Abstract

A system and method for deploying an occluding device that can be used to remodel an aneurysm within the vessel by, for example, neck reconstruction or balloon remodeling. The system comprises an introducer sheath and an assembly for carrying the occluding device. The assembly includes an elongated flexible member having an occluding device retaining member for receiving a first end of the occluding device, a proximally positioned retaining member for engaging a second end of the occluding device and a support surrounding a portion of the elongated flexible member over which the occluding device can be positioned. The elongated flexible member may be a integral portion formed thereof that form a coil portion.

Claims

1. A system for supporting and deploying an occluding device, the system comprising:

an assembly including a guidewire having an occluding device retaining member for receiving a first end of the occluding device, a proximally positioned retaining member for engaging a second end of the occluding device;

wherein the first end of the occluding device and the second end of the occluding device is configured to move longitudinally in relation to each other about the guidewire as the occluding device is deployed into a vessel lumen.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the guidewire includes a flexible atraumatic tip.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the guidewire is configured to move in a non-rectilinear manner when the first end of the occluding device and the second end of the occluding device move in relation to each other.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the guidewire is configured to form a curl portion in the shape of a coil.

5. The system of claim 3, wherein at least a portion of the guidewire forms a coil within the interior void of the occluding device.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein an outer surface of the occluding device is a lattice structure.

7. The system of claim 4, wherein a lattice density of the lattice structure changes when the first end of the occluding device and the second end of the occluding device move towards each other.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the assembly is able to be repositioned after the occluding device is at least partially deployed from an introducer sheath.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the first end of the occluding device does not move in a forward direction while the occluding device is being deployed.

10. A method for introducing and deploying an occluding device within a vessel, the method comprising:

introducing a guidewire assembly into a catheter;

positioning an end of the catheter proximate a weakened wall portion of a blood vessel;

advancing at least a portion of the guidewire assembly out of the catheter;

so that the guidewire moves longitudinally and radially when a first end of the occluding device moves longitudinally in relation to a second end of the occluding device, while deploying the occluding device at the weakened portion.

11. The method according to claim 10, further comprising the step of confirming the position of the occluding device prior to deploying the occluding device.

12. The method according to claim 10, further comprising repositioning the occluding device after deploying at least a portion of the occluding device.

13. The method according to claim 10, further comprising the step of compressing and packing the occluding device when at least a portion of the occluding device is deployed.

14. The method according to claim 10, further comprising the step of curling at least a portion of the guidewire in the shape of a coil within the occluding device.

15. A system for supporting and deploying an occluding device, the system comprising:

an assembly for carrying the occluding device;

the assembly including a guidewire having an occluding device retaining member for receiving a first end of the occluding device, a proximally positioned retaining member for engaging a second end of the occluding device;

wherein at least a portion of the guidewire is configured to curl when the first end of the occluding device and the second end of the occluding device translates in relation to each other as the occluding device is deployed.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the guidewire includes a flexible atraumatic tip.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the guidewire curls in the shape of a coil.

18. The system of claim 15, wherein at least a portion of the guidewire curls within the occluding device.

19. The system of claim 15, wherein an outer surface of the occluding device is a lattice structure.

20. The system of claim 15, wherein the density of the lattice structure changes when the first end of the occluding device and the second end of the occluding device move towards each other.

21. The system of claim 15, wherein the assembly is able to be repositioned after the occluding device is at least partially deployed from the introducer sheath.

22. The system of claim 15, wherein the first end of the occluding device does not move in a forward direction while the occluding device is being deployed.
