Abstract

Methods and systems for providing data communication in medical systems are disclosed.

Claims

1. A method for powering an analyte monitoring system, the method comprising:

transcutaneously positioning an analyte sensor having a conductive trace and

coupling the trace to a data processing device having one or more contact points, and

establishing a closed electrical circuit by coupling the trace to the data processing device to activate a power supply of the data processing device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the analyte sensor is a glucose sensor.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the analyte sensor includes one or more electrodes disposed on a surface thereof.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the electrodes comprise gold.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the gold electrodes are formed by at least a laser ablation technique.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the data processing device comprises a transmitter.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more contacts comprises a working contact, a reference contact, a counter contact, a ground contact, or any combination thereof.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the analyte sensor further includes a guard terminal.

9. The method of claim 7, further including connecting the conductive trace to the ground contact of the data processing device.

10. The method of claim 7, further including connecting the conductive trace to the counter contact of the data processing device.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein activating the power supply provides power to components of the data processing device.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the data processing device is inactive prior to establishing the electrical circuit.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the data processing device is in a low power state prior to establishing the electrical circuit.

14. The method of claim 1, further including the step of decoupling the analyte sensor from the data processing device to break the electrical circuit.

15. The method of claim 1, further including entering a sleep mode by decoupling the analyte sensor from the data processing device.

16. The method of claim 15, further including transmitting a last gasp signal to a receiver.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein the receiver is capable of receiving one or more close proximity commands.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein the transmitter includes an ASIC.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the ASIC is configured to generate a close proximity key.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the ASIC includes a plurality of close proximity communication commands.
