Abstract

Various systems, methods, and computer readable instructions are disclosed herein for dynamically allocating fixed bandwidth over a wireless link between a video game console and a wireless peripheral device. In an embodiment, the voice sample rate in a wireless microphone may be dynamically adjusted to free up bandwidth that can be repurposed for other operations. The sample rate adjustment can range from maximum where the bandwidth is filled with voice data to a lesser sample rate. In the case where the sample rate is less than max, the freed up bandwidth can be for used for other operations.

Claims

1. A gaming system comprising a game console and at least one wireless peripheral communicatively coupled to the game console, further comprising:

circuitry configured to receive an indication of a game context,

circuitry configured to allocate bandwidth over a communication link between the game console and said at least one wireless peripheral as a function of said game context;

circuitry configured to transmit at least one command by the game console to the at least one wireless peripheral indicating said bandwidth; and

circuitry configured to receive said at least one command and prepare data to transmit to said console in accordance with said at least one command.

2. The system of claim 1, further comprising circuitry configured to receive from the wireless peripheral an indication of a user interaction with said wireless peripheral, wherein said at least one command is determined as a function of said indication of user interaction and said game context.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein said indication of a user interaction is at least one of a position and a movement of said at least one wireless peripheral.

4. The system of claim 1, further comprising circuitry configured to calculate data resolution as a function of said game context.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein said at least one command further comprises indication of additional data to be transmitted to said console.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein said data is sampled voice data.

7. The system of claim 5, wherein said additional data is accelerometer data.

8. A method of allocating fixed bandwidth over a wireless link in a gaming system comprising a video game console and at least one wireless peripheral, said wireless peripheral including a plurality of data sources, comprising:

allocating said fixed bandwidth to said plurality of data sources for transmitting data over said wireless link;

determining a video game context associated with a video game application; and

reallocating said fixed bandwidth to said plurality of data sources in accordance with said video game context.

9. The method according to claim 8, further comprising providing an application programming interface (API) configured to receive said video game context.

10. The method according to claim 8, wherein said video game context is determined using a scene descriptor.

11. The method according to claim 9, wherein said video game context is determined using a data parameter received using said API.

12. The method according to claim 8, further comprising determining a data resolution as a function of said video game context.

13. The method according to claim 8, further comprising determining a data frequency as a function of said video game context.

14. The method according to claim 8 wherein said video game context is received from a wireless peripheral over said wireless link.

15. The method according to claim 14, wherein said video game context is based on a user interaction with said wireless peripheral.

16. A method of allocating substantially fixed bandwidth in a wireless link in a gaming system, said link configured to transmit data associated with at least two information sources, the method comprising:

allocating a first subset of said substantially fixed bandwidth for transmitting data from a first information source;

allocating bandwidth not allocated to the first information source for transmitting data from a second information source;

receiving indication of a video game context in a video game application; and

reallocating the relative bandwidth of said first and second information sources as a function of said video game context.

17. The method according to claim 16, further comprising providing an application programming interface (API) configured to receive said data video game context from a video game application, wherein said video game context is a game scene.

18. The method according to claim 16, further comprising transmitting at least one command to at least one wireless peripheral indicating the video game context.

19. The method according to claim 18 further comprising determining a voice sampling rate.

20. The method according to claim 18, wherein said at least command further indicates additional data to be transmitted in accordance with said relative bandwidth.
