Abstract

A system and method for selection of stimulation parameters for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) may include a processor that displays in a display device and in relation to a displayed model of a leadwire including model electrodes, a current field corresponding to a first stimulation parameter set, provides a user interface for receipt of user input representing a shift of the current field, in response to the user input, moves, in the display device, the current field with respect to the displayed model, determines a second stimulation parameter set that results in the moved current field, and outputs the second stimulation parameter set and/or sets a stimulation device with the second stimulation parameter set, where the stimulation device is configured for performing a stimulation using the leadwire in accordance with the second stimulation parameter set.

Claims

1. A method of a stimulation parameter selection machine, the method comprising:

displaying, by a processor of the machine, in a display device of the machine, and in relation to a displayed model of a leadwire including model electrodes, a current field corresponding to a first stimulation parameter set;

providing, by the machine, a user interface for receipt of user input representing a shift of the current field;

in response to the user input, moving, by the processor and in the display device, the current field with respect to the displayed model;

determining, by the processor, a second stimulation parameter set that results in the moved current field; and

at least one of (a) outputting, by the machine, the second stimulation parameter set, and (b) setting, by the processor, a stimulation device with the second stimulation parameter set, the stimulation device configured for performing a stimulation using the leadwire in accordance with the second stimulation parameter set.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

calculating, by the processor, a first volume of activation (VOA) for the first stimulation parameter set;

displaying, by the processor and in the display device, the first VOA in relation to anatomical structures of a patient;

subsequent to receipt of the user input, calculating, by the processor, a second VOA for the second stimulation parameter set; and

displaying the second VOA in place of the first VOA.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein each of the model electrodes is separately selectable for cycling through a plurality of options associable with the respective electrode, the set of options including off, active cathode, and active anode.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the user interface includes for each of active ones of the model electrodes a respective directional selection component, selectable for increasing and decreasing stimulation amplitude associated with the respective electrode.

The method of claim 1, wherein the user interface includes at least two directional selection components, selection of any of which causes the processor to at least one of shift the current field in a corresponding direction and determine a stimulation parameter set that results in the current field shifted in the corresponding direction.

The method of claim 5, wherein the leadwire includes electrodes arranged around the leadwire and the user interface includes at least one rotational directional selection component, in response to selection of which the processor shifts the current field in a corresponding rotational direction about the leadwire.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising providing a user interface for receipt of input for rotating a view of the displayed leadwire model and current field about a longitudinal central axis of the leadwire model.

The method of claim 7, wherein the display of the leadwire model and current field includes at least a first view showing the leadwire model along a length of the leadwire model and a second view showing at least one of a cross-section of the leadwire model and a view of the leadwire model orthogonal to a longitudinal axis of the leadwire model.

9. The method of claim 6, wherein the user interface includes a component, in response to selection of which the current field is transposed about an axis of the leadwire.

The method of claim 1, wherein the user interface includes at least on of (a) a first set of eight input components for shifting the current field towards any of eight points of a cubed area in which the current field resides, (b) a second set of six input components for shifting the current field towards centers of any of six planes defined by the cubed area, and (c) a third set of twelve input components for shifting the current field towards centers of any of twelve edges defined by the cubed area.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the user interface includes the first, second, and third sets of input components.

12. A method of a stimulation parameter selection machine, the method comprising:

displaying, by a processor of the machine, via a display device of the machine, and in relation to displayed anatomical structures of a patient, a first volume of activation (VOA) for a first stimulation parameter set;

in response to a user-selection of one or more points within the display, calculating, by the processor, a second stimulation parameter set corresponding to a second VOA that overlaps the selected one or more points; and

displaying, by the processor and via the display device, the second VOA in relation to the displayed anatomical structures.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the parameter sets include stimulation amplitude settings of electrodes of a leadwire used for producing the VOAs.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein at least one of the anatomical structures is selected as the one or more points.

15. A method of a stimulation parameter selection machine, the method comprising:

creating, by a processor of the machine, a three-dimensional model of at least a portion of a patient'"'"'s brain using one or more medical images of the patient'"'"'s brain; and

calculating, by the processor, one or more stimulation parameters for a stimulation that results in a selected volume of activation (VOA), wherein the stimulation parameters include at least one of a leadwire location, an electrode configuration, and an electrical stimulation parameter.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

displaying the model and the VOA via a graphical user interface (GUI), wherein the VOA is user-selected via the GUI.

17. A method of a stimulation parameter selection machine, the method comprising:

calculating, by a processor of the machine, a current field for a stimulation parameter set, wherein the calculation is dependent upon leadwire to which the parameter set is applied;

displaying, by the machine and via a display device, the current field in relation to a displayed model of the leadwire;

in response to at least one of a directional user input an amplitude selection user input, shifting, by the machine, the display of the current field with respect to the displayed leadwire model.

18. A stimulation parameter selection system, comprising:

a display device; and

a processor configured to;

display in the display device and in relation to a displayed model of a leadwire including model electrodes, a current field corresponding to a first stimulation parameter set;

provide a user interface for receipt of user input representing a shift of the current field;

in response to the user input, move, in the display device, the current field with respect to the displayed model;

determine a second stimulation parameter set that results in the moved current field; and

at least one of (a) output the second stimulation parameter set, and (b) set a stimulation device with the second stimulation parameter set, the stimulation device configured for performing a stimulation using the leadwire in accordance with the second stimulation parameter set.

19. A method of a stimulation parameter selection machine, the method comprising:

displaying, by a processor of the machine, in a display device of the machine, and in relation to displayed anatomical structures of a patient, a volume of activation (VOA) corresponding to a first stimulation parameter set;

providing, by the machine, a user interface for receipt of user input representing a shift of the VOA;

in response to the user input, moving, by the processor and in the display device, the VOA with respect to the anatomical structures;

determining, by the processor, a second stimulation parameter set that results in the moved VOA; and

at least one of (a) outputting, by the machine, the second stimulation parameter set, and (b) setting, by the processor, a stimulation device with the second stimulation parameter set, the stimulation device configured for performing a stimulation using the leadwire in accordance with the second stimulation parameter set.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising:

displaying, by the processor, in the display device, in relation to a displayed model of a leadwire including model electrodes, and prior to receipt of the user input, a current field corresponding to the first stimulation parameter set; and

in response to the user input, moving, by the processor and in the display device, the current field with respect to the displayed model to a location corresponding to the second stimulation parameter set.
