Abstract

The invention provides an enforcement mechanism for limiting the propagation of content to a predefined proximity in a heterogeneous network. The protection mechanism determines the distance associated with wireless links of the heterogeneous networks and verifies that the distance is within the predefined proximity limits. The distance may be measured by evaluating the signal strength of received signals. The protection mechanism further uses round trip time determinations to enforce the proximity limits on wired or unknown segments of the heterogeneous network. Specifically, the round trip time associated with a wired or unknown segment may be determined using the round trip time associated with the wireless segments and the total round trip time of the network as a whole. The round trip time of the wired or unknown segment is then compared to a round trip time limit associated with the proximity requirement for distributing content.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving, from a sink, round trip time information of a content propagation network established between a content source and the sink; and

determining whether a first round trip time of at least a portion of the network between the content source and the sink exceeds a proximity threshold, wherein the determination is based on the received round trip time information.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the round trip time information corresponds to a first segment of the network, and the method further includes:

determining the first round trip time associated with a second segment of the network, wherein the determination is based on a difference between a total round trip time and the round trip time information.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the first segment comprises a link between the sink and a first intermediate network device situated between the content source and the sink.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the second segment comprises a link between a second intermediate network device and the content source.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the content source performs the receiving of the round trip time information and wherein the receiving is responsive to a request by the content source for the round trip time information.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the round trip time information is determined by the sink.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising authorizing propagation of a content item over the network to the sink in response to a determination that the first round trip time does not exceed the proximity threshold.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising preventing propagation of a content item over the network to the sink in response to determining that the first round trip time exceeds the proximity threshold.

9. An apparatus comprising:

a processor; and

memory operatively coupled to the processor and storing computer readable instructions that, when executed, cause the apparatus to;

receive round trip time information from a sink of a content propagation network established between a content source and the sink; and

determine whether a first round trip time of at least a portion of the network between the content source and the sink exceeds a proximity threshold, wherein the determination is based on the received round trip time information.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the apparatus includes the content source and wherein the receiving is responsive to a request by the content source for the round trip time information.

11. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the computer readable instructions, when executed, further cause the apparatus to authorize propagation of a content item over the network to the sink in response to a determination that the first round trip time does not exceed the proximity threshold.

12. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the round trip time information corresponds to a first segment of the network, and wherein the computer readable instructions, when executed, further cause the apparatus to:

determine the first round trip time associated with a second segment of the network, wherein the determination is based on a difference between a total round trip time and the round trip time information.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the first segment comprises a link between the sink and a first intermediate network device situated between the content source and the sink.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the second segment comprises a link between a second intermediate network device and the content source.

15. One or more computer readable media storing computer readable instructions that, when executed, cause an apparatus to:

receive, from a sink, round trip time information of a content propagation network established between a content source and the sink; and

determine whether a first round trip time of at least a portion of the network between the content source and the sink exceeds a proximity threshold, wherein the determination is based on the received round trip time information.

16. The one or more computer readable media of claim 15, wherein the content source performs the receiving and wherein the receiving is responsive to a request by the content source for the round trip time information.

17. The one or more computer readable media of claim 15, wherein the computer readable instructions, when executed, further cause the apparatus to authorize propagation of a content item over the network to the sink in response to a determination that the first round trip time does not exceed the proximity threshold.

18. The one or more computer readable media of claim 15, wherein the round trip time information corresponds to a first segment of the network, and wherein the computer readable instructions, when executed, further cause the apparatus to:

determine the first round trip time associated with a second segment of the network, wherein the determination is based on a difference between a total round trip time and the round trip time information.

19. The one or more computer readable media of claim 18, wherein the first segment comprises a link between the sink and a first intermediate network device situated between the content source and the sink.

20. The one or more computer readable media of claim 19, wherein the second segment comprises a link between a second intermediate network device and the content source.
