Abstract

A system and a method are disclosed for adjusting a notification mechanism within a computing device. In one embodiment, the method includes receiving a global positioning system signal corresponding to latitude and longitude positional values, calculating a current location of the computing device in response to the received global positioning system signal, determining whether the calculated current location is associated with a configuration identifying adjustment, and adjusting a notification setting on the device accordingly. In another embodiment, the system includes identifying a particular time, determining whether a notification setting to the device is needed, and if so, adjusting the notification setting for the device accordingly.

Claims

1. A system for adjusting notification mechanisms within a computing device, the system comprising:

a global positioning system configured to receive global positioning system coordinates;

a configuration file configured to include;

at least one application configured to use an audible notification setting on the computing device,

at least one global positioning system tag associated with said at least one application, each global positioning system tag including positional coordinates and a predetermined tolerance,

an analysis module configured to determine a match between the received global positioning system coordinates and a global positioning system tag, the match occurring in response to the received global positioning coordinates being within a predetermined tolerance of positional coordinates of the global positioning system tag, and

a notification selector configured to generate a notification adjustment signal in response to a determination by the analysis module of a match, the signal including a notification adjustment setting corresponding to a non-audible notification setting to override the audible notification setting; and

a system control configured to adjust the audible notification setting to the non-audible notification setting in response to receiving the signal.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the application comprises a phone application.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the audible notification comprises at least one of a ringer volume and a ring tone.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the non-audible notification comprises a ringer off.

5. The system of claim 3, wherein the non-audible notification comprises a vibrate mode on the computing device.

6. A method for automatically adjusting a notification setting within a computing device, the method comprising:

receiving a global positioning system signal corresponding to a latitude and a longitude positional value;

identifying a current location of the computing device in response to the received global positioning system signal;

determining whether the identified current location is associated with a notification adjustment event; and

adjusting a notification setting on the computing device in response to the association of the current location with the notification adjustment event.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the step of determining further comprises:

accessing a database on the computing device, the database including global positioning system tags and a corresponding notification adjustment event, each global positioning tag corresponding to a specific coordinate location comprising latitude and longitude positional values; and

determining whether the calculated current location is within a predetermined distance of a global positioning tag.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the step of adjusting further comprises one of turning off an audible mechanism of the computing device.

9. The method of claim 6, wherein the step of determining further comprises:

receiving a global positioning system tag, the global positioning tag corresponding to a specific coordinate location; and

determining whether the calculated current location is within a predetermined tolerance of a global positioning tag.

10. A computer readable storage medium storing instructions to automatically adjust a notification setting within a computing device, the instructions when executed by a processor of the computing device cause the processor to:

receive a global positioning system signal corresponding to a latitude and a longitude positional value;

identify a current location of the computing device in response to the received global positioning system signal;

determine whether the identified current location is associated with a notification adjustment event; and

adjust a notification setting on the computing device in response to the association of the current location with the notification adjustment event.

11. The computer readable storage medium of claim 10, wherein the instructions that cause the processor to determine whether the identified current location is associated with the notification adjustment event further comprises instructions that when executed by the processor cause the processor to:

access a database on the computing device, the database including global positioning system tags and a corresponding notification adjustment event, each global positioning tag corresponding to a specific coordinate location comprising latitude and longitude positional values; and

determine whether the calculated current location is within a predetermined distance of a global positioning tag.

12. The computer readable storage medium of claim 11, wherein instructions that cause the processor to adjust the notification setting further comprises instructions that when executed cause the processor to turn off an audible mechanism of the computing device.

The computer readable storage medium of claim 10, wherein the instructions that cause the processor to determine whether the identified current location is associated with the notification adjustment event further comprises instructions that when executed by the processor cause the processor to:

receive a global positioning system tag, the global positioning tag corresponding to a specific coordinate location; and

determine whether the calculated current location is within a predetermined tolerance of a global positioning tag.

14. A system for adjusting notification mechanisms within a computing device, the system comprising:

a calendar application executing within the computing device, the calendar application comprising at least one calendar entry, each calendar entry having data for a time field and data for one of a subject field and a location field;

a clock executing within the computing device;

a configuration file configured to include;

at least one application configured to use an audible notification setting on the computing device,

at least one notification trigger associated with the at least one application, each notification trigger corresponding to one of a subject tag and a location tag,

an analysis module configured to determine when a time of the clock matches data in a time field of a calendar entry whether data in one of the subject field and the location field in the calendar entry matches one of a subject tag and a location tag, and

a notification selector configured to generate a notification adjustment signal in response to the match, the signal including a notification adjustment setting corresponding to a non-audible notification setting to override the audible notification setting; and

a system control configured to adjust the audible notification setting to the non-audible notification setting in response to receiving the signal.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the application comprises a telephone application.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the audible notification comprises at least one of a ringer volume and a ring tone.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the non-audible notification comprises a ringer off.

18. The system of claim 16, wherein the non-audible notification comprises a vibrate mode on the computing device.
