1. A system for periodically monitoring at least one parameter of blood comprising:
- a fluid channel system connectable to an access device configured to access blood in a patient;
at least one pump configured to draw blood from a patient and transport blood through the fluid channel system;
a plurality of test substrates contained in a housing;
a dispenser system configured to dispense a portion of a blood sample from the fluid channel system to at least one of the plurality of test substrates;
a first sensor configured to analyze the blood sample on at least one of the plurality of test substrates and produce a first sensor signal indicative of a first blood parameter;
a second sensor positioned near the fluid channel system and configured to provide a second sensor signal corresponding to an optical property of a fluid in the fluid channel system, and indicative of a second blood parameter;
wherein information corresponding to the first sensor signal and information corresponding to the second sensor signal are used to provide an improved measurement of a patient fluid parameter; and
a controller configured to control the system to automatically periodically draw a blood sample from a patient into the fluid channel system, to dispense a sample from the patient line to at least one of the plurality of test substrates, to sense an optical property with the second sensor, and to determine a measurement of a patient fluid parameter.

Abstract
The present invention is directed towards apparatuses and methods for the automated measurement of blood analytes and blood parameters for bedside monitoring of patient blood chemistry. Particularly, the current invention discloses a programmable system that can automatically draw blood samples at a suitable programmable time frequency (or at predetermined timing), can automatically analyze the drawn blood samples and immediately measure and display blood parameters such as glucose levels, hematocrit levels, hemoglobin blood oxygen saturation, blood gases, lactate or any other blood parameter.
