Abstract

A system for allocating communication resources in an apparatus. For example, an apparatus that is enabled to support a plurality of wireless transports may identify a resource-intensive task to be executed using a wireless transport. Prior to the execution of the resource-intensive task, the apparatus may determine if any wireless links already exist, and whether to alter operational parameters for one or more of the existing wireless links in order to make resources available for expediting completion of the resource-intensive task.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

identifying a resource-intensive task to be executed using a wireless transport;

determining whether any wireless links already exist and if any existing wireless link will potentially interfere with, or share resources with, the wireless transport;

determining a priority level between the resource-intensive task and the existing wireless links; and

if the priority level of the existing wireless links is lower, adjusting link parameters of one or more of the existing wireless links.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the resource-intensive task to be completed using a wireless transport originates from an application executing on an apparatus.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein determining if any existing wireless link will potentially interfere with the wireless transport comprises determining whether any existing wireless link operates within the same channel bandwidth as the wireless transport.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein determining if any existing wireless link shares resources with the wireless transport comprises determining if any existing wireless link and the wireless transport will require access to the same physical resources in the apparatus.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein determining a priority level between the resource-intensive task and the existing wireless links comprises determining if the wireless transport is, or any existing wireless link uses, a low power or low data capacity wireless transport.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting link parameters includes modifying at least one connection set-up parameter for one or more of the existing wireless links.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting link parameters includes at least one of reducing a data rate parameter, reducing a required quality of service parameter or suspending operation for one or more existing wireless links.

8. A computer program product comprising computer executable code embodied on a computer readable medium, the computer program product comprising:

computer executable code configured to identify a resource-intensive task to be executed using a wireless transport;

computer executable code configured to determine whether any wireless links already exist and if any existing wireless link will potentially interfere with, or share resources with, the wireless transport;

computer executable code configured to determine a priority level between the resource-intensive task and the existing wireless links; and

computer executable code configured to, if the priority level of the existing wireless links is lower, adjust link parameters of one or more of the existing wireless links.

9. The computer program product of claim 8, wherein the resource-intensive task to be completed using a wireless transport originates from an application executing on an apparatus.

10. The computer program product of claim 8, wherein determining if any existing wireless link will potentially interfere with the wireless transport comprises determining whether any existing wireless link operates within the same channel bandwidth as the wireless transport.

11. The computer program product of claim 8, wherein determining if any existing wireless link shares resources with the wireless transport comprises determining if any existing wireless link and the wireless transport will require access to the same physical resources in the apparatus.

12. The computer program product of claim 8, wherein determining a priority level between the resource-intensive task and the existing wireless links comprises determining if the wireless transport is, or any existing wireless link uses, a low power or low data capacity wireless transport.

13. The computer program product of claim 8, wherein adjusting link parameters includes modifying at least one connection set-up parameter for one or more of the existing wireless links.

14. The computer program product of claim 8, wherein adjusting link parameters includes at least one of reducing a data rate parameter, reducing a required quality of service parameter or suspending operation for one or more existing wireless links.

15. An apparatus, comprising:

at least one communication module configured to support one or more wireless transports; and

a processor, the processor being configured to;

identify a resource-intensive task to be executed using a wireless transport;

determine whether any wireless links already exist and if any existing wireless link will potentially interfere with, or share resources with, the wireless transport;

determine a priority level between the resource-intensive task and the existing wireless links; and

if the priority level of the existing wireless links is lower, adjust link parameters of one or more of the existing wireless links.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the resource-intensive task to be completed using a wireless transport originates from an application executing on an apparatus.

17. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein determining if any existing wireless link will potentially interfere with the wireless transport comprises determining whether any existing wireless link operates within the same channel bandwidth as the wireless transport.

18. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein determining if any existing wireless link shares resources with the wireless transport comprises determining if any existing wireless link and the wireless transport will require access to the same physical resources in the apparatus.

19. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein determining a priority level between the resource-intensive task and the existing wireless links comprises determining if the wireless transport is, or any existing wireless link uses, a low power or low data capacity wireless transport.

20. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein adjusting link parameters includes modifying at least one connection set-up parameter for one or more of the existing wireless links.

21. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein adjusting link parameters includes at least one of reducing a data rate parameter, reducing a required quality of service parameter or suspending operation for one or more existing wireless links.

22. An apparatus, comprising:

means for identifying a resource-intensive task to be executed using a wireless transport;

means for determining whether any wireless links already exist and if any existing wireless link will potentially interfere with, or share resources with, the wireless transport;

means for determining a priority level between the resource-intensive task and the existing wireless links; and

means for, if the priority level of the existing wireless links is lower, adjusting link parameters of one or more of the existing wireless links.

23. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein adjusting link parameters includes modifying at least one connection set-up parameter for one or more of the existing wireless links.

24. A system, comprising:

a first apparatus; and

at least one other apparatus;

the first apparatus identifying a resource-intensive task for execution and if any existing wireless link to the at least one other apparatus will potentially interfere with, or share resources with, the execution of the resource-intensive task;

the first device determining a priority level between the resource-intensive task and the existing wireless links and adjusting one or more link parameters of at least one of the existing wireless links by transmitting link parameter adjustments to the at least one other apparatus.
