Abstract

A gasket for use with a surgical stapling apparatus is disclosed. The gasket comprises a diisocyanate end-capped poly(ether ester). The diisocyanate is selected from the following: aromatic, aliphatic and acyclic isocyanates. The poly(ether ester) can further comprise at least one polyol and at least one poly acid. The gasket is desirably bioabsorbable.

Claims

1. A gasket for use with a surgical stapling apparatus, the gasket comprising a diisocyanate end-capped poly(ether ester).

2. The gasket according to claim 1, wherein the diisocyanate is selected from the group consisting of aromatic, aliphatic and acyclic isocyanates.

3. The gasket according to claim 1, wherein the diisocyanate is selected from the group consisting of 2,4-toluene diisocyanate, 2,6-toluene diisocyanate, 2,2′

-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, 2,4′

-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, 4,4′

-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, diphenyldimethylmethane diisocyanate, dibenzyl diisocyanate, naphthylene diisocyanate, phenylene diisocyanate, xylylene diisocyanate, 4,4′

-oxybis(phenylisocyanate), tetramethylxylylene diisocyanate, tetramethylene diisocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate, dimethyl diisocyanate, lysine diisocyanate, 2-methylpentane-1,5-diisocyanate, 3-methylpentane-1,5-diisocyanate or 2,2,4-trimethylhexamethylene diisocyanate, isophorone diisocyanate, cyclohexane diisocyanate, hydrogenated xylylene diisocyanate, hydrogenated diphenylmethane diisocyanate, hydrogenated trimethylxylylene diisocyanate, 2,4,6-trimethyl 1,3-phenylene diisocyanate and combinations thereof.

4. The gasket according to claim 1, wherein the poly(ether ester) further comprises at least one polyol and at least one polyacid.

5. The gasket according to claim 4, wherein the at least one polyol is selected from the group consisting of polyalkylene oxides, polyvinyl alcohols, polysaccharides, and combinations thereof.

6. The gasket according to claim 4, wherein the at least one polyacid is an aliphatic polyacid.

7. The gasket according to claim 6, wherein the aliphatic polyacid is selected from the group consisting of sebacic acid, azelaic acid, suberic acid, pimelic acid, adipic acid, glutaric acid, succinic acid, malonic acid, oxalic acid and combinations thereof.

8. The gasket according to claim 1, wherein the gasket is bioabsorbable.

9. The gasket according to claim 1, wherein the gasket is absorbed in the body of from about 1 day to about 21 days.

10. The gasket according to claim 1, wherein the gasket is tear-resistant.

11. The gasket according to claim 1, wherein the gasket is elastic.

12. The gasket according to claim 1, wherein the gasket is compliant.

13. The gasket according to claim 1, wherein the gasket is swellable.

14. The gasket according to claim 1, wherein the gasket is a curable material.

15. The gasket according to claim 14, wherein the gasket is UV curable.

16. The gasket according to claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the gasket is porous.

17. The gasket according to claim 1, wherein the gasket further comprises a wound treatment material.

19. The gasket according to claim 6, wherein the gasket comprises a material selected from the group consisting of diisocyanate end-capped poly(ether esters), polyesters, polyamides, polyurethanes, polypeptides, proteins, nucleic acids, polysaccharides and combinations thereof.

18. A gasket for use with a surgical stapling apparatus, the gasket comprising a pre-cured adhesive or sealant.

20. A gasket for use with a surgical stapling apparatus, the gasket comprising:

a body portion having an upper surface and a lower surface, the body portion defining a central longitudinal axis extending between the upper surface and the lower surface, body portion comprising a diisocyanate end-capped poly(ether ester); and

a plurality of pores extending through the body portion, wherein each of the pores extends from the upper surface to the lower surface such that each pore defines an axis that is substantially parallel to the central longitudinal axis;

the body portion having an outer region disposed outwardly of the plurality of pores, wherein the outer region is substantially non-porous.

21. The gasket of claim 20, wherein the diisocyanate is selected from the group consisting of:

lysine diisocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate, and phenylene diisocyanate.

22. The gasket of claim 20, wherein the body portion is dimensioned so that the plurality of pores is positioned at a staple line of the surgical stapling apparatus and the outer region is positioned outwardly of the staples fired by the surgical stapling apparatus.

23. The gasket of claim 20, wherein the body portion has an outer terminal edge, the body portion being dimensioned to that the outer terminal edge is positioned outwardly of an outer perimeter of an anvil assembly of the surgical stapling apparatus.

24. The gasket of claim 20, wherein the plurality of pores is formed by cutting the body portion.

25. The gasket of claim 20, wherein the plurality of pores is formed by stamping.

26. The gasket of claim 20, wherein the body portion includes an outer terminal edge, and an inner terminal edge defining an aperture therein, the aperture being dimensioned and arranged to receive a shaft of a surgical stapling apparatus.

27. The gasket of claim 20, wherein the body portion is substantially circular in shape.

28. The gasket of claim 20, wherein the body portion includes polyethylene glycol.

29. The gasket of claim 20, wherein the body portion is elastic.

30. The gasket of claim 20, wherein the body portion is swellable.
