Abstract

Disclosed herein is an implantable pulse generator feedthru configured to make generally planar electrical contact with an electrical component housed within a can of an implantable pulse generator. The feedthru may include a feedthru housing including a header side and a can side, a core within the feedthru housing, a generally planar electrically conductive interface adjacent the can side, and a feedthru wire extending through the core. The feedthru wire may include an interface end and a header end, wherein the header end extends from the header side and the interface end is at least one of generally flush with the generally planar interface and generally recessed relative to the generally planar interface.

Claims

1. An implantable pulse generator feedthru configured to make generally planar electrical contact with an electrical component housed within a can of an implantable pulse generator, the feedthru comprising:

a feedthru housing including a header side and a can side;

a core within the feedthru housing;

a generally planar electrically conductive interface adjacent the can side; and

a feedthru wire extending through the core and including an interface end and a header end, wherein the header end extends from the header side and the interface end is at least one of generally flush with the generally planar interface and generally recessed relative to the generally planar interface.

2. The feedthru of claim 1, wherein the core includes a ceramic material.

3. The feedthru of claim 1, wherein the interface end includes a generally flattened head.

4. The feedthru of claim 1, wherein the generally planar interface includes a first electrical trace forming at least a portion of the generally planar interface, and the interface end is electrically coupled to the first electrical trace.

5. The feedthru of claim 4, wherein the first electrical trace includes a recessed portion that is at least one of generally recessed relative to the rest of the first electrical trace and generally recessed relative to the rest of the generally planar interface.

6. The feedthru of claim 5, wherein the interface end resides within the recessed portion of the first electrical trace.

7. The feedthru of claim 4, wherein the first electrical trace is located near the center of the generally planar interface.

8. The feedthru of claim 4, wherein the generally planar interface includes a second electrical trace physically separate from the first electrical trace and forming at least a portion of the generally planar interface, and the feedthru housing is electrically coupled to the second electrical trace.

9. The feedthru of claim 8, wherein the first electrical trace is located near the center of the generally planar interface and the second electrical trace is radially spaced apart from the center of the generally planar interface.

10. The feedthru of claim 8, wherein at least one of the traces includes a border that is arcuate along at least a portion thereof.

11. The feedthru of claim 8, wherein the traces form concentric circles.

12. The feedthru of claim 8, further comprising a ground wire including an interface end and a housing end, wherein the housing end is electrically coupled to the feedthru housing and the ground wire interface end is at least one of generally flush with the generally planar interface and generally recessed relative to the generally planar interface.

13. The feedthru of claim 12, wherein at least one of the interface ends includes a generally flattened head.

14. The feedthru of claim 12, wherein the second electrical trace includes a recessed portion that is at least one of generally recessed relative to the rest of the second electrical trace and generally recessed relative to the rest of the generally planar interface.

15. The feedthru of claim 14, wherein each interface end resides within the recessed portion of the respective electrical trace to which it is electrically coupled.

17. The feedthru of claim 1, wherein the electrical component includes at least one of an output flex, hybrid, and printed circuit board.

18. The feedthru of claim 1, further comprising a plate including a housing side and a can side, wherein the housing side is adjacent the can side of the feedthru housing and the can side of the plate includes the generally planar interface.

19. The feedthru of claim 18, wherein the plate includes an electrically insulating body on which the generally planar interface exists.

20. The feedthru of claim 1, wherein the header end of the feedthru wire is coupled to a lead connector block.

21. The feedthru of claim 1, wherein the header end of the feedthru is coupled to a RF antenna.

22. An implantable pulse generator comprising:

a header;

a can;

a feedthru extending between the header and can and including a header side, a first generally planar electrically conductive interface opposite the header side, and a feedthru wire extending through the feedthru from the first interface to project from the header side into the header; and

an electrical component housed within the can and including a second generally planar electrically conductive interface,

wherein the first and second interfaces are in electrical contact.

The pulse generator of claim 22, wherein the first electrical interface includes a first electrically conductive trace electrically coupled with an interface end of the feedthru wire, the second electrical interface includes a second electrically conductive trace electrically coupled with a power side of the electrical component, and the first and second traces are in abutting electrical contact.

The pulse generator of claim 23, wherein the first electrical interface further includes a third electrically conductive trace electrically coupled with a ground side of the feedthru, the second electrical interface further includes a second electrically conductive trace electrically coupled to a ground side of the electrical component, and the first and second traces are in abutting electrical contact.

25. The pulse generator of claim 24, wherein the first and third electrical traces are near the centers of their respective interfaces, and the second and fourth electrical traces are radially spaced away from the centers of their respective interfaces.

26. The pulse generator of claim 24, wherein at least one of the traces includes a recessed portion that is at least one of generally recessed relative to the rest of the first electrical trace and generally recessed relative to the rest of the generally planar interface.

27. The pulse generator of claim 24, wherein at least one of the traces includes a border that is arcuate along at least a portion thereof.

28. The pulse generator of claim 24, wherein the traces of at least one of the interfaces form concentric circles.

29. The pulse generator of claim 22, wherein the electrical contact between the first and second interfaces is limited to contact between electrically conductive faces of the interfaces, wherein the faces of the respective interfaces are generally planar and generally perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the feedthru.

30. The pulse generator of claim 22, wherein the electrical component includes at least one of an output flex, hybrid, and printed circuit board.

31. The pulse generator of claim 22, further comprising an RF antenna including a first end coupled to the feedthru wire on the header side of the feedthru.

32. The pulse generator of claim 22, wherein the feedthru wire on the header side of the feedthru is coupled to a lead connector block.

33. A method of manufacturing an implantable pulse generator, the method comprising:

providing a feedthru including a generally planar electrically conductive interface;

providing an electrical component including a generally planar electrically conductive interface; and

placing the interfaces in physical contact with each other.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein the interfaces are placed in physical contact via a pick-and-place process.

35. The method of claim 33, wherein the electrical component includes at least one of a hybrid, output flex and printed circuit board.

36. The method of claim 33, wherein the feedthru interface includes a power electrical trace and a ground electrical trace spaced apart from each other, and the electrical component interface includes a power electrical trace and a ground electrical trace spaced apart from each other.

37. The method of claim 36, wherein placing the interfaces in physical contact causes the power electrical traces to abut and the ground electrical traces to abut.
