Abstract

The present invention relates to a method of enabling a computer network transaction for a product being purchased by a buyer from a seller, comprising the steps of generating a once-only transaction identification means associated with the transaction, providing the transaction identification means to a transaction acquirer, together with a buyer identification means which identifies the buyer to the transaction acquirer, and providing the once-only identification means to the seller, whereby the seller may provide the transaction identification means to the transaction acquirer and the transaction acquirer can match the transaction identification means received from the seller with the transaction identification means they have been provided with and, if they match, can enable settlement of the transaction.

Claims

1. A method of facilitating a computer network transaction for a product being purchased by a buyer from a seller, comprising the steps of generating a once-only transaction identification means associated with the transaction, providing the transaction identification means to a transaction acquirer, together with a buyer identification means which identifies the buyer to the transaction acquirer, and providing the once-only identification means to the seller, whereby the seller may provide the transaction identification means to the transaction acquirer and the transaction acquirer can match the transaction identification means received from the seller with the transaction identification means they have been provided with and, if they match, can enable settlement of the transaction.

A method in accordance with claim 1, wherein the step of generating the transaction identification means to the transaction acquirer includes the step of generating the once-only transaction identification means in response to a buyer-computing system indicating a wish to proceed with the transaction.

A method in accordance with claim 1 or claim 2 including the further steps of the seller providing the transaction identification means to the transaction acquirer and the transaction acquirer matching the transaction identification means received from the seller with the transaction identification means they have been provided with, and enabling settlement of the transaction if they match.

4. A method in accordance with any one of the preceding claims, wherein the transaction acquirer is arranged to keep payment details of the buyer in order to enable settlement of the transaction.

5. A method in accordance with any one of the preceding claims, wherein the step of generating the once-only transaction identification means includes the step of randomly generating the once-only transaction identification means.

6. A system in accordance with claim 5, wherein the once-only transaction identification means is a token, such as a number.

7. A system for facilitating a computer network transaction for a product being purchased by a buyer from a seller, comprising a generating means for generating a once-only transaction identification means and associating it with the transaction, providing means for providing the transaction identification means to a transaction acquirer computing system together with an associated buyer identification means which identifies the buyer, and for providing the transaction identification means to a seller computing system, whereby the seller may provide the transaction identification means to the transaction acquirer computing system and the transaction acquirer computing system can match the transaction identification means received from the seller computing system with the transaction identification associated with the buyer identification means, and if they match, the transaction acquirer will settle the transaction.

A system in accordance with claim 7, the transaction acquirer computing system including means for comparing the transaction identification means received from the seller computing system with the provided transaction identification means, and means for facilitating settlement of the transaction if they match.

9. A system in accordance with claim 7 or claim 8, the transaction acquirer computing system including a database maintaining payment details of the user.

10. A system in accordance with any one of claims 7 to 9, wherein the generating means includes a means for randomly generating the transaction identification means.

11. A system in accordance with claim 10, wherein the transaction identification means is a token.

12. A system for facilitating a computer network transaction for a product being purchased by a buyer from a seller, the system including a transaction acquirer computing system which includes storage means for storing a once-only transaction identification means generated in response to a buyer computing system, the once-only transaction identification means being associated with the transaction, the storage means also being arranged to store a buyer identification means which identifies the buyer associated with the transaction, receiving means for receiving from a seller a once-only transaction identification means, comparison means for comparing the once-only transaction identification means received from the seller with the stored once-only transaction identification means, whereby if the comparison means determines a match between the transaction identification means, payment for the transaction may be facilitated.

13. A system in accordance with claim 12, further including generating means for generating the once-only transaction identification means.

14. A system in accordance with claim 13, wherein the generating means is arranged to randomly generate the once-only transaction identification means.

15. A system in accordance with claim 13 or claim 14, wherein the once-only transaction identification means is a token.

16. A system in accordance with any one of claims 12 to 15, wherein the receiving means is arranged to received the once-only transaction identification means from a seller computing system.

17. A method of facilitating a computer network transaction for a product being purchased by a buyer from a seller, the method comprising the steps of a transaction acquirer receiving from a once-only transaction identification means associated with the transaction, and associating the once-only transaction identification means with a buyer identifier identifying the buyer, receiving from a seller a once-only transaction identification means, comparing the once-only transaction identification means received from the seller with the once-only transaction identification means received associated with the buyer and, if they match, facilitating payment for the transaction.

18. A method in accordance with claim 17, further comprising the step of randomly generating the once-only transaction identification means.

19. A method in accordance with claim 18, wherein the once-only transaction identification means is a token.
