Abstract

The invention relates to a resuscitation device for humans. The resuscitation device is designed to provide resuscitating stimulation of the respiratory area of the human brain stem, preferably from a location distant from said respiratory area. The invention further relates to a method for providing a rescuscitating treatment to a human. Parameters are measured by a number of sensor means and processed by a processing means for providing a response by a number of stimulation means. The stimulation means are electrical, mechanical or chemical stimulation means.

29. Resuscitation device for humans comprising:

a sensor for detecting a number of parameter values in a human being;

at least one memory for storing a predetermined function and optionally a number of detected parameter values;

at least one processing unit connected with the sensor and the memory for processing the number of detected parameter values in said predetermined function;

a response device connected with the processing unit for providing a response as a function of the number of processed parameter values by the at least one processing unit;

characterized in that

the resuscitation device is implantable in the pharyngeal area of the human being,

said sensor is arranged to detect a breathing signal from said human being,

the said predetermined function is such that it allows said at least one processing unit to determine whether said human being is in a state of developing apnoea,

the response device comprises a stimulation device designed to provoke an induced aspiration reflex by a resuscitating stimulation of the respiratory area of the human brain stem by providing a stimulus to the pharyngeal area, preferably the oropharynx or nasopharynx, more preferably the nasopharynx, most preferably the nasopharyngeal area around one or both tubae auditivae.

30. Device according to claim 29, wherein said sensor is arranged as being at least one of:

a sensor to detect human cerebral activity by sensing EEG signals from the pharynx, preferably the nasopharynx,

a sensor to measure temperature or pressure,

a sensor to measure neural activity,

a microphone, and

a sensor to provide EMG data.

31. Device according to claim 29, wherein said predermined function is such that it allows said at least one processing unit to establish whether said human being is in a state of developing apnoea when it detects absence of breathing during a time period of at least 5 seconds.

32. Device according to claim 29, wherein the stimulation device is at least one of an electrical stimulation device and a mechanical stimulation device.

33. Device according to claim 32, wherein the stimulation device is said electrical stimulation device and said electrical stimulation device is provided with either mono-polar or multipolar electrodes.

34. Device according to claim 33, wherein said electrodes are arranged as being one of electrodes that can be placed in a human tissue, electrodes in the form of needles and electrodes that can be anchored in a subject'"'"'s pharynx such as screw treads or flabs.

35. Device according to claim 33, wherein said device has a conductive housing arranged as an antenna for detecting electric activity of a human body, as well as an electrode to guide an electric current to the human body in its direct proximity.

36. Device according to claim 32, wherein said stimulation device is said mechanical stimulation device arranged for mechanical stimulation of mechanoreceptors in a dorsolateral area of the nasopharynx.

37. Device according to claim 29, wherein said device is designed such as not to have any external sensor and stimulation device.

38. Resuscitation device for humans comprising:

a sensor for detecting a number of parameter values in a human being;

at least one memory for storing a predetermined function and optionally a number of detected parameter values;

at least one processing unit connected with the sensor and the memory for processing the number of detected parameter values in said predetermined function to determine whether said human being is in a state of developing apnoea;

a response device connected with the processing unit for providing a response as a function of the number of processed parameter values by the at least one processing unit when said at least one processing unit has determined that said human being is in said state of developing apnoea;

characterized in that

said resuscitation device is an apparatus comprising both said sensor, said memory, said at least one processing unit and said response device, said apparatus being arranged to be attached under a human'"'"'s nose, said sensor being arranged to sense breathing activity, and said response device comprising a stimulation device designed to provoke an induced aspiration reflex by a resuscitating stimulation of the respiratory area of the human brain stem by providing a stimulus to at least one of a nasal filter of the human being, preferably acupuncture point GV26 on said human nasal filter, and a nasopharyngeal area of the human being.

39. Device according to claim 38, wherein said sensor is arranged to sense at least one of a gas flow, gas composition, gas pressure, gas temperature, body temperature and sound.

40. Device according to claim 38, wherein the response device is at least one of an electrical response device, a device for spraying a chemical composition and a mechanical response device.

Device according to claim 40, wherein said stimulation device comprises an elastic nylon fibre and thin polyvinyl catheter, or a unit for providing gas pressure pulses if it has to provide a stimulus to said nasopharyngeal area or a unit for providing at least one of gas pressure pulses, acupuncture, acupressure, electro-acupuncture, and electro-acupressure if it has to provide a stimulus to the nasal filter.

42. Device according to claim 40, wherein said stimulation device comprises electrodes arranged to be placed on a human skin.

