Abstract

An implantable medical device includes an optical hemodynamic sensor comprising at least one optical emitter and at least one detector. In some examples, the at least one optical emitter may be optically coupled to at least one light transmission member that extends from a housing of the medical device. In addition, in some examples, the at least one detector may be optically coupled to at least one light transmission member that extends from the housing of the medical device. In other examples, an optical emitter and/or detector of a hemodynamic sensor may be carried by an elongated member that extends from a housing of the IMD. The elongated member may electrically couple the optical emitter and/or detector to a controller or other components within the IMD housing.

Claims

1. An implantable medical system comprising:

an implantable housing;

an extension member extending from the housing;

an optical emitter that emits light; and

a detector that generates a signal indicative of an intensity of light emitted by the optical emitter and transmitted to the detector, the signal indicating a hemodynamic characteristic of a patient,

wherein at least one of the optical emitter or the detector are carried by the extension member.

2. The implantable medical system of claim 1, wherein the extension member comprises an electrical conductor electrically coupled to the at least one of the emitter or the detector.

3. The implantable medical system of claim 2, wherein the extension member comprises a flexible circuit.

4. The implantable medical system of claim 2, further comprising a controller that controls an operation of the optical emitter and the detector, wherein the electrical conductor electrically couples the at least one of the optical emitter or the detector to the controller.

5. The implantable medical system of claim 1, wherein the extension member is movable relative to the housing.

6. The implantable medical system of claim 1, wherein the extension member is substantially rigid.

7. The implantable medical system of claim 1, wherein the optical emitter comprises at least one of a light emitting diode, a laser diode or a vertical cavity surface emitting laser.

8. The implantable medical system of claim 1, wherein the extension member has a smaller cross-sectional size than the housing.

9. The implantable medical system of claim 1, wherein the optical emitter is electrically coupled to the extension member and carried by the extension member.

10. The implantable medical system of claim 1, wherein the detector is electrically coupled to the extension member and carried by the extension member.

11. The implantable medical system of claim 1, wherein the extension member comprises a first extension member, the system further comprising a second extension member, wherein the optical emitter is carried by the first extension member and the detector is carried by the second extension member.

12. The implantable medical system of claim 11, wherein the first and second extension members are substantially parallel.

13. The implantable medical system of claim 1, further comprising a processor that receives the signal generated by the detector and determines a hemodynamic characteristic of a patient based on the signal.

14. The implantable medical system of claim 13, wherein the hemodynamic characteristic comprises at least one of a blood oxygen saturation level, blood flow, a hematocrit level or tissue perfusion.

15. An implantable medical system comprising:

an implantable housing;

an optical emitter that emits light;

a detector that generates a signal indicative of an intensity of light emitted by the optical emitter and transmitted to the detector;

a flexible circuit electrically coupled to at least one of the optical emitter or the detector, wherein the flexible circuit extends away from the housing; and

a processor disposed within the implantable housing, wherein the processor receives the signal generated by the detector and determines a hemodynamic characteristic of a patient based on the signal, and

wherein the flexible circuit electrically couples the at least one of the optical emitter or the detector to the processor.

16. The implantable medical system of claim 15, wherein the at least one of the optical emitter or the detector are carried at a distal portion of the flexible circuit and are located outside of the implantable housing.

17. The implantable medical system of claim 15, wherein the flexible circuit has a smaller cross-sectional size than the housing.

18. The implantable medical system of claim 15, wherein the flexible circuit comprises a first flexible circuit, the system further comprising a second flexible circuit that extends away from the housing and is electrically coupled to the processor, wherein the optical emitter is electrically coupled to the first flexible circuit and the detector is electrically coupled to the second flexible circuit.

19. A method comprising:

emitting light from an implantable optical emitter; and

receiving the light at an implantable detector that generates a signal indicative of an intensity of light emitted by the optical emitter and transmitted to the detector, wherein at least one of the optical emitter or the detector are carried by an extension member that extends from a housing of an implantable medical device, the at least one of the optical emitter or detector being located outside of the housing; and

receiving the signal at a processor disposed within the housing of the implantable medical device, wherein the processor determines a hemodynamic characteristic of a patient based on the signal.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the optical emitter is carried by the extension member and is electrically coupled to the extension member, wherein emitting light comprises providing power to the optical emitter via the extension member.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein the detector is carried by the extension member and is electrically coupled to the extension member, wherein receiving the signal at the processor comprises receiving the signal at the processor via the extension member.
