the predetermined type that are accessed or modified comprises caching all documents that are accessed or modified.

35. The method of claim 33, wherein caching all files of the predetermined type that are accessed or modified comprises caching all web pages that are accessed or modified.

36. The method of claim 33, wherein caching all files of the predetermined type that are accessed or modified comprises caching all images that are accessed or modified.

37. The method of claim 33, wherein caching all files of the predetermined type that are accessed or modified comprises caching all media files that are accessed or modified.

38. An electronic device comprising:

a processor configured to run a backup application, wherein the backup application is configured to cache files accessed or modified on the electronic device;

a memory device operably coupled to the processor and configured to store files cached by the backup application; and

a network interface configured to upload the files cached by the backup application to a data storage server, wherein the data storage server is configured to transfer an index of the files uploaded to the data storage server to a destination device when a simplified data transfer application is launched on the destination device and to transfer a file requested by the destination device to the destination device.
