1. A display, comprising:
- a spatial light modulator;
a diffuser; and
a lighting mechanism comprising a plurality of light sources configured to emit light to pass through the diffuser and onto the spatial light modulator;
wherein the light source and diffuser are together configured so as to cause a light spread function having a full width at half maximum in a range of 0.3×
d2 to 3×
d2 where d2 is a center-to-center spacing between at least two of the plurality of light sources.

Abstract
A display has a screen which incorporates a light modulator. The screen may be a front projection screen or a rear-projection screen. Elements of the light modulator may be controlled to adjust the intensity of light emanating from corresponding areas on the screen. The display may provide a high dynamic range.

13. A display comprising backlights configured to project a pattern of light onto a spatial light modulator configured to further modulate the pattern of light to produce a desired image, and, a controller configured to produce control signals configured to control the backlight and the spatial modulator according to an image signal comprising the desired image;
- wherein the control signal configured to control the spatial light modulator comprises signaling configured to reduce artifacts in the desired image that result from differences in pixel sizes between the backlight and the spatial light modulator.

17. A method, comprising the steps of energizing a backlight at least in part according to an image signal containing a desired image;
- energizing a spatial light modulator in a manner that modulates light emitted from the backlight so as to produce the desired image comprising an energization that comprises a portion of the image signal and results in a reduction of artifacts which result from pixels of the backlight being in common to a plurality of pixels of the spatial light modulator.