43. Resuscitation device for humans comprising:

a sensor for detecting a number of parameter values in a human being;

at least one memory for storing a predetermined function and optionally a number of detected parameter values;

at least one processing unit connected with the sensor and the memory for processing the number of detected parameter values in said predetermined function to establish whether said human being is in a state of developing apnoea;

a response device connected with the processing unit for providing a response as a function of the number of processed parameter values by the at least one processing unit when said at least one processing unit has determined that said human being is in said state of developing apnoea;

characterized in that

said resuscitation device is designed for wearing on or behind a human ear,

said sensor is arranged to detect a breathing signal from said human being,

the response device comprises a stimulation device designed to provoke an induced aspiration reflex by a resuscitating stimulation of the respiratory area of the human brain stem by providing a stimulus to a human ear.

44. Device according to claim 43, wherein the response device is at least one of an electrical response device and a mechanical response device.

45. Device according to claim 43, wherein said resuscitating device is arranged as one of a headset and an ear cap.

46. Resuscitation device for humans comprising:

a sensor for detecting a number of parameter values in a human being;

at least one memory for storing a predetermined function and optionally a number of detected parameter values;

at least one processing unit connected with the sensor and the memory for processing the number of detected parameter values in said predetermined function;

a response device connected with the processing unit for providing a response as a function of the number of processed parameter values by the at least one processing unit;

characterized in that

said sensor is arranged to detect at least one of human muscle activity, human breathing activity, human neural activity and human cerebral activity,

the said predetermined function is such that it allows said at least one processing unit to determine whether said human being is in a state of one of severe snoring, transient ischemic attacks (TIA), syncope, haemorhagic shock, asthmatic bronchospasm in asthmatics, laryngospasm, hiccup, tremor associated with Parkinson'"'"'s disease, epileptic seizure, absence type epilepsy, migraine, hypotension, alternating hemiplegia, Alzheimers disease, depression, anorexia nervosa, bulimia, autism, psychiatric disorders, sleep paralysis, insomnia, and comatose states,

the response device comprises a stimulation device designed to provoke an induced aspiration reflex by a resuscitating stimulation of the respiratory area of the human brain stem by providing a stimulus to a location distant from said respiratory area of the human brain stem upon said at least one processing unit establishing one of said states, said location being one of human upper airways, a human nasal filter and a human ear.

47. Method for providing a rescuscitating treatment of a human being, comprising:

sensing at least one of human muscle activity, human breathing activity, human neural activity and human cerebral activity,

determining whether said human being is in a state of developing apnoea by at least one processing unit based on said sensing,

provoking an induced aspiration reflex by a resuscitating stimulation of the respiratory area of the human brain stem by providing a stimulus with a response device to a location distant from said respiratory area of the human brain stem upon said at least one processing unit determining said state of developing apnoea, said location being one of human upper airways, a human nasal filter and a human ear.

48. Method according to claim 47, wherein said sensing comprises sensing at least one of heart muscle and diaphragm activity.

49. Method according to claim 47, wherein said sensing comprises sensing at least one of gas flow, gas composition, gas pressure, gas and body temperature, or sound to detect breathing activity.

50. Method according to claim 47, wherein said stimulus is provided to the pharynx.

51. Method according to claim 50, wherein said stimulus is provided to one of the oropharynx and nasopharynx.

52. Method according to claim 51, wherein said stimulus is provided to the nasopharyngeal area around at least one of the tubae auditivae.

53. Method according to claim 47, wherein resuscitating stimulation is provided with electrical stimulation means.

54. Method according to claim 47, wherein resuscitating stimulation is provided with mechanical stimulation means.

55. Method according to claim 47, wherein resuscitating stimulation is provided with chemical stimulation means.

56. Method according to claim 55, wherein the chemical stimulation means comprise a spraying means for spraying a resuscitation inducing chemical.

57. Method for providing a rescuscitating treatment of a human being, comprising:

sensing at least one of human muscle activity, human breathing activity, human neural activity and human cerebral activity,

determining whether said human being is in a state of one of severe snoring, transient ischemic attacks (TIA), syncope, haemorhagic shock, asthmatic bronchospasm in asthmatics, laryngospasm, hiccup, tremor associated with Parkinson'"'"'s disease, epileptic seizure, absence type epilepsy, migraine, hypotension, alternating hemiplegia, Alzheimers disease, depression, anorexia nervosa, bulimia, autism, psychiatric disorders, sleep paralysis, insomnia, and comatose states by at least one processing unit based on said sensing,

provoking an induced aspiration reflex by a resuscitating stimulation of the respiratory area of the human brain stem by providing a stimulus with a response device to a location distant from said respiratory area of the human brain stem upon said at least one processing unit establishing said state, said location being one of human upper airways, a human nasal filter and a human ear.
