A method of operating a handheld machine tool comprising a sensory tool for a sensory detection of a reference characteristic that describes a default trajectory on a side of a work piece as a route guidance and for an arithmetic conversion of characteristic values that correspond with the reference characteristic into control signals, the method comprising:
- detecting a default trajectory for the machine tool by the characteristic values;
reading in the default trajectory; and
providing a working line for a working tool to be driven along and that corresponds with the default trajectory by control signals that correspond with the characteristic values.
