1. A multi-pole rotor for an electric machine comprising:
- a rotor hub;
a plurality of primary permanent magnet segments around a perimeter of the rotor hub, an outer face of each primary magnet segment is substantially arcuate and defining a section of a substantially cylindrical surface of the rotor when mounted to the rotor hub, each primary permanent magnet segment is radially-magnetized to have a magnetic field with a magnetic direction vector normal to its outer face; and
a plurality of interpole permanent magnet segments around a perimeter of the rotor hub, an outer face of each interpole magnet segment is substantially arcuate and defining a section of a substantially cylindrical surface of the rotor when mounted to the rotor hub, each interpole permanent magnet segment having a magnetic field with a magnetic direction vector that is not normal to its outer face.

Abstract
A multi-pole rotor for an electric machine including a rotor hub, a plurality of primary permanent magnet segments, each primary magnet segment having a rounded outer face and forming a section of a cylindrical outer surface of the rotor when mounted to the rotor hub. A plurality of interpole permanent magnet segments are also included, each interpole magnet segment having a rounded outer face and forming a section of a cylindrical outer surface of the rotor when mounted to the rotor hub. The primary magnet segments and interpole magnet segments defining two or more poles.
