Abstract

The disclosure describes, in one aspect, a method of braking a machine having an electric drive configuration. The electric drive configuration includes at least one electric retarding system connected to a first set of wheels. Additionally, a first friction brake system connects to the first set of wheels to provide a braking output torque. A second friction brake system connects to a second set of wheels and provides a second braking output torque. The system calculates and applies a braking ratio between the electric and friction braking systems based upon both user controls and conditions encountered.

Claims

1. A method of braking a machine having an electric drive configuration including at least one electric retarding system associated with a first set of wheels, a first friction brake system associated with the first set of wheels to provide a first brake system output torque, a second friction brake system associated with a second set of wheels to provide a second brake system output torque, the method comprising:

calculating a desired machine retarding torque to be applied to the machine;

determining a desired ratio of machine retarding torque splits between the first set of wheels and the second set of wheels;

commanding the electric retarding system to supply a calculated output torque based on the desired machine retarding torque and the desired ratio of retarding torque splits;

applying a ratio of the first brake system output torque to the second brake system output torque to supplement the output torque supplied by the electric retarding system if the electric retarding system is not providing the desired machine retarding torque.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the second friction brake system is a front friction brake system associated with a front set of wheels and wherein the determining a desired ratio step includes detecting whether a front brake enable selection has been made by a machine operator.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising the step of setting the calculated output torque to the desired machine retarding torque if the front brake enable selection has not been made.

4. The method of claim 2 further comprising the step of setting the calculated output torque to ⅔

of the desired machine retarding torque if the front brake enable selection has been made.

5. The method of claim 2 further comprising the step of supplying brake cooling oil to the first friction brake system and the second friction brake system according to a predetermined cooling ratio.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising varying the predetermined cooling ratio when the front brake enable selection has been made.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of calculating the desired machine retarding torque further comprises multiplying a requested auto retarder torque and a manual retarder torque.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the desired ratio of the machine retarding torque splits between the first set of wheels and the second set of wheels equals a ratio of the weight on the first set of wheels to the weight on the second set of wheels.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the calculated output torque never exceeds the output torque that the electric retarding system can provide.

10. The method of claim 1 further including the step of determining whether the output torque supplied by the electric retarding system approximates the calculated output torque using feedback signals from the electric retarding system.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the ratio in the determining a desired ratio step and the ratio in the applying a ratio step are the same ratio.

12. An off-road work machine comprising:

an engine connected to a generator powering an electric motor;

at least one electric retarding system associated with a rear set of wheels;

a front friction brake system associated with a front set of wheels and disposed to provide a front brake system output torque;

a rear friction brake system associated with the rear set of wheels and disposed to provide a rear brake system output torque;

the electric motor associated with a set of rear wheels and configured to provide electric retarding to the off-road work machine;

at least one control module configured to calculate a desired machine retarding torque to be applied to the off-road work machine, to determine a desired ratio of machine retarding torque splits between the front set of wheels and the rear set of wheels, to command the at least one electric retarding system to supply a calculated output torque based on the desired machine retarding torque and the desired ratio of retarding torque splits, and to apply a ratio of the front brake system output torque to the rear brake system output torque to supplement the output torque supplied by the at least one electric retarding system if the at least one electric retarding system is not providing the desired machine retarding torque.

13. The off-road work machine according to claim 12 wherein the friction brake system comprises a front friction brake module associated with a set of front wheels and a rear friction brake module associated with the set of rear wheels.

14. The off-road work machine according to claim 13 further comprising a front retarding brake selector.

15. The off-road work machine according to claim 14 wherein the at least one control module is configured to request ⅔

of the desired machine retarding torque from the electric motor when the front retarding brake selector is engaged and the at least one control module is further configured to request all the desired machine retarding torque from the electric motor when the front retarding brake selector is not engaged.

16. A method of braking a machine having an electric drive configuration including at least one electric retarding system associated with a first set of wheels, a first friction brake system associated with the first set of wheels to provide a first brake system output torque, a second friction brake system associated with a second set of wheels to provide a second brake system output torque, the method comprising:

calculating a desired machine retarding torque to be applied to the machine;

commanding the electric retarding system to supply the desired machine retarding torque; and

applying a ratio of the first brake system output torque to the second brake system output torque to supplement the output torque supplied by the electric retarding system if the electric retarding system is not providing the desired machine retarding torque.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the step of calculating the desired machine retarding torque further comprises multiplying a requested auto retarder torque and a manual retarder torque.

18. The method of claim 16 wherein the step of determining whether the output torque supplied by the electric retarding system approximates the desired machine retarding torque is pre-calculated.

19. The method of claim 16 wherein the step of determining whether the output torque supplied by the electric retarding system approximates the desired machine retarding torque is calculated using feedback signals from the electric retarding system.

20. The method of claim 16 further including supplying brake cooling fluid to cool the first friction brake and the second friction brake.
