Abstract

An embodiment relates generally to a method of monitoring playback of content. The method includes providing for a file of content and embedding a playback counter in the file of content, the playback counter associated with a vendor. The method also includes distributing the file of content with the playback counter without restriction and incrementing a value of the playback counter in response to a viewing of the file of content with the embedded playback counter. The method further includes forwarding the value to the vendor to determine a payment to an author of the content.

Claims

1. A method of monitoring playback of content, the method comprising:

providing for a file of content;

distributing the file of content without restriction;

monitoring a playback of the file of content; and

determining a payment to an author of the content based on a sum of playbacks.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

providing for a set of products available to be used in content; and

selecting a subset of products.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

generating at least one counter; and

associating the subset of products with the at least one counter.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising assigning a global identifier to at least one of the at least one counter, the file of content, and the subset of products.

5. The method of claim 3, further comprising determining a payment for a counter increment of the at least one playback counter associated with the subset of products based on a playback.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the distributing the file of content with the counter without restriction further comprises placing the file of content with the at least one counter on a content distribution website or on a network service.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the distributing the file of content with the counter without restriction comprises placing the file of content with the counter on a content distribution website, and the placing the file of content with the counter on a content distribution website comprises placing the file of content with the counter on a website available for download.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the distributing the file of content with the counter without restriction comprises placing the file of content with the counter on a network service, and the placing the file of content with the counter on a network service comprises placing the file of content with the counter on network service available for download.

9. A system for distributing content, the system comprising:

a vendor website or network service configured to provide products and advertisements to be placed in content for a fee; and

at least one playback counter configured to be embedded in content, wherein the vendor website or network service is configured to display a set of products and advertisements through a widget;

to receive a selection of products, advertisements, or a combination of products and advertisements; and

to associate the selection with the at least one playback counter.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the vendor website or network service is further configured to assign a global identifier to at least one of the at least one playback counter, the products and advertisements, and the content.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the vendor website or network service is further configured to determine a payment for a counter increment of the at least one playback counter associated with the selection based on a playback.

12. The system of claim 9, wherein the vendor website or network service comprises a website, and the website is further configured to make the at least one playback counter available for download.

13. The system of claim 9, wherein the vendor website or network service comprises a network service, and the network service is further configured to make the at least one playback counter available for download.

14. The system of claim 9, wherein the vendor website or network service is further configured to receive values from a set of distributed playback counters.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the vendor website or network service is configured to determine a payment based on the total value received from the set of distributed playback counters.

16. A method of monitoring playback of content for a payment, the method comprising:

providing for a multiple products and advertisements;

selecting a subset of products, advertisements or combinations of products and advertisements;

generating at least one playback counter associated with the subset; and

providing the at least one playback counter available for download.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising assigning a global identifier to at least one of the products, advertisements or combinations of products and advertisements, and the at least one playback counter.

18. The method of claim 16, further comprising determining a payment for a playback associated with the selection.

19. The method of claim 16, further comprising receiving values from a set of distributed playback counters.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising determining a payment based on the total value received from at least one of the set of distributed playback counters.
