Abstract

A method of replicating a deduplicated storage system is disclosed. The method comprises requesting the state of a replica system. The method further comprises sending a container to the replica system and sending a file system log record to the replica system.

Claims

1. A system for replicating a deduplicated storage system comprising:

an originator deduplicating system, wherein the originator deduplicating system breaks a data file into a plurality of segments using a processor and stores the data file by storing each segment of the plurality of segments by storing either a segment data or a reference to a previously stored segment data that is identical to the segment data; and

a replica system, wherein the replica system stores the plurality of segments to enable reconstruction the data file and receives instructions regarding updating stored segments from the originator deduplicating system.

2. A system as in claim 1, wherein the segment data or the reference to the previously stored segment data that is identical to the segment data is transferred from the originator deduplicating system to the replica system.

3. A system as in claim 2, where a checksum is used to verify successful transfer of the segment data or the reference from the originator deduplicating system to the replica system.

4. A system as in claim 1, wherein a file reconstruction data is stored on the originator deduplicating system.

5. A system as in claim 4, wherein the file reconstruction data is transferred to the replica system.

6. A system as in claim 5, where a checksum is used to verify successful transfer of the file reconstruction data from the originator deduplicating system to the replica system.

7. A system as in claim 1, wherein the instructions regarding updating stored segments comprise updating stored segments to account for a deleted file.

8. A method for replicating a deduplicated storage system comprising:

breaking a data file into a plurality of segments;

storing the data file by storing each segment of the plurality of segments by storing either a segment data or a reference to a previously stored segment data that is identical to the segment data; and

sending instructions regarding updating stored segments from an originator deduplicating system a replica system.

9. A method as in claim 8, wherein the segment data or the reference to the previously stored segment data that is identical to the segment data is transferred from the originator deduplicating system to the replica system.

10. A method as in claim 9, where a checksum is used to verify successful transfer of the segment data or the reference from the originator deduplicating system to the replica system.

11. A method as in claim 8, further comprising storing a file reconstruction data.

12. A method as in claim 11, wherein the file reconstruction data is transferred to the replica system.

13. A method as in claim 12, where a checksum is used to verify successful transfer of the file reconstruction data from the originator deduplicating system to the replica system.

14. A method as in claim 8, wherein the instructions regarding updating stored segments comprise updating stored segments to account for a deleted file.

15. A computer program product for replicating a deduplicated storage system, the computer program product being embodied in a computer readable medium and comprising computer instructions for:

breaking a data file into a plurality of segments;

storing the data file by storing each segment of the plurality of segments by storing either a segment data or a reference to a previously stored segment data that is identical to the segment data; and

sending instructions regarding updating stored segments from an originator deduplicating system a replica system.

16. A computer program product as recited in claim 15, wherein the segment data or the reference to the previously stored segment data that is identical to the segment data is transferred from the originator deduplicating system to the replica system.

17. A computer program product as recited in claim 16, where a checksum is used to verify successful transfer of the segment data or the reference from the originator deduplicating system to the replica system.

18. A computer program product as recited in claim 15, further comprising storing a file reconstruction data.

19. A computer program product as recited in claim 18, wherein the file reconstruction data is transferred to the replica system.

20. A computer program product as recited in claim 19, where a checksum is used to verify successful transfer of the file reconstruction data from the originator deduplicating system to the replica system.

21. A computer program product as recited in claim 15, wherein the instructions regarding updating stored segments comprise updating stored segments to account for a deleted file.
