Abstract

Systems and methods of performing a simplified data transfer are provided. For example, a simplified data transfer system may include two or more devices configured to perform a simplified data transfer. The first device may be configured to save and transfer data associated with applications open on the first device. When the second device initiates communication, the first device may automatically send the open application data to the second device.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

establishing communication with a device, wherein the device includes data associated with at least one open application running on the device;

exchanging device information via the established communication, wherein the device information includes a list of the data associated with the at least one open application;

displaying the list of the data associated with the at least one open application in a user selectable format on a user interface;

receiving a selection by a user of at least part of the list of the data associated with the at least one open application;

communicating a request to the device via the established communication to transfer at least part of the data associated with the at least one open application, wherein the request is based on the selection by the user; and

receiving the requested data from the device via the established communication.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein exchanging device information comprises exchanging information regarding data-processing capabilities.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein receiving the data comprises receiving the data in a converted form based on the information regarding data-processing capabilities.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein receiving the data in the converted form comprises receiving the data as a PDF.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein receiving the data in the converted form comprises receiving the data as an image file.

6. A method comprising:

establishing communication with a device having a document open in a first application running on the device;

receiving the document via the established communication; and

displaying the document in the first application if the first application is available or in a second application if the first application is not available.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein displaying the document comprises displaying the document in Microsoft Word if Microsoft Word is available or in Office Reader if Microsoft Word is not available, wherein the document is a Microsoft Word document.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein displaying the document comprises displaying the document in Microsoft Excel if Microsoft Excel is available or in Office Reader if Microsoft Excel is not available, wherein the document is a Microsoft Excel document.

9. The method of claim 6, wherein displaying the document comprises displaying the document in Microsoft PowerPoint if Microsoft PowerPoint is available or in Office Reader if Microsoft PowerPoint is not available, wherein the document is a Microsoft PowerPoint document.

10. The method of claim 6, wherein displaying the document comprises displaying the document in Keynote if Keynote is available or in iWork Reader if Keynote is not available, wherein the document is a Keynote document.

11. The method of claim 6, wherein receiving the document comprises receiving a PDF of the document if the first application is not available.

12. The method of claim 6, wherein receiving the document comprises receiving an image file of the document if the first application is not available.

13. A method comprising:

establishing communication with a device having a web page open in a web browser;

sending a request for the web page to the device; and

receiving the web page from the device.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein receiving the web page to the device comprises receiving from the device a uniform resource locator pointing to the web page if Internet access is available or a web archive of the web page if Internet access is not available.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein sending the request for the web page comprises sending a request for the web page, wherein the web page is an online map describing a first amount of geographic territory around a point.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein receiving the web page comprises receiving from the device a uniform resource locator pointing to the online map if Internet access is available or a web archive of the online map if Internet access is not available.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein receiving the web page comprises receiving from the device another online map describing a second amount of geographic territory around the point if Internet access is not available, wherein the second amount of geographic territory is greater than the first.

18. A method comprising:

establishing communication with a device playing media associated with a media file;

communicating to the device a request to identify the media and to transfer the point at which the media is being played on the device;

receiving data associated with the media file from the device; and

playing the media at the point at which the media was being played on the device when the request was communicated to the device.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein receiving the data associated with the media file from the device comprises receiving the media file and a pointer indicating the point where the media was being played on the device when the request was communicated to the device.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein receiving the data associated with the media file from the device comprises receiving a pointer indicating the point where the media was being played on the device when the request was communicated to the device.

21. A method comprising:

providing a prompt with an option to transfer at least one file associated with at least one open application on a device;

communicating a request to the device to send the at least one file when a user selects the option;

receiving data associated with the at least one file; and

providing a prompt with an option to open the data associated with the at least one file.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein receiving the data associated with the at least one file comprises receiving the at least one file if the at least one file is smaller than a predetermined size.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein receiving the data associated with the at least one file comprises receiving the entire at least one file if the at least one file is smaller than a predetermined size.

24. The method of claim 21, wherein receiving the data associated with the at least one file comprises receiving a portion of the at least one file if the at least one file is larger than a predetermined size.

