Abstract

In a method for use in a base station of a mobile telecommunications system, primary system information is maintained and is periodically broadcast while secondary system information is broadcast in response to a trigger event.

Claims

1. A method of communicating system information in a base station of a mobile telecommunications system, the method comprising maintaining primary system information;

maintaining secondary system information;

periodically broadcasting the primary system information;

in response to a trigger event, broadcasting the secondary system information.

2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the trigger event comprises receipt of a request for secondary system information from user equipment (UE).

3. A method according to claim 1, wherein in response to the trigger event, broadcast of the secondary system information is scheduled for broadcast as scheduling information.

4. A method according to claim 1, wherein the primary system information includes scheduling information identifying the next broadcast of the secondary system information or includes a pointer that points to the scheduling information.

5. A method according to claim 3 wherein the scheduling information includes time and channel information.

6. A method according to claim 3, wherein, in the absence of a trigger event, broadcast of the secondary system information is not scheduled.

7. A method according to claim 1, wherein the primary system information is transmitted at regular intervals.

8. A method according to claim 1, wherein the primary system information comprises an identifier of the cell and a set of cell radio parameters.

9. A method according to claim 1, wherein the secondary system information comprises neighbor cell information.

10. A method according to claim 1, wherein the content of the secondary system information is dependent on the type of trigger.

11. A method according to claim 1, wherein a channel or code sequence is reserved for requests from user equipment for secondary system information and wherein a single trigger event is generated on receipt of overlapping requests from more than one user equipment.

18. A base station including a radio interface and a transmission scheduler arranged to perform a method according to claim 1.

20. A computer program product comprising instructions which when executed by a processing component of a mobile telecommunications system cause the system to perform a method according to claim 1.

12. A method of obtaining system information by user equipment of a mobile telecommunications system, the method comprising:

receiving primary system information broadcast by the cell;

determining, from the primary system information, scheduling information identifying broadcast of secondary system information;

receiving the secondary system information based on-the determined scheduling information.

13. A method according to claim 12 including in an idle mode waiting for scheduling of the secondary system information in the absence of scheduled or received secondary system information.

14. A method according to claim 12 further comprising, following transition to an active mode, in the absence of received secondary system information or scheduling information, requesting secondary system information.

15. A method according to claim 14 wherein requesting comprises using a reserved channel or code sequence to request secondary system information.

16. A method according to claim 12, including updating stored system information following receipt of broadcast primary or secondary system information.

17. A method according to claim 12, including camping on a cell based on the received primary system information without requesting or receiving secondary system information.

19. User equipment including a radio interface and a store for cell system information arranged to perform a method according to claim 12.
