Abstract

An embodiment of a satellite system for broadband communication with a plurality of remote locations is disclosed. The satellite system includes a satellite, a number of service spot beams from the satellite and a number of forward channels. Each of the number of forward channels is transported on a carrier in one of the plurality of service spot beams. The number of forward sub-channels pass on one of the number of forward channels. The size of the forward sub-channels varies over time.

Claims

1. A satellite system for broadband communication with a plurality of remote locations, the satellite system comprising:

a satellite;

a plurality of service spot beams from the satellite;

a plurality of forward channels, wherein each of the plurality of forward channels is transported on a carrier in one of the plurality of service spot beams;

a plurality of forward sub-channels passing on one of the plurality of forward channels, wherein the size of the forward sub-channels vary over time.

2. The satellite system for broadband communication with the plurality of remote locations according to claim 1, wherein the size of adjacent forward sub-channels is different.

3. The satellite system for broadband communication with the plurality of remote locations according to claim 1, wherein:

the plurality of forward sub-channels are organized into a plurality of superframes, and

the size of forward sub-channels is different between the superframes.

4. The satellite system for broadband communication with the plurality of remote locations according to claim 1, wherein the forward sub-channels are assigned to a plurality of satellite modems.

5. A method for providing broadband communication with a plurality of remote locations, the method comprising steps of:

receiving a plurality of service spot beams from a satellite, wherein;

each of a plurality of forward channels is transported on a carrier in one of the plurality of service spot beams; and

passing a plurality of forward sub-channels on one of the plurality of forward channels, wherein;

the size of the forward sub-channels vary over time, and

the plurality of forward sub-channels are organized into a plurality of superframes.

6. The method for providing broadband communication with the plurality of remote locations according to claim 5, wherein the size of adjacent forward sub-channels is different.

7. The method for providing broadband communication with the plurality of remote locations according to claim 5, wherein the size of forward sub-channels is different between the superframes.

8. The method for providing broadband communication with the plurality of remote locations according to claim 5, wherein a coding and/or datarate of adjacent forward sub-channels is different.

9. The method for providing broadband communication with the plurality of remote locations according to claim 5, wherein a coding and/or datarate of forward sub-channels is different between the superframes.
