Abstract

Devices and methods for determining the concentration of an analyte in a sample of liquid are provided.

Claims

45. A sensor for use in determining a concentration of a ketone body in a sample, comprising:

(a) a sample chamber; and

(b) an incompressible element in the sample chamber.

46. The sensor of claim 45, further comprising sensing chemistry proximate the incompressible element.

47. The sensor of claim 45, wherein the sensing chemistry comprises an enzyme.

48. The sensor of claim 47, wherein the sensing chemistry further comprises a redox mediator.

49. The sensor of claim 45, wherein said incompressible element is at least one of a monofilament, a thread, a yarn, a ribbon, or a tape.

50. The sensor of claim 45, wherein the sample chamber has a volume of no more than about 1 microliter.

51. The sensor of claim 50, wherein the sample chamber has a volume of no more than about 0.5 microliter.

52. The sensor of claim 51, wherein the sample chamber has a volume of no more than about 0.1 microliter.

53. The sensor of claim 45, wherein the incompressible element provides at least one opening extending into the sample chamber.

54. The sensor of claim 53, wherein the opening is a vent.

55. The sensor of claim 54, wherein the opening is a sample inlet.

56. The sensor of claim 53, wherein the incompressible element provides a second opening extending into the sample chamber, the one opening being a vent and the second being a sample inlet.

57. A sensor for determining the concentration of a ketone body in sample, the sensor having a first side edge and an opposite side edge, comprising:

(a) a first substrate;

(b) a second substrate in covering relation to the first substrate;

(c) a sample chamber present between the first substrate and the second substrates;

(d) an electrode arrangement present between the first substrate and the second substrate and in the sample chamber;

(e) an incompressible element extending between the first side edge and the second side edge of the sensor in the sample chamber and forming an opening between the first substrate and the second substrate at one of the first side edge and the second side edge; and

(f) sensing chemistry proximate the incompressible element.

58. The sensor of claim 57, wherein the incompressible element forms the first opening at the first side edge and forms a second opening between the first substrate and the second substrate at the second side edge.

59. The sensor of claim 58, wherein the first opening is an inlet and the second opening is a vent.

60. The sensor of claim 57, wherein the sensing chemistry comprises an enzyme.

61. The sensor of claim 60, wherein the sensing chemistry further comprises a redox mediator.

62. The sensor of claim 57, wherein the sample chamber has a volume of no more than about 1 microliter.

63. The sensor of claim 62, wherein the sample chamber has a volume of no more than about 0.5 microliter.

64. The sensor of claim 63, wherein the sample chamber has a volume of no more than about 0.1 microliter.

65. The sensor of claim 57, wherein said incompressible element is at least one of a monofilament, a thread, a yarn, a ribbon, or a tape.

66. The sensor of claim 57, wherein the second substrate comprises a backing having a layer of adhesive on one major surface thereof.

67. The sensor of claim 57, wherein the electrode arrangement comprises at least one working electrode and at least one counter electrode.

68. The sensor of claim 67, wherein the at least one working electrode and the at least one counter electrode are facing electrodes.

69. The sensor of claim 67, wherein the at least one working electrode and the at least one counter electrode are co-planar electrodes.
