Abstract

An air pulse generator for providing high frequency chest wall oscillation therapy to a patient is provided. The air pulse generator has a housing and first and second diaphragms supported in the housing. The air pulse generator further has a crankshaft assembly coupled to the first and second diaphragms to reciprocally move the diaphragms back and forth to produce oscillating pressure pulses. The crank shaft assembly includes a motor with an output shaft that rotates about a first axis, a flywheel mounted on the shaft to rotate therewith, a first member coupled to the first diaphragm and pinned to the flywheel by a first stub shaft that is offset from the first axis, a second member coupled to the second diaphragm, and a cam interposed between the first member and the second member. The first member is pinned to the cam by the first stub shaft and the second member is pinned to the cam by a second stub shaft.

Claims

1. An air pulse generator for providing a high frequency chest wall oscillation therapy to a patient, the air pulse generator comprising:

a housing;

a first diaphragm and a second diaphragm supported in the housing; and

a crankshaft assembly coupled to the first and second diaphragms to reciprocally move the diaphragms back and forth to produce oscillating pressure pulses, the crank shaft assembly having a motor with an output shaft that rotates about a first axis, a flywheel mounted on the shaft to rotate therewith about the first axis, a first member coupled to the first diaphragm and pinned to the flywheel by a first stub shaft that is offset from the first axis, a second member coupled to the second diaphragm, a cam interposed between the first member and the second member, the first member being pinned to the cam by the first stub shaft, the second member being pinned to the cam by a second stub shaft.

2. The air pulse generator of claim 1, wherein the cam comprises a circular disk.

3. The air pulse generator of claim 1, wherein the flywheel has a first hole that receives a first portion of the first stub shaft.

4. The air pulse generator of claim 3, wherein the cam has a second hole that receives a second portion of the first stub shaft.

5. The air pulse generator of claim 4, wherein a middle portion of the first stub shaft is situated between the first and second portions of the first stub shaft and the first member has an opening in which the middle portion of the first stub shaft is received.

6. The air pulse generator of claim 1, wherein the first and second stub shafts are oriented in parallel relation with the first axis.

7. The air pulse generator of claim 6, wherein the first and second stub shafts orbit around the first axis when the output shaft of the motor rotates.

8. The air pulse generator of claim 1, further comprising a first plate coupling the first member to the first diaphragm and a second plate coupling the second member to the second diaphragm.

9. The air pulse generator of claim 8, wherein the first and second plates wobble as the first and second diaphragms are reciprocally moved back and forth by the crankshaft assembly.

10. The air pulse generator of claim 1, further comprising a blower operable to pressurize a space between the first and second diaphragms.

11. The air pulse generator of claim 10, wherein the crankshaft assembly is situated in the space that is pressurized by the blower.

12. The air pulse generator of claim 1, further comprising a shell located inside the housing and surrounding the crank shaft assemble.

13. The air pulse generator of claim 12, wherein the first and second diaphragms each have outer peripheries that are coupled to the shell.

14. The air pulse generator of claim 12, wherein the housing and shell each have at least one opening through which air pulses are forced by the reciprocal movement of the first and second diaphragms.

15. The air pulse generator of claim 14, further comprising a hose in communication with the at least one opening of the housing and shell and an inflatable garment coupled to the hose and configured to be worn by the patient.

16. The air pulse generator of claim 12, wherein the motor is mounted to the shell.

17. The air pulse generator of claim 12, wherein the shell has curvilinear walls.

18. The air pulse generator of claim 1, wherein the first and second diaphragms have an annular U shape.

19. The air pulse generator of claim 18, wherein the first and second diaphragms comprise at least one of natural rubber, silicon rubber and nitrite rubber.

20. The air pulse generator of claim 1, further comprising first and second bearings coupling the first and second stub shafts to the first and second members, respectively.
