Abstract

A reloadable device for deploying fasteners. The device has a handle and at least one actuator. The handle is connected to an elongated hollow housing having distal and proximal ends. The device includes a first cartridge containing at least one fastener releasably connectable to the handle. The fastener has at least two anchors connected together by a non-resilient flexible suture which does not resist deformation under compressible loads. The first cartridge is removable from the handle. The device includes a second cartridge having at least one fastener releasably connectable to the handle after removal of the first cartridge. The second cartridge being insertable into the device from a proximal end thereof.

Claims

1. A reloadable device for deploying fasteners comprising:

a. a handle and at least one actuator;

b. said handle connected to an elongated hollow housing having distal and proximal ends;

c. a first cartridge containing at least one fastener releasably and being connectable to said handle;

d. said fastener comprising at least two anchors connected together by a non-resilient flexible suture which does not resist deformation under compressible loads, said first cartridge being removable from said handle; and

e. a second cartridge containing at least one fastener and being releasably connectable to said handle after removal of said first cartridge, said second cartridge being insertable into said device from a proximal end thereof.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein said cartridges further includes a needle within said hollow housing for deploying said fastener

3. The device of claim 2 wherein said needle is off set from a center of said hollow housing.

4. The device of claim 2 wherein said needle has a slot extending from a distal end at least partially back towards a proximal end of said needle.

5. The device of claim 2 wherein said needle has a cross section perpendicular to a longitudinal axis which is non-circular.

6. The device of claim 2 wherein at least one of said needle and said hollow housing is movable relative to the other, said needle having a retracted position, where a distal end of said needle is entirely within said housing, and an exposed position wherein said distal end of said needle is distal to said distal end of said hollow housing.

7. The device of claim 6 further including a lock for maintaining said needle in said retracted position.

8. The device of claim 1 wherein said cartridge contains multiple fasteners.

9. The device of claim 6 wherein said sutures of said fasteners extend to said proximal end of said hollow housing, said cartridge further including a means at said proximal end of said device for separately manipulating each suture individually.

10. The device of claim 8 further including a means at said proximal end of said cartridge for distinguishing one suture from another.

11. The device of claim 1 further including a suture severing means at said distal end of said cartridge.

13. The device of claim 1 wherein said cartridges further includes a needle within said hollow housing for deploying said fastener

14. The device of claim 2 wherein said needle is off set from a center of said hollow housing.

15. The device of claim 2 wherein said needle has a slot extending from a distal end at least partially back towards a proximal end of said needle.

16. The device of claim 2 wherein said needle has a cross section perpendicular to a longitudinal axis which is non-circular.

17. The device of claim 2 wherein at least one of said needle and said hollow housing is movable relative to the other, said needle having a retracted position, where a distal end of said needle is entirely within said housing, and an exposed position wherein said distal end of said needle is distal to said distal end of said hollow housing.

18. The device of claim 6 further including a lock for maintaining said needle in said retracted position.

19. The device of claim 1 wherein said cartridge contains multiple fasteners.

20. The device of claim 6 wherein said sutures of said fasteners extend to said proximal end of said hollow housing, said cartridge further including a means at said proximal end of said device for separately manipulating each suture individually.

21. The device of claim 8 further including a means at said proximal end of said cartridge for distinguishing one suture from another.

12. A reloadable device for deploying fasteners comprising:

a. a handle and at least one actuator;

b. said handle connected to an elongated hollow housing having distal and proximal ends;

c. a first cartridge containing at least one fastener and releasably connectable to said handle and a suture severing means at a distal end thereof;

d. said fastener comprising at least two anchors connected together by a non-resilient flexible suture which does not resist deformation under compressible loads, said first cartridge being removable from said handle; and

e. a second cartridge containing at least one fastener, said second cartridge is releasably connectable to said handle after removal of said first cartridge, said second cartridge being insertable into said device from a proximal end thereof.
