Abstract

Methods, gaskets, and couplings for connecting two pipes are disclosed. One embodiment of the method includes the steps of placing the assembled coupling over one end of a pipe, aligning the second pipe with the first pipe, sliding the coupling off the end of the first pipe so that a portion of the coupling is around each pipe, and securing the coupling.

Claims

1. A coupling for joining two pipes, comprising:

an upper housing;

a lower housing;

at least one fastening device coupling the upper housing to the lower housing; and

a gasket positioned within the upper and lower housings, wherein the gasket is comprised of two primary seals, one on each outer edge of the gasket, and at least two secondary seals on a rib protruding from an inner surface of the gasket and between the two primary seals the primary seals adapted to slide over a pipe end so that at least a portion of the pipe is extending beyond each edge of the gasket.

2. The coupling of claim 1, wherein the at least one fastening device is selected from the group consisting of bolts, clips, snap-couplings, rivets, and ties.

3. The coupling of claim 1, wherein the inner diameter of the gasket is larger than the outer diameter of the pipes.

4. The coupling of claim 1, wherein an outer diameter of the gasket is concave.

5. The coupling of claim 1, wherein each primary seal includes a gripping extension.

6. The coupling of claim 1, wherein the gripping extension is adapted to grab the end of the pipe as the gasket slides over the end of the pipe.

7. The coupling of claim 1, wherein each primary seal has stepped ribs on the inner surface of the gasket.

8. The coupling of claim 1, wherein a portion of each of the upper housing and the lower housing is chamfered.

9. The coupling of claim 8, wherein the chamfered sections are on the inner surface of each of the upper housing and the lower housing adjacent to where the upper housing and the lower housing meet.

10. The coupling of claim 1, further comprising one or more spacers to separate the upper housing from the lower housing.

11. The coupling of claim 10, wherein the one or more spacers are removable.

12. The coupling of claim 10, wherein the one or more spacers are permanent and compressible.

13. The coupling of claim 12, wherein the one or more spacers are springs.

14. The coupling of claim 1, wherein the primary seals have rounded interior ends.

15. The coupling of claim 1, wherein the primary seals have interior ends that angle toward the outer surface of the gasket.

16. The coupling of claim 1, wherein the corners of the outer surface of the gasket are concave.

17. The coupling of claim 1, wherein there are three secondary seals.

18. The coupling of claim 1, further comprising at least one slot in the outer surface of the gasket.

19. The coupling of claim 18, wherein there is one continuous slot around the circumference of the gasket.

20. The coupling of claim 18, wherein there are a plurality of slots around the circumference of the gasket.

21. The coupling of claim 1, further comprising at least one retaining device.

22. The coupling of claim 21, wherein each retaining device is a single wire surrounding the upper housing and the lower housing.

23. The coupling device of claim 1, wherein the gasket is lubricated.

24. The coupling device of claim 1, wherein the lower housing and the at least one fastening device a single unit coupled to the upper housing.

25. A gasket, comprising:

two primary seals, one on each outer edge of the gasket; and

at least two secondary seals on a rib protruding from an inner surface of the gasket and between the two primary seals,

the primary seals adapted to slide over a pipe end so that at least a portion of the pipe is extending beyond each edge of the gasket.

26. The gasket of claim 25, wherein the inner diameter of the gasket is larger than the outer diameter of the pipe.

27. The gasket of claim 25, wherein an outer diameter of the gasket is concave.

28. The gasket of claim 25, wherein each primary seal includes a gripping extension.

29. The gasket of claim 25, wherein the gripping extension is adapted to grab the end of a pipe as the gasket slides over the end of the pipe.

30. The gasket of claim 25, wherein each primary seal has stepped ribs on the inner seals of the gasket.

31. The gasket of claim 25, wherein the primary seals have rounded interior ends.

32. The gasket of claim 25, wherein the primary seals have interior ends that angle toward the outer surface of the gasket.

