Abstract

Methods and systems for remote data collection and distribution include components and operations for receiving, at a server, data transmitted by a first client device via a communication network. The method may also include selecting, by one or more client devices associated with the communication network, a second device to receive the data. The method may further include establishing a connection between the server and the selected second device via the communication network. The method may also include automatically transmitting the received data to the second device using the connection via the communication network. The method may further include causing, by the one or more client devices, the second device to execute a predefined operation.

Claims

1. Software embodied in one or more computer-readable storage media comprising one or more instructions that when executed by one or more processors are operable to:

receive a selection of a remote video source;

establish a connection with the selected video source;

receive a video feed generated by the selected video source through the connection;

retrieve fixed location imagery corresponding to a first region around and including the geographic location of the selected video source;

display a first viewing window at a display, the first viewing window displaying the fixed location imagery; and

display a second viewing window at the display, the second viewing window displaying the video feed.

2. The software of claim 1, where the software operable to establish a connection with the selected video source comprises software operable to establish a connection with one or more central servers which, in turn, establish a connection or have an established connection with the selected video source.

3. The software of claim 1, wherein the selected video source is a mobile video source.

4. The software of claim 3, wherein during a time interval in which the first and second windows are displayed, the geographic location of the selected video source is dynamic.

5. The software of claim 4, wherein the second viewing window overlays at least a portion of the first viewing window.

6. The software of claim 5, wherein the second viewing window overlays the first viewing window over a second region smaller than the first region centered approximately where the selected video source is located.

7. The software of claim 1, further operable to alter the transparency of the second viewing window.

8. The software of claim 1, further operable to:

select a second video source;

establish a second connection with the second selected video source;

receive a second video feed generated by the second selected video source through the second connection;

retrieve second fixed location imagery corresponding to a first region around and including the geographic location of the second selected video source; and

display a third viewing window at the display, the third viewing window displaying the second video feed.

9. The software of claim 1, wherein the fixed location imagery comprises satellite imagery, aerial imagery, or other fixed or relatively non-mobile imagery corresponding to the geographic location of the second video source.

17. The software of claim 1, further operable to:

receive a selection corresponding to a second selected video source;

establish a second connection with the second selected video source;

receive a second video feed generated by the second selected video source through the second connection;

retrieve second fixed location imagery corresponding to a first region around and including the geographic location of the second selected video source; and

transmit display data for displaying a third viewing window at the second display, the third viewing window displaying the second video feed.

10. Software embodied in one or more computer-readable storage media comprising one or more instructions that when executed by one or more processors are operable to:

present via a user interface at a first display a list or other representation of available video sources;

receive a selection corresponding to a selected video source;

establish a connection with the selected video source;

receive a video feed generated by the selected video source through the connection;

retrieve fixed location imagery corresponding to a first region around and including the geographic location of the selected video source;

transmit display data for displaying a first viewing window at a second display, the first viewing window displaying the fixed location imagery; and

transmit display data for displaying a second viewing window at the second display, the second viewing window displaying the video feed.

11. The software of claim 10, wherein the second display is located at a remote location relative to the first display.

12. The software of claim 10, wherein the selected video source is a mobile video source.

13. The software of claim 12, wherein during a time interval in which the first and second windows are displayed, the geographic location of the selected video source is dynamic.

14. The software of claim 13, wherein the second viewing window overlays at least a portion of the first viewing window.

15. The software of claim 14, wherein the second viewing window overlays the first viewing window over a second region smaller than the first region centered approximately where the selected video source is located.

16. The software of claim 10, further operable to alter the transparency of the second viewing window.

18. The software of claim 10, wherein the fixed location imagery comprises satellite imagery, aerial imagery, or other fixed or relatively non-mobile imagery corresponding to the geographic location of the second video source.

19. A method comprising:

receiving, by a client device, a selection of a remote video source;

establishing, by the client device, a connection with the selected video source;

receiving, by the client device, a video feed generated by the selected video source through the connection;

retrieving, by the client device, fixed location imagery corresponding to a first region around and including the geographic location of the selected video source;

display, by the client device, a first viewing window at a display, the first viewing window displaying the fixed location imagery; and

displaying, by the client device, a second viewing window at the display, the second viewing window displaying the video feed.

20. The method of claim 19, where establishing a connection with the selected video source comprises establishing a connection with one or more central servers which, in turn, establish a connection or have an established connection with the selected video source.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein the selected video source is a mobile video source, and wherein during a time interval in which the first and second windows are displayed, the geographic location of the selected video source is dynamic.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the second viewing window overlays at least a portion of the first viewing window.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the second viewing window overlays the first viewing window over a second region smaller than the first region centered approximately where the selected video source is located.

24. A method comprising:

presenting, by one or more servers, via a user interface at a first display a list or other representation of available video sources;

receiving, by the one or more servers, a selection corresponding to a selected video source;

establishing, by the one or more servers, a connection with the selected video source;

receiving, by the one or more servers, a video feed generated by the selected video source through the connection;

retrieving, by the one or more servers, fixed location imagery corresponding to a first region around and including the geographic location of the selected video source;

transmitting, by the one or more servers, display data for displaying a first viewing window at a second display, the first viewing window displaying the fixed location imagery; and

transmitting, by the one or more servers, display data for displaying a second viewing window at the second display, the second viewing window displaying the video feed.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the selected video source is a mobile video source, wherein during a time interval in which the first and second windows are displayed, the geographic location of the selected video source is dynamic, and wherein the second viewing window overlays at least a portion of the first viewing window.
