Abstract

In an embodiment, an originating communication device within a wireless communications system sends a call request to a server to initiate a communication session with a target communication device, and also sends, along with the call request, a session description request, the session description request requesting alerting data to be sent to the target communication device from the server in addition to a call announce message for announcing the communication session to the at least one target communication device, the alerting data describing a nature of the communication session. The server sends the call announce message and the alerting data to the target communication device. The target communication device receives the call announce message and the alerting data, notifies a user of the target communication device of the announced communication session and outputs the alerting data to the user of the target communication device in conjunction with the notification.

Claims

1. A method of setting up a communication session arbitrated by a given server at an originating communication device within a wireless communications system, comprising:

sending a call request to the given server to initiate a communication session with at least one target communication device; and

sending, along with the call request, a session description request, the session description request requesting alerting data to be sent to the at least one target communication device from the given server in addition to a call announce message for announcing the communication session to the at least one target communication device, the alerting data describing a nature of the communication session.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication session is a half-duplex communication session, a full-duplex communication session, a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) communication session and/or a push-to-talk (PTT) communication session.

The method of claim 1, wherein the session description request either (i) includes the alerting data to be sent to the at least one target communication device along with the call announce message, or (ii) references the alerting data accessible to the given server to request that the alerting data be sent to the at least one target communication device along with the call announce message.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the alerting data corresponds to text media, audio media and/or video media.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the alerting data is configured to facilitate a user of the at least one target communication device to accept the call announce message.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

configuring the call request message to request that the given server force the at least one target communication device to accept the call announce message.

7. A method of setting up a communication session arbitrated by a given server within a wireless communications system, comprising:

receiving a call request, from an originating communication device, to initiate a communication session with at least one target communication device;

receiving, along with the call request, a session description request, the session description request requesting alerting data to be sent to the at least one target communication device from the given server in addition to a call announce message for announcing the communication session to the at least one target communication device, the alerting data describing a nature of the communication session; and

sending the call announce message and the alerting data to the at least one target communication device.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the communication session is a half-duplex communication session, a full-duplex communication session, a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) communication session and/or a push-to-talk (PTT) communication session.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the alerting data corresponds to text media, audio media and/or video media.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein the session description request either (i) includes the alerting data to be sent to the at least one target communication device along with the call announce message, or (ii) references the alerting data accessible to the given server to request that the alerting data be sent to the at least one target communication device along with the call announce message.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein, if the session description request references the alerting data accessible to the given server, further comprising:

retrieving the alerting data from a network storage location.

12. The method of claim 7, wherein the alerting data is not included within the call announce message.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the sending step sends the alerting data after the call announce message sent.

14. The method of claim 7, wherein the sending step sends the alerting data on a first channel and the call announce message on a second channel.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the first channel corresponds to a media channel.

16. The method of claim 7, wherein the sending step sends the alerting data and the call announce message concurrently.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the alerting data is included within the call announce message.

18. The method of claim 7, wherein the alerting data is configured to facilitate a user of the at least one target communication device to accept the call announce message.

19. The method of claim 7, wherein, if the call request message is configured to request that the given server force the at least one target communication device to accept the call announce message, further comprising:

configuring the call announce message to force the at least one target communication device to accept the call announce message.

20. A method of setting up a communication session arbitrated by a given server at a target communication device within a wireless communications system, comprising:

receiving a call announce message, from the given server, that announces a communication session that was originated by an originating communication device;

receiving, along with the call announce message, alerting data associated with the announced communication session, the alerting data describing a nature of the announced communication session;

notifying a user of the target communication device of the announced communication session;

outputting the alerting data to the user of the target communication device in conjunction with the notification.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the communication session is a half-duplex communication session, a full-duplex communication session, a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) communication session and/or a push-to-talk (PTT) communication session.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein the alerting data corresponds to text media, audio media and/or video media.

23. The method of claim 20, wherein the alerting data is not included within the call announce message.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the alerting data is received after the call announce message.

25. The method of claim 20, wherein the alerting data is received on a first channel and the call announce message is received on a second channel.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the first channel corresponds to a media channel.

27. The method of claim 20, wherein the alerting data and the call announce message are received concurrently.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein the alerting data is included within the call announce message.

29. The method of claim 20, wherein the alerting data is configured to facilitate a user of the target communication device to accept the call announce message.

30. The method of claim 20, wherein, if the call announce message is configured to force the target communication device to accept the call announce message, further comprising:

automatically accepting the call announce message.

31. An originating communication device configured to initiate a communication session arbitrated by a given server within a wireless communications system, comprising:

means for sending a call request to the given server to initiate a communication session with at least one target communication device; and

means for sending, along with the call request, a session description request, the session description request requesting alerting data to be sent to the at least one target communication device from the given server in addition to a call announce message for announcing the communication session to the at least one target communication device, the alerting data describing a nature of the communication session.

32. The communication device of claim 31, wherein the session description request either (i) includes the alerting data to be sent to the at least one target communication device along with the call announce message, or (ii) references the alerting data accessible to the given server to request that the alerting data be sent to the at least one target communication device along with the call announce message.

33. The communication device of claim 31, further comprising:

means for configuring the call request message to request that the given server force the at least one target communication device to accept the call announce message.

34. A server configured to arbitrate a communication session within a wireless communications system, comprising:

means for receiving a call request, from an originating communication device, to initiate a communication session with at least one target communication device;

means for receiving, along with the call request, a session description request, the session description request requesting alerting data to be sent to the at least one target communication device from the server in addition to a call announce message for announcing the communication session to the at least one target communication device, the alerting data describing a nature of the communication session; and

means for sending the call announce message and the alerting data to the at least one target communication device.