25. The method of claim 21, wherein receiving the data associated with the at least one file comprises receiving a pointer describing the at least one file if the at least one file is larger than a predetermined size.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein providing the prompt with an option to open the data associated with the at least one file comprises providing a prompt with an option to download the at least one file.

27. The method of claim 21, wherein providing the prompt with the option to open the data associated with the at least one file comprises providing a primarily text-based prompt.

28. The method of claim 21, wherein providing the prompt with the option to open the data associated with the at least one file comprises providing a primarily image-based prompt.

29. A device comprising:

a user input structure;

a display;

a network interface; and

a processor configured to establish communication with another device via the network interface, to receive via the network interface device information from the other device including a list of data associated with at least one open application running on the other device, to display the list on the display, to receive via the user input structure a selection by a user based on the list, to communicate a request to the other device via the network interface to transfer the data selected by the user, and to receive the data selected by the user from the device via the network communication interface.

30. The device of claim 29, wherein the data selected by the user is a uniform resource locator (URL) and the at least one open application running on the other device is an internet browser.

31. The device of claim 30, wherein the URL is a link to a map.

32. The device of claim 31, wherein the processor is configured to open the map in a map-specific application.

33. The device of claim 30, wherein the URL is a link to a video.

34. The device of claim 33, wherein the processor is configured to open the video in a video-specific application.

35. A method comprising:

establishing near field communication with a device;

receiving identification information from the device via the near field communication;

receiving network configuration information from the device via the near field communication;

establishing network communication with the device based on the network configuration information;

receiving a request for data transfer to the device via the network communication; and

transferring data from one or more currently open applications to the device via the network communication.

36. The method of claim 35, comprising transferring a list of the one or more currently open applications to the device.

37. The method of claim 36, wherein receiving the request for data transfer comprises receiving a request indicating which data from which applications to transfer.

38. A method comprising:

establishing network communication between a first device and a second device, wherein the first device includes data associated with at least one open application running on the first device;

providing a prompt on the second device with an option for a user to initiate a file transfer activity with the first device; and

transferring the data associated with the at least one open application from the first device to the second device via the network communication when the user selects the option to initiate the file transfer activity.

39. The method of claim 38, comprising establishing near field communication and exchanging network configuration information between the first device and the second device via the near field communication before establishing the network communication.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein establishing the network communication between the first device and the second device is based on the network configuration information exchanged via the near field communication.

41. The method of claim 38, wherein transferring the data associated with the at least one open application comprises transferring the data via the network communication.

42. The method of claim 38, comprising exchanging device information between the first device and the second device via the network communication.

43. The method of claim 42, comprising converting the data associated with the at least one open application on the first device to a form capable of being displayed on the second device based on the device information exchanged before transferring the data.

44. The method of claim 43, wherein converting the data associated with the at least one open application comprises converting the data associated with the at least one open application to a PDF.

45. The method of claim 43, wherein converting the data associated with the at least one open application comprises converting the data associated with the at least one open application to an image file.

46. A method comprising:

establishing network communication with a device, wherein the device includes data associated with at least one open application running on the device;

providing a prompt with an option for a user to initiate a file transfer activity with the device;

communicating a request to the device via the network communication to initiate the file transfer activity when the user selects the option to initiate the file transfer activity; and

receiving the data associated with the at least one open application running on the device via the network communication.

47. The method of claim 46, wherein establishing the network communication comprises establishing at least one of a peer-to-peer personal area network connection, a peer-to-peer local area network connection, or a peer-to-peer connection over the Internet.

48. A method comprising:

providing a prompt with an option to establish communication with a device and initiate a file transfer activity, wherein the device includes data associated with at least one open application;

establishing communication with the device when the user selects the option to establish communication and initiate the file transfer activity;

communicating a request to the device to initiate the file transfer activity; and

receiving data associated with at least one open application running on the device

49. The method of claim 48, wherein establishing communication with the device comprises establishing communication over at least one of a peer-to-peer personal area network connection, a peer-to-peer local area network connection, or a peer-to-peer connection over the Internet.
