Abstract

A system and method of determining an attribute of a biological tissue sample or a drug delivery device. A sample is illuminated with substantially monochromatic light to thereby generate Raman scattered photons. The Raman scattered photons are assessed to thereby generate a spectroscopic data set wherein said spectroscopic data set comprises at least one of: a Raman spectra and a spatially accurate wavelength resolved image. Tile spectroscopic data set is evaluated to determine at least one of: an attribute of a biological tissue sample and a drug delivery device. In one embodiment, the biological tissue comprises arterial tissue. In another embodiment, the drug delivery device is a drug-eluting stent. In another embodiment, Raman chemical imaging can be used to evaluate a sample and identify at least one of: the tissue, a drug, a drug delivery device, and a matrix associated with a drug delivery device.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

illuminating a sample with substantially monochromatic light to thereby produce Raman scattered photons, wherein said sample comprises at least one of;

a biological tissue and a drug delivery device;

assessing said Raman scattered photons to thereby generate at least one spectroscopic data set representative of said sample, wherein said spectroscopic data set comprises at least one of;

a Raman spectra of the sample and a spatially accurate wavelength resolved Raman image of the sample;

evaluating said spectroscopic data set to thereby determine at least one of;

an attribute of the biological tissue and an attribute of the drug delivery device.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said attribute of the biological tissue comprises the presence of a drug in the tissue.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising determining the concentration of said drug in the tissue.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said attribute of the biological tissue comprises the biochemical composition of the tissue.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein said attribute of the biological tissue comprises a change in the tissue due to the presence of a drug in the tissue.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein said attribute of the drug delivery device comprises the size of the drug delivery device.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein said attribute of the drug delivery device comprises the degradation of a matrix associated with the drug delivery device.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein said attribute of the drug delivery device comprises the presence of a drug in said drug delivery device.

9. The method of claim 8 further comprising determining the concentration of said drug in the drug delivery device.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising assessing a visible microscopic image of said sample.

11. A method comprising:

illuminating a sample with substantially monochromatic light to thereby produce Raman scattered photons, wherein said sample comprises at least one of;

arterial tissue and a drug-eluting stent;

assessing said Raman scattered photons to thereby generate at least one spectroscopic data set representative of said sample, wherein said spectroscopic data set comprises at least one of;

a Raman spectra of the sample and a spatially accurate wavelength resolved image of the sample;

evaluating said spectroscopic data set to thereby determine at least one of;

an attribute of the arterial tissue and an attribute of the drug-eluting stent.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein said attribute of the arterial tissue comprises the presence of a drug in the arterial tissue.

13. The method of claim 12 further comprising determining the concentration of said drug in the arterial tissue.

14. The method of claim 11 wherein said attribute of the arterial tissue comprises the biochemical composition of the arterial tissue.

15. The method of claim 11 wherein said attribute of the arterial tissue comprises a change in the arterial tissue due to the presence of a drug in the arterial tissue.

16. The method of claim 11 wherein said attribute of the drug-eluting stent comprises the size of the drug-eluting stent.

17. The method of claim 11 wherein said attribute of the drug-eluting stent comprises the degradation of a coating associated with said drug-eluting stent.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein said coating comprises a polymer coating.

19. The method of claim 11 wherein said attribute of the drug-eluting stent comprises the presence of a drug in the drug-eluting stent.

20. The method of claim 19 further comprising determining the concentration of said drug in the drug-eluting stent.

21. The method of claim 11 further comprising assessing a visible microscopic image of said sample.

22. The method of claim 11 wherein said arterial tissue further comprises para-strut amorphous material.

23. The method of claim 22 further comprising analyzing said para-strut amorphous material to thereby identify at least one of:

protein present in said material, fluid present in said material, and cellular components present in said material.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein said protein present is said material comprises fibrin.

25. The method of claim 11 wherein said attribute of said arterial tissue comprises the presence of scar tissue.

26. A method comprising:

illuminating a sample with substantially monochromatic light to thereby produce Raman scattered photons, wherein said sample comprises at least one of;

a drug delivery device, a matrix associated with a drug delivery device, a drug, and a tissue;

assessing said Raman scattered photons to thereby generate at least one spectroscopic data set representative of said sample, wherein said spectroscopic data set comprises at least one of;

a Raman spectra of the sample and a spatially accurate wavelength resolved Raman image of the sample;

evaluating said spectroscopic data set to thereby identify at least one of;

a drug delivery device, a matrix associated with a drug delivery device, a drug, and a tissue.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein said drug delivery device is a drug-eluting stent.

28. The method of claim 26 wherein said matrix associated with a drug delivery device is a polymer matrix

29. The method of claim 26 wherein said tissue comprises arterial tissue.

30. The method of claim 26 further comprising obtaining a visible microscopic image of said sample.