33. The gasket of claim 25, wherein the corners of the outer seals of the gasket are concave.

34. The gasket of claim 25, wherein there are three secondary seals.

35. The gasket of claim 25, further comprising at least one slot in the outer seals of the gasket.

36. The gasket of claim 35, wherein there is one continuous slot around the circumference of the gasket.

37. The gasket of claim 35, wherein there are a plurality of slots around the circumference of the gasket.

38. A method of coupling two pipes, comprising:

placing an assembled coupling over one end of a first pipe, wherein the coupling comprises;

an upper housing;

a lower housing;

at least one fastening device coupling the upper housing to the lower housing; and

a gasket positioned within the upper and lower housings, wherein the gasket is comprised of two primary seals, one on each outer edge of the gasket, and at least two secondary seals on a rib protruding from an inner surface of the gasket and between the two primary seals, the primary seals adapted to slide over the end of the first pipe so that at least a portion of the pipe is extending beyond each edge of the gasket,

aligning a second pipe with the first pipe;

sliding the coupling so that at least a portion of the coupling is around each pipe; and

securing the coupling.

39. The method of claim 38, wherein the step of placing an assembled coupling over the end of the first pipe is completed without disassembling the coupling.

40. The method of claim 38, wherein the step of securing the coupling is completed by tightening the fastening devices.

41. The method of claim 38, further comprising the step of aligning the coupling with a groove in each pipe.

42. The method of claim 38, wherein the at least one fastening device is selected from the group consisting of bolts, clips, snap-couplings, rivets, and ties.

43. The method of claim 38, wherein the inner diameter of the gasket is larger than the outer diameter of the two pipes.

44. The method of claim 38, wherein an outer diameter of the gasket is concave.

45. The method of claim 38, wherein each primary seal includes a gripping extension.

46. The method of claim 38, wherein the gripping extension is adapted to grab the end of the first pipe as the gasket slides over the end of the first pipe.

47. The method of claim 38, wherein each primary seal has stepped ribs on the inner surface of the gasket.

48. The method of claim 38, wherein a portion of each of the upper housing and the lower housing is chamfered.

49. The method of claim 48, wherein the chamfered sections are on the inner surface of each of the upper housing and the lower housing adjacent to where the upper housing and the lower housing meet.

50. The method of claim 38, further comprising at least one spacer to separate the upper housing from the lower housing.

51. The method of claim 50, wherein the at least one spacer are removable.

52. The method of claim 50, wherein the at least one spacer are permanent and compressible.

53. The method of claim 52, wherein the at least one spacer are springs.

54. The method of claim 38, wherein the primary seals have rounded interior ends.

55. The method of claim 38, wherein the primary seals have interior ends that angle toward the outer surface of the gasket.

56. The method of claim 38, wherein the corners of the outer surface of the gasket are concave.

57. The method of claim 38, wherein there are three secondary seals.

58. The method of claim 38, further comprising at least one slot in the outer surface of the gasket.

59. The method of claim 58, wherein there is one continuous slot around the circumference of the gasket.

60. The method of claim 58, wherein there are a plurality of slots around the circumference of the gasket.

61. The method of claim 38, further comprising at least one retaining device.

62. The method of claim 61, wherein each retaining device is a single wire surrounding the upper housing and the lower housing.

63. The method of claim 38, wherein the gasket is lubricated.

64. The method of claim 38, wherein the lower housing and the at least one fastening device is one element coupled to the upper housing.

65. A method of coupling two pipes, comprising:

placing an assembled coupling over one end of a first pipe;

aligning a second pipe with the first pipe;

sliding the coupling so that at least a portion of the coupling is around each pipe; and

securing the coupling.

66. The method of claim 65, wherein the step of placing an assembled coupling over one end of a first pipe is completed without disassembling the coupling.

67. The method of claim 65, wherein the step of securing the coupling is completed by tightening the fastening devices.

68. The method of claim 65, further comprising the step of aligning the coupling with a groove in each pipe.
