1. A system for obtaining a signature from an article, the article having a scan area on a surface of the article from which a signature of the article may be read, the system comprising:
- a signature generator including a scan head comprising an optical source operable to direct coherent radiation onto the scan area and a detector arrangement operable to detect the coherent radiation scattered from the scan area, the signature generator operable to generate a signature from the article by;
directing coherent radiation sequentially onto a plurality of different regions in the scan area using relative motion between the scan head and the article;
for each region, collecting a group of data points from signals obtained by detecting the coherent radiation scattered from that region, the groups of data points together comprising a set of data points; and
determining a signature of the article from the set of data points;
a second optical source operable to direct illuminating radiation onto the surface of the article;
an imaging detector operable to receive the illuminating radiation returned from the surface of the article and to capture a sequence of images of the surface of the article during collection of the set of data points, the images captured at known times; and
a processor operable to calculate the instantaneous velocity of the relative motion between the scan head and the article during the collection of the set of data points from the captured images, and to provide the instantaneous velocity to the signature generator;
the signature generator being further operable to use the instantaneous velocity to linearise the positions of the groups of data points within the set of data points before determining the signature of the article.

Abstract
A system for obtaining a signature a scan area on the surface of an article comprises: a signature generator that generates the signature from scattered coherent radiation detected from a plurality of regions on the surface by using relative motion between the article and a scan head comprising a coherent radiation source and photodetectors to obtain a set of data points comprising a group of data points from each region; an imaging detector that captures a sequence of images of the surface during the relative motion; and a processor that calculates the instantaneous velocity of the relative motion; whereby the signature generator uses the instantaneous velocity to linearise the groups of data point within the set of data points before generating the signature of the article from the set of data points.