The server of claim 34, wherein the session description request either (i) includes the alerting data to be sent to the at least one target communication device along with the call announce message, or (ii) references the alerting data accessible to the server to request that the alerting data be sent to the at least one target communication device along with the call announce message.

36. The server of claim 34, wherein, if the call request message is configured to request that the server force the at least one target communication device to accept the call announce message, further comprising:

means for configuring the call announce message to force the at least one target communication device to accept the call announce message.

37. A target communication device configured to participate in a communication session arbitrated by a given server within a wireless communications system, comprising:

means for receiving a call announce message, from the given server, that announces a communication session that was originated by an originating communication device;

means for receiving, along with the call announce message, alerting data associated with the announced communication session, the alerting data describing a nature of the announced communication session;

means for notifying a user of the target communication device of the announced communication session;

means for outputting the alerting data to the user of the target communication device in conjunction with the notification.

38. The communication device of claim 37, wherein, if the call announce message is configured to force the one target communication device to accept the call announce message, further comprising:

means for automatically accepting the call announce message.

39. An originating communication device configured to initiate a communication session arbitrated by a given server within a wireless communications system, comprising:

logic configured to send a call request to the given server to initiate a communication session with at least one target communication device; and

logic configured to send, along with the call request, a session description request, the session description request requesting alerting data to be sent to the at least one target communication device from the given server in addition to a call announce message for announcing the communication session to the at least one target communication device, the alerting data describing a nature of the communication session.

The communication device of claim 39, wherein the session description request either (i) includes the alerting data to be sent to the at least one target communication device along with the call announce message, or (ii) references the alerting data accessible to the given server to request that the alerting data be sent to the at least one target communication device along with the call announce message.

41. The communication device of claim 39, further comprising:

logic configured to configure the call request message to request that the given server force the at least one target communication device to accept the call announce message.

42. A server configured to arbitrate a communication session within a wireless communications system, comprising:

logic configured to receive a call request, from an originating communication device, to initiate a communication session with at least one target communication device;

logic configured to receive, along with the call request, a session description request, the session description request requesting alerting data to be sent to the at least one target communication device from the server in addition to a call announce message for announcing the communication session to the at least one target communication device, the alerting data describing a nature of the communication session; and

logic configured to send the call announce message and the alerting data to the at least one target communication device.

The server of claim 42, wherein the session description request either (i) includes the alerting data to be sent to the at least one target communication device along with the call announce message, or (ii) references the alerting data accessible to the server to request that the alerting data be sent to the at least one target communication device along with the call announce message.

44. The server of claim 42, wherein, if the call request message is configured to request that the server force the at least one target communication device to accept the call announce message, further comprising:

logic configured to configure the call announce message to force the at least one target communication device to accept the call announce message.

45. A target communication device configured to participate in a communication session arbitrated by a given server within a wireless communications system, comprising:

logic configured to receive a call announce message, from the given server, that announces a communication session that was originated by an originating communication device;

logic configured to receive, along with the call announce message, alerting data associated with the announced communication session, the alerting data describing a nature of the announced communication session;

logic configured to notify a user of the target communication device of the announced communication session;

logic configured to output the alerting data to the user of the target communication device in conjunction with the notification.

46. The communication device of claim 45, wherein, if the call announce message is configured to force the one target communication device to accept the call announce message, further comprising:

logic configured to automatically accept the call announce message.

A computer-readable storage medium including instructions encoded thereon, which, when executed by an originating communication device configured to initiate a communication session arbitrated by a given server within a wireless communications system, cause the originating communication device to perform operations, the instructions comprising:

program code to send a call request to the given server to initiate a communication session with at least one target communication device; and

program code to send, along with the call request, a session description request, the session description request requesting alerting data to be sent to the at least one target communication device from the given server in addition to a call announce message for announcing the communication session to the at least one target communication device, the alerting data describing a nature of the communication session.

48. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 47, wherein the session description request either (i) includes the alerting data to be sent to the at least one target communication device along with the call announce message, or (ii) references the alerting data accessible to the given server to request that the alerting data be sent to the at least one target communication device along with the call announce message.

49. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 47, further comprising:

program code to configure the call request message to request that the given server force the at least one target communication device to accept the call announce message.

50. A computer-readable storage medium including instructions encoded thereon, which, when executed by a server configured to arbitrate a communication session within a wireless communications system, cause the server to perform operations, the instructions comprising:

program code to receive a call request, from an originating communication device, to initiate a communication session with at least one target communication device;

program code to receive, along with the call request, a session description request, the session description request requesting alerting data to be sent to the at least one target communication device from the server in addition to a call announce message for announcing the communication session to the at least one target communication device, the alerting data describing a nature of the communication session; and

program code to send the call announce message and the alerting data to the at least one target communication device.

The computer-readable storage medium of claim 50, wherein the session description request either (i) includes the alerting data to be sent to the at least one target communication device along with the call announce message, or (ii) references the alerting data accessible to the server to request that the alerting data be sent to the at least one target communication device along with the call announce message.

52. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 50, wherein, if the call request message is configured to request that the server force the at least one target communication device to accept the call announce message, further comprising:

program code to configure the call announce message to force the at least one target communication device to accept the call announce message.

A computer-readable storage medium including instructions encoded thereon, which, when executed by a target communication device configured to participate in a communication session arbitrated by a given server within a wireless communications system, cause the target communication device to perform operations, the instructions comprising:

program code to receive a call announce message, from the given server, that announces a communication session that was originated by an originating communication device;

program code to receive, along with the call announce message, alerting data associated with the announced communication session, the alerting data describing a nature of the announced communication session;

program code to notify a user of the target communication device of the announced communication session;

program code to output the alerting data to the user of the target communication device in conjunction with the notification.

54. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 53, wherein, if the call announce message is configured to force the one target communication device to accept the call announce message, further comprising:

program code to automatically accept the call announce message.
